Android :: Develop Android Apps Using A Samsumg Galaxy 5 Device
Oct 7, 2010
I am developing my first Android App. I have an application already running on emulator (Eclipse + Android dev. tools) on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - the Lucid Lynx - released in April 2010. I have already tryied the steps provided on Android Developers Portal on this link, but whenever I try to list my already connected device using ./adb devices
I get the following:
mmaia@mmaia-desktop:~/tools/android-sdk-linux_86/tools$ ./adb devices
List of devices attached
? no permissions
I have checked and when I run the virtual emulator the same command returns:
List of devices attached
? no permissions
emulator-5554 device
Also when I ask eclipse to run the emulator it finds the device(galaxy 5), see image below, but can't find serial, probably because of some permission, than I am only able to choose the virtual emulator.
How do I configure permission to use Galaxy 5 as a device while developing for Android under Ubuntu 10.04?

Since I don't know (and I don't think anyone does) when the next version of the Android Developer Phone that will support Android 2.x be available, can I use the following unlocked Android phone available on Amazon
http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Milestone-Unlocked-International-Warranty/dp/B0030G6HRQ/ref=sr_1_23?ie=UTF8&s=wireless&qid=1277232350&sr=8-23
To test my Android apps (that is after testing on simulators).

I ordered Le Pan II tablet yesterday.Today I found out that so far there are no ADB drivers released by manufacturer.Does it mean I will not be able to develop applications on this device at all? I do not mean developing applications that require root access (this tablet has not been rooted either but I am OK with this).

I'm planning to become android developer w/ Android 2.1 SDK For some reason I like to AT&T network. Since Motorola backflip is the only phone available on AT&T and reading recent reports that it only allows apps to be downloaded from Android Marketplace
I've a basic yet very important question:
Is it possible for a developer to write an app and upload to the device? If so my next doubt is how would I upgrade the OS from Android 1.5 to Android 2.1 on my backflip device?

Or must it be an unlocked or rooted phone? Can I install and test my apps on a phone that has not been unlocked and does not nave a contract?

Possible Duplicates:
Good book for beginning android development
The best book for programming in Android
The "best/easy to understand" "resource/tutorials/guides/book" wins the answer!
I'm really trying not be subjective here. Most guides I came up with on forums, etc., date back to 2007/2008 so I guess I want something more recent. (Some of them are reeeeeally outdated).

Now Google is working on App Inventor, a program that lets pretty much anybody piece together their own apps:
Android App Inventer Makes Average Joe a Developer | These are the Droids
I foresee the Android Market being flooded with DIY apps, some good, some junk. What say you? Good thing for Android or a disaster in the making?

I am about to start developing an android app and need to get an IDE. Eclipse and the android eclipse plugin appears to be the natural choice. However I am familiar with intelliJ and re-sharper so I would prefer use intelliJ.
Has anyone used http://code.google.com/p/idea-android/">http://code.google.com/p/idea-android/? Is this any good?
Should I just bite the bullet and learn Eclipse?

I've got an HTC Desire & downloaded a few apps/widgets from the market today. They seem to have downloaded ok and I can see them sitting in the 'downloads' tab of the market...but how do I actually get them from here onto my device to use them?
(Things I've tried...clicking on them in 'downloads' just shows more info on them and clicking install just re-downloads them, longholding just brings up info about them, I can't find a 'downloads' folder on my mobile, they aren't appearing with the other widgets or programs, adding the market on my mobile just links me back to the market homepage...i cant see anything in the user manual or learn more sections that is of help on this - they both say to go to all programs and my downloads but I don't have a my downloads just downloads section in the market which doesn't seem to move them to my device?).

I"m running Win XP 32 bit, SP3. I have Nexus one device. and I develop on Eclipse. I'm trying to install my app to test it on a real device - my own Nexus one. after downloading and installing the USB driver - the devices charges just fine. after I mount the USB storage (from the device) I can even see the phone's file system from the computer (thus able to move files in and out of the SD card). however - "adb devices" command returns an empty list. also, Eclipse "Device Chooser" doesn't show the device (it shows emulators I previously configured).

I had to do a factory reset of my X after the 2.2 update. I am now not able to install the paid apps I got from the market. I have receipts on Google Checkout for them, but when I go to the market to get them, it only gives me the option to "Buy" it again as it takes me right to Google checkout. If I go to "Options" and then "My Downloads", the apps are not located there. Anyone else have this happen to them? How do I fix this without having to buy the apps again?

I'm thinking about an Android app (with possibly an accompanying physical device), and i'm trying to figure out whether this is something that's feasible.
1) Let's say I plug my Android to my PC. Would it be possible for an app installed on the PC to communicate with an app running in the cell phone? I just need a very simplistic data exchange, it can even be one-way (just data pushed from the cell phone to the listening app on the PC, whenever the cell phone wants, I don't need any data sent from PC to phone).
When I plug it in, the phone gives me 4 options (charge, disk drive, HTC sync, tethering), which makes me think this is not doable, but still worth the shot.
2) Would it be possible for an app on the PC to talk to an app on the phone through any other way? (Wi-fi, bluetooth, etc). I'm guessing no on wi-fi since neither party has the other's IP (and I want this to kinda just work, not having to input IPs manually all the time).
3) If I make a device that's plugged to the little USB port at the bottom of the phone (and let's say this is a magical device that can do anything, I don't quite care about those details as long as it's doable). Can I have an Android app talk to that device?
4) Any other ideas to make the phone talk to a "device" that I make, or to an app in the PC are more than welcome. Going "through the web" could be an option (although there'd have to be a central server that I own as a middle man, I believe). But i'd prefer if the communication was direct between the two devices.

I have tried it on my Phone, tablets, on my brothers phone, it just wont connect. However, when I connected my phone with the network of my University, I worked the first time but the second time, same no connection problem.
