Android :: Root Phone For Application To Work - Installing New Themes?
Feb 19, 2010
Basically, do you need to root your phone, to get apps to work? I've been reading around the net, and I've seen some things where it says that certain apps may require the phone to be rooted or what have you. Being an Android n00b, I have no idea what this means!. Also, is this the case for installing new themes? Does the phone have to be rooted for this?

I currently have my DX running rooted, deodexed Froyo. Can I install themes (say ones made for D1) now? Or are themes phone specific.

My application redirects its users to a known domain (secure.gate2shop.com) that its root certificate doesn't exist on Android devices. Normal PC browsers have no problem accessing the site, but Android browser displays to the user that the certificate is untrusted. I don't want that behavior, not even once, so I'm looking for a way to install this certificate on the device from my app.

I've rooted and flashed CyanogenMod 6.0 onto my Droid. I went slow; it took me a while and lots of careful reading on this forum. I used ROM Manager to flash and I'd like to continue using it to install themes. Is that a good idea? Is it always necessary (or recommended) to wipe all when flashing new themes?

So yesterday I rooted my device yesterday. Today I did Droid X Bootstrap Recovery, Deodex, and backed up after deodex using ROM Manager. I got the rubix .3 ROM, and installed that. From what Ive read is to install a theme you need to put the update.zip folder on the sd card. In the root fold of my sd I already have an update.zip file. What is this? Do I need to put the them in the root of the sd? Or can I make a themes folder with subfolders and put the themes there?

I have the Droid, Android's just released 2.1, and I downloaded dxtop, which in itself seems to work fine.
However, when I install dxtop themes, they seem to download and install OK from the Market screens and the pulldown status bar, but when I go to install them they are nowhere to be found.
The documentation I have found, even by dxtop itself, is nebulous about (finding and) installing the themes.

All I really want is a black notification bar. I like the stock icons, I prefer the green color scheme to the blue that a lot of roms change it to. But really anything would be better than the stock white. Any themes out there that work with the new BB? The couple I've tried cause the phone to fail to boot (stuck at Motorola screen)

When you download a theme it is XX.XMB. Does that amount get added on to the original ROM, or does it replace the information in the original ROM?The reason I ask is because I have always been curious as to if a theme in theory would slow down a ROM? I mean I know that even if it did it would be so miniscule that nobody would surely notice, but I'm curious just the same.

I'm running the leaked 2.2, rooted, deodexed, themed and all that fun stuff. When the official 2.2 comes I plan on sbf'ing back to 2.1 to get that update since I am having a couple small issues with the leak. Questions are, since deodexing worked on the leak it should work the same way on the official right? to re-root, it sounds like people have been having luck using the droid 2 method in adb, so I should be able to run that to get root back? Themes for the leaked 2.2 should also work for the official 2.2 too? Or is this the same "we dont know till it actually comes" issue?

Can you please tell me why the android Contacts application theme/style is using 'dark' theme? For example, the activity's background is Black instead of White. I have looked at their Android Manifest xml file and their layout xml file (e.g. call details.xml) file, but i don't see how they specified using a 'dark' theme? Can you please tell me how do they do that? I have looked at http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/ui/themes.html, but I don't see Contacts app is doing that.

I am new here. I want to get the Droid but im on AT&T and I wont switch anytime soon. I was thinking about getting the Milestone. Can I use all these root hacks/themes/other stuff with the Milestone? I know the software is a little different cause it doesnt come with Google Nav or the Amazon Store. Any help would be nice
Also, can i flash the Droid Nandroid or whatever to the Milestone and give it the Droid software? Then it would basically be like the Droid but a GSM version.

I have created several files in a res/values/styles.xml file.
Here's one of them:
CODE:..............
I can apply the style to a single element in the xml by setting the style element like this:
CODE:.................
So, that works, and I notice that change. But what I really want to do is use the style above to apply to my entire application. I thought I'd be able to use this line:
this.getApplicationContext().setTheme(R.style.BlueOnWhite);
Before the super.onCreate of the first activity. But it doesn't work. Should it?

Is it possible for an Android app to install a native Linux daemon with root privilege that runs when the system starts up? The purpose of this daemon would be to support and communicate with our Android front-end app.

I have an LG Optimus S that I am trying to root, however I can't get it to connect to my PC. My brother has the same device and his connects fine right away to my system, however mine does nothing but charge when connected (used same drivers, PC, chord, etc.)
I tried restoring it to factory settings and no luck. Later took it to Sprint and he just re-updated the software and it connected right away to their PC. Then as soon as I got home it didn't connect again.
Also tried with my work laptop. His connects, mine doesn't. Could there be a reason why mine didn't work as soon as I got back from the store?
I made sure that the settings from by brothers phone matched mine and verified that the software is identical.

If it is possible to have root on my current Desire ROM (T-Mobile branded 2.1 update1, Build 1.21.110.4 CL175581 release keys, bootloader 0.80) without having to wipe the phone and install another ROM?
The reason that I ask is that I have read a few reviews about Titanium Backup as that would back up all apps and settings and make my life a lot easier if I decide to debrand and install the stock 2.2 ROM as everything can be reinstalled in a 1 click process. Its the data (email accounts in k9 mail etc) that I am ideally needing saved as those are a pain in the arse to setup again. If root on the current rom cannot be done is there any other app that would save my data as I can save the apks using Astro.

I have been trying to root this thing will no luck. I know that you can use simple root or simple root OTA and what not. I am running the newest OTA from sprint and what not..I have tried installing the pcm file and what not but it says failed, system files are older or something of that nature. Is there a way to root without downloading Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0?

I rooted my phone with Unrevoked Forever and installed the Virtuous 2.2 ROM a while ago, anyway, I'm getting a notification about a system Update that wants to install Verizon Bloatware on my phone, so I was gonna install it then promptly delete the apps just to get rid of the notifications, but when I go to install, it counts down from 10 to restart, then does nothing. So the notifications keep coming up, no matter how many times I try it.

Just plucked up the courage to root my Desire. And now want to have a go at installing Froyo and looking for the easiest way. I've looked at ROM Manager and was wondering if its worth getting the paid version as it says you can get all the popular ROMs downloaded to your phone. Was wondering how good this app is and if anyone has had problems with getting the ROMs.
