Android :: Widget For Turning Phone Off?
Sep 2, 2010
On my Epic 4g I have to hold down a physicall button to power down. Then, I have to choose from a menu to power down, and then I have to say ok to "Are you sure you want to turn phone off?"Is there a widget/util that I can download where I can just press it and have my phone turn off?

I've looked and haven't found anything similar. I use the HTC widgets to turn WiFi, GPS, and Mobile Network on and off for when I'm at home (WiFi) and out (GPS and 3G on).
I've noticed several times that, although the switches are in the right positions, when I'm out I have no data connection. No 3G in the status bar either. When I reboot the phone everything is fine, so it's not the area I'm in. Any ideas?

When I trun my phone on, the scene changes from the scene I had chosen (the waving grass) to "current (unsaved)".If I change it to the one I prefer (saved with my name) I am asked to "save or cancel" the incorrect one.I click cancel, and all is well. But why does it change and how do I keep the scene selected that I want?I just want it to stick on the scene that I have chosen.

One of the first things I did when I got my Evo was turn off HTC Sense - can't stand its gaudy widgets and general bloat. However, one thing I am missing is HTC's little toggle widgets - particularly the one that lets you turn on/off 4G. The native Android toggle widget doesn't let you control 4G. Does anyone know any 3rd-party / alternative widgets to toggle 4G? Given that it's the first 4G phone, they probably don't exist but it would be cool if someone with know, how could develop one!

I've just discovered there is a widget for turning mobile network on and off which is fantastic as I've been looking for one in the market, cos I'm sick of doing it the long winded way. The only thing is, it doesn't work..... If you long press the home screen its under htc widgets, then settings. Has anyone else got one and does it work for them?

I see another thread on Locale, but it seems to be focused on it technical shortcomings. I thought a thread about how people are using this app would be helpful.
Now... I use Locale for the following:
- Turning the ringer down when I get to work (obviouse one)
- Turning GPS/Bluetooth/wifi on when I plug it in the phone (think car dock)
- Turn on Wifi when I get near my known hot spots.
- Turn off GPS/Bluetooth/wifi off and turn down brightness when my battery is low.
And the last one is a good one for me...
- I have a GV number. When I call my phone from that number, it turns the ringer volume all the way up and it turns on wifi and GPS. This is my "lost phone aid". It turns on the locating features so I can see where the phone is using iGoogle and Latitude, and I can hear the phone if it is "in the cushions" on vibrate.
Anyone else get creative with Locale?

I just joined the site and have been playing around with development for Android platforms for the past few weeks. Is it possible to write code which allows an app to limit the sending and receiving of text messages and phone calls, kinda like airplane mode, over a certain period of time?

I just bought my first Droid phone. The notice that came in the package said to charge the phone before turning it on. There's a little yellow/orangish light that came on but nothing saying where it's at in the charging process. Will the light change color once it's fully charged? Am I okay to turn it on now?

I found that by typing on the call screen:
*#*#4636#*#* ( *#*#INFO#*#* )
display the menu:
"Phone info" and scroll down to
"Turn off radio"
and you can access some additionnal settings and it seems you can turn off GSM networks without disabling FM radio or other networks (source:
[URL]....
I try it and this is working on my Samsung Galaxy S II. But... any gadget or a small program (maybe on Market) whit which this can be done? (with simple one touch of a single icon on the screen)

As we know that Android phone gets locked after screen timeout. But I want to lock the phone on demand as well. i.e. without waiting for screen timeout to occur.. As in nexus android phone there is hard button on top for making screen turn off and lock the phone. i have to do same functionality but by using soft key i.e. in a programmatic way. What are the APIs or routines that can help me ? Can someone point me for getting this functionality?

I'm creating a datalogger which logs the gps data and the sensor data of the phone. I've just a strange problem. If the phone is not touched for few minutes it goes into standby mode (screen goes black), and that causes the logger to stop working. Actually the firewriting in the logger stops working. The GPS resumes fine after coming out of blackscreen, but when I check the log I created it only shows saved points for few minutes. Does anyone have idea what is causing this?

Is is possible for me to have a keypad style keyboard when I hold the phone vertical and then switch to the qwerty keyboard when I turn it to the horizontal? If so, how do I do it? I just find that the qwerty is a bit too small for my fingers when it's squashed up in portrait mode.

I just want to verify that my phone is off before bed, because I forget whether I've turned off my phone or whether it's just sleeping.I pick up my phone, but I can't verify that it's turned off without unintentionally turning it on, because the only way to check that I know of is to press the power/sleep button. Unfortunately, that will turn on the phone if I've already turned it off, and therefore I have to wait as it boots up, then power it down.Is there a way to verify that an Evo phone is turned off without turning it on in the process of verifying that it is off?

I have an activity that shows up when the phone screen goes to sleep/turns off ie turns black.
For some reason, the phone turns on when the volume buttons or the camera buttons are pressed. By turns on, I mean the screen wakes up or comes back from the black screen state.
I've tried using dispatchKeyEvent(KeyEvent event) and the buttons are disabled on the activity, but they still wake up the phone.

today my desire for the first time turned off by itself.it happened while the mobile internet was turned on and i was trying to load a youtube video. the phone just turned off. i turned it back on, and it turned off again.i managed to turn off the mobile internet, and the problem stopped. i tried watching the same youtube vid via wireless and the problem never happened.i then tried using google navigator with the mobile internet on and phone turned off once again. thing is i have had the phone for 2-3 months and this has never happened before. this morning my phone updated 3 apps, "quick settings", "advance task killer" and "google maps". could these updates be the source of the problem? o2 said to try the sim in another phone and rule out a network fault. still need to get round to doing that.

This may be really dumb, but how do I turn off the phone? Or know that it is off? I don't get many calls or texts and want to have the battery last by turning the phone off. I push the "off" button and the screen darkens, but the phone stays very warm. Is this normal for the off state?

does this put the phone in silent mode whatever you are doing or does it only silent an incoming call? For me its hit and miss.it will ring/vibrate upside down, so then i have to turn it the right way and then turn it back upside down for it to go silent.this would have been ideal for me when in meetings, but if it only works if you turn it upside down when you get a call its not as useful.

This problem only started after I bought JuiceDefender and I think I have all the settings set up properly so I'm not sure why this is happening. In the Android settings I have it set for a 30 second timeout, but for some reason my screen will fade brightness, but never go off completely.

I found a few threads about this in the European HTC Hero section.I also saw someone posted the question in Sprint's thread, however I can't find it through the search function.Does anyone know of an app or any way to turn the screen off while making a call.I know it automatically times out and turns the screen off, but I have hit the end call button too many times now.Hopefully there is a fix out or in the works for this.

Well so after a cross country meet I had my Droid 2 in my backpack and I was going to call my dad. It wouldn't turn on, so I thought that it was just because my battery died. When I got home the next day, I charged it for a while and then turned it on, but it still wouldn't charge. I'm thinking that it is dead, but the charger is messed up because I didn't see anything on the Droid that was blinking, so I think that means its not charging. Can someone please help me?

Can somebody please tell me how to get rid of the voice mail notifications without turning the phone off? It's very annoying. Maybe I'm too dumb, but after I listen the voice mail and delete it, the notification is still in the notification area. I don't see any setting or way to remove it. I have to restart the phone. Anybody has this problem?
