Android :: Sense Vs Unadulterated Google
Jun 6, 2010
I recently ordered an Incredible and while I wait for it to someday come into stock and i can get my grubby hands on it.in the meanwhile, here's what im wondering:i've been reading a lot about 2.2 and im wondering if it fixes a lot of what sense already does, if that's the case, does it make more sense for me just to get the Nexus and be able to get fast updates.so, is sense worth having, or is unadulterated google via Nexus the better route to go?

Just got my Droid, but I tried the HTC Hero for a couple weeks and really enjoyed the Sense UI. Since Android is an open platform, I was just curious, is it possible for a third party developer to create a custom UI that significantly alters the entire interface and functionality of Android 2.0 on the Droid, for example?

If anyone has any ideas on beneficial updates to Google Android or Sense software to make the Incredible a better device to use post them here.
1. I'd like HTC to upgrade the Sense Keyboard. When you need to select a number or symbol, you need to hold in a key. The problem with this is that if you accidentally press a button by accident and want to "roll" your finger to the right one you are able to do this. The problem is you can only select the letter no matter how long you hold the key in the numbers and symbols will never pop up.
2. Make a separate app for Photo's and Video's or just call the app "Media"
3. Subtitle support in the default video player.

I think I understand that you need 2 accounts for gmail to get one on the HTC Mail widget. One registered to the phone, which only uses the gmail of the phone. The second allows you to associate it to the widget. My question is, I figure the google account associated to the phone is the one that has gtalk associated with it. Correct? Can you log out of that one and use the 2nd account for gtalk as well? Or are you stuck to only using the google account associated to the phone? The reason I am asking is we use Google Talk at work as our IM service, and would need to use that at times, but also want to be able to turn on my personal one as well.

l know not many have received the phone, but if you know the answer to this (by experience or just knowledge) feel free to comment!I like how gVoice can be fully integrated into 2.1 (on the N1). Does Sense change anything, or can one still achieve the same full integration with Sense involved? I would like to exclusively use my gVoice number when my phone comes in, but I don't know if it will be smooth, seamless, and fully integrated, or if it will be the way it is on my Blackberry Tour right now.

Once the sprint galaxy S3 or HTC evo LTE are upgraded to jelly bean, can you just use the google experience UI and use less resources than the custom UI? I hear Samsung is bloated and even sense is slower than straight jelly bean. Or do the factory UIs still run in the background and make the phone slower than a nexus?
I am debating on one of these now or keep my evo3d till sprint gets a newer nexus.
Will either of these 2phones with JB be so close to a Nexus that it wouldn't be tha noticeable except to a pro, or would the Nexus be notably faster, smoother, etc?
I don't want to upgrade and be locked in to the current Nexus with sprint if something better is 6 months or less away.

I don't like the sense screen that comes up when you make calls, and I have google voice installed. How do I make sure that the google voice screen, pictured below, sticks instead of having it switch to the sense call screen. Also, can I theme the google voice app? I'm not a fan of the colors.

It seems that with the cancellation of the N1 on both Verizon and Sprint, I lost my last best hope for an unadulterated Android platform. I honestly don't want Sense UI or any other proprietary UI. And at least on the Incredible (and presumably the EVO), its impossible to turn it off.

Can I somehow detect if my app is running on HTC Sense? More generally, the problem is, that I have a Button with custom drawable. It's something very similar to the account switcher in the top right of Gmail app. When pressed or focused, the button has orange highlight. But that doesn't look nice on HTC Sense - because the standard highlight color there is green.

found that someone was trying to do this with the Desire but it was never resolved. is it possible to run the HTC Sense UI with the stock Android launcher over top of it? specifically, i'm looking for the block like pattern on the bottom instead of apps/phone/add in the Sense UI. and i'd also like the 3D scrolling of the apps launcher (drawer).

Is there a way to access the copy/paste api/UI in an Android / HTC Sense based phone? I really like the way a long press works in a large canvas while using Sense. Is there a way to programmatically detect code is running on a Sense-based phone and call out to those APIs?

I have downloaded the new sense 2.1 rom that people are flashing onto the Nexus in an attempt to pull out the apk for the flash player.
I was able to find 2 files:
1. FlashPlayer.apk
2. FlashLitePlugin.apk
The first one(player) goes through the normal process, then says app not installed. The 2nd one(plugin) installs just fine but doesn't seem to do anything. Not sure if it is even possible this route or if you have to do this adb push Ive been hearing so much about?

i'm torn between two worlds the world without HTC sense where you can have a shortcut dock on the homescreen as provided by LauncherPro, and the world with HTC sense where more homescreen widgets work. So, the question is - can you get a dock like the one offered by LauncherPro and keep Sense, or, can you get more widgets to work with LauncherPro. Widgets like the agenda calendar where your facebook contacts and any other events show up in a list?

I used to have sense but rooted and went to a senseless ROM. The only thing I liked about sense was Facebook for HTC Sense. Every app I have found to sync facebook profiles only does the pictures. Is there an app that will sync birthdays to the calendar and pictures to my contacts, and allow me to choose which syncs where? I have some friends with Facebook names that I do NOT want to be as my phone contacts.

How or where should I store mp3 files that I want to use as ringtones, but don't necessarily want in my music library? I know you use the Music app to set a ringtone, but it only shows the files in the MP3 folder... I added a "Ringtones" folder, but I guess it's not reading it...

How soon will we be seeing Android 2.2 with Sense UI available for our phone?
Here is the place for people who have credible information (as credible as it usually gets around here, anyway ) to post it, whether it be info about HTC's official release, or even a ROM that can safely be applied to the phone to be up and running with 2.2 + Sense.

Is there a way to get HTC Hero system image for the emulator?
Sense UI has quite some changes to activities like Contacts. So intents to select Phone number (new Intent(Intent.ACTION_PICK, Phones.CONTENT_URI) ) work differently from default Contacts app, and things like viewing Call Log ( new Intent ("com.android.phone.action.RECENT_CALLS"); ) do not work at all. Is there a way to test my code against Hero device, beside getting physical device.
