I have an Android app and some company is interested in using part of it and rebranding it for its customers. One of the options would involve licensing the code to them for use in this specific case. Would you recommend doing that as a good option? What is the cost of licensing code in comparison to the cost of the original development. Should the license be for any use of the code, for using the codebase/year?

Thought we'd go with something like BSD or maybe GPL/LGPL, but getting confused about it. Want a license that helps developers - doesn't hinder them - and an engine that's as open as possible.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm working on an Android App, and I want to provide a free demo and a paid full-version from the Android Market. However, I also want to provide the source code. I don't mind if people want to play with the code and install modified versions on their own devices. However, I don't want to see any free full-version binaries on the web, and a license like the GPL would allow anyone to offer some, probably even making profit that way.
If some people would rather build and deploy the app themselves instead of paying 1-5$, they can go ahead. But a convenient one-click-download button and other people making money from my efforts is not what I want. Is there any pre-existing license I can use for something like that? Furthermore, if I want to start an app as free and open source, but later decide that I want to make money from selling it, is there a FOSS license that allows me to move to the license I'm asking about above later?
I am building android jelly bean for my development board,I need to build google store apps with this image, but through research i came to know that google apps source code is not open source. In that case is there any way to get the google app source code? Do i need to purchase google apps source code or i must have to use only google apps apks provided by google.in the case if i have to use google apps apk only than what all licensing criteria i have to follow?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just finished reading the docs on Google's new Android License Verification Library. I often give out free copies of my applications to beta testers. I don't, however, want the beta testers to share the app with their friends. What's the best way to give out a device-specific license free version? From what I can tell I will need to create a custom policy and then maintain a list of authorized devices/accounts in my own backend that I can check. Is that what other devs are doing?

My question is do I need to buy a license if I publish my application as paid app in market? What is my app is free?
Just did a little search on google with my paid app name, I found these:

Someone bought the priced app from market with the "rooted" phone and copy the apk file, then post on the websites for others to download.
Should Android team give a better way to protect the priced apps?
For example, encrypt the apk with the unique device hardware id for each download request. And verify the key before execution. So the apk can only be used on this phone.
There should be much better and complicated ways. but this is the basic idea.
I have checked the BlackBerry app world, looks like they have something different:

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Chinese clone of Galaxy S4 called No.1 S6 with MTK6589 Cpu and Android 4.2.1 (Odexed Rom), well, I tried to replace some system app like contacts, phone and mms with the same apps taken from the Slim bean 4.2.2 Rom for the Google Nexus 4 that has the same screen resolution.
I odexed the slim bean apks with dexopt-wrapper as explained here [URL] ...., I signed them with auto-sign software, so I put them into system/app folder with right permissions, deleting old apks first, rebooted the phone, wiped cache in recovery and when the phone booted the apk I replaced was gone, so I think there's a compatibility problem between my system apps and nexus 4 ported apps, maybe I have to take the slim bean (or other ROMS, whatever) sources and edit the apks and make them compatible with my phone...
How to port system apps from other devices with different software?

View 1 Replies View RelatedDear Android community, i've a license/legal question regarding asking Google directions to be drawn directly into the MapView. Some of you know that asking google http://maps.google.com/maps/nav will give directions in Json + a Polyline encoded form. What i would like to know is, where is the Terms of Service regarding this functionality? It is for Google internal use or not? There's also the KML which gives similar informations. Please note that it is NOT for real time driving directions but a path to be drawn from a point to another and your position NOT refreshed in real time and of course it is for an app downloadable free of charge.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo, not much of a Google Talk user, but now and then. And, I mostly use it via my desktop gMail app.. not on my phone.
Anyway, I close out the Talk app, but no matter what, even if it is closed, killed, off, it activates itself when someone sends me a chat.. even if I am logged on via my gMail account.
How the heck can you shut it off? What is it that makes it start up because someone wants to chat. I see no way to stop it and I am not always in the mood or able to chat and do not want to be disturbed but this Google Talk seems to start up and alert you anyway.
Some of my closed apps automatically start when internet connection is opened. How do they sence the connection is opened? Is there an app that can stop them from opening?
My app killer will kill them when I manually hit the kill bottom or when the phone is locked. But there is no settings that stop them from starting and running after I start my data or WiFi connection.

I followed evilisto's guide to make honeycomb style lockscreen.I could get the framework layout working, but since I didn't know how to get java source code for my device, so I just decompiled framework2.jar and modified MultiWaveView.smali(since framework.jar doesn't have this file, I had to decompile framework2.jar), compiled and odexed it.But the radious of chevron is too big and animation speed didn't change. What should I modify to change animation speed and radious of chevron?
I changed the values to extremely high value, but it seems framework2.jar and odex doesn't work for lockscreen chevron at all..

I was very interested, even intrigued by the Maps application on the android emulator. Where can I get the source code for it?

Today is quite a big day to me. After all the work, studies and sleepless nights that I've been through, I've decided to share all that with the community opening the source of Phonebook Sharing. We have been chosen by the Android powered users as well as by Google as one of the ADC's Top 20 Social Networking applications. This application explores and makes use of many many features available by the platform (Android 1.5 / 1.6) as well as custom components/features that the platform does not provide yet, such as ListView pagination. Not just the Android client but also the J2EE server, I've made available quite a few interessting things such as Video Streaming and EJB3 stuff. I've also built a fake server that responds to all the request events made by the android client therefore you will be able to run client/ server and see how the communication goes. I'm still wrapping up the project building some documentation on our Wiki section.
