Android :: Text Entry Box Navigation

Still grappling with the on-screen keyboard on my HTC Desire (came frmo BB).
One thing that continues to annoy me is that when I am entering longer strings of text (eg Facebook comments/status, emails) there is no way for me to go back in the text to change or correct something. I either have to backspace all the way there, or have to try and put the cursor there by touching the screen at just the right place - either my fingers are too big or the screen isn't sensitive enough as I can never get this right.
why can't there be up/down/left/right arrows to move the cursor within the text entry box?
And another thing - there are some entry fields where the keyboard pops up and actually obscures the text entry box other than the first line and you can't see what you're typing.

when i am composing a text message, sometimes the box of the entry goes larger and goes back smaller, is there a way to increase the text entry box size, say, double tap on it to bring up a whole screen text entry area?

How do you get navigation as an option when using a calendar entry or a contact entry? Navigation does not show as an option to select.

I've just made the switch from WinMo to Android (Samsung Galaxy). I was wondering if there is a good program for repetitive text entry? I used TapText by DinarSoft on WinMo and that was great for tapping and it would enter preconfigured text - date, name, address - anything you wanted! Is there anything similar for Android? I've had a search but all I can find is stuff for texting/sms but this is for use in any program that has a text field.

Does anyone know of a way, or a plugin or a program add on, to send the text of a text message to the creation of a new calendar entry, with the subject or notes pre-filled with the text data. I find I'm doing it a lot. OK, I can effectivley copy/create new entry/paste.

I'm dealing with a phone that has no physical keyboard and I'm using my own custom view for rendering. The device I'm working with, by default, seems to be in a T9 type entry mode where it suggests blocks of text. However, it never sends me the actual key events.
How do I tell whatever soft-keyboard that pops up to enter 'dumb' key event sending mode?
The InputMethodManager has a "isAcceptinText()" call which would tell me if it's in event-sending mode, but not a method to set it. Digging through the documentation hasn't produced any insight. How do I tell the input manager that I only want key events?

I've had an HTC Desire for a few months now, and I just can't get used to full keyboard touchscreen style text entry. I like old school phone keypad style T9 text entry - I find it much faster (well, once I've entered lots of extra words!) than a keyboard and like to be able to send texts with one hand.
However I'm not happy with the stock android keypad, and my phone has just received a new update that makes it EVEN WORSE.
For example, it appears to in fact be impossible to enter accented characters (e.g.). As I occasionally communicate in languages other than english this is horrendous. With the new update they've also removed the shortcuts to ! and ? and replaced them with the voice recognition button, a feature in Android which I have found to be totally pointless (most of the time after speaking something it just says 'processing' for ages, then either fails or comes up with nonsense. Far quicker to type! Whats the point?!?). It's also added some kind of auto correction which I can't work out how to turn off which will prioritise words that I haven't even typed because I guess it thinks thats a more popular word and I misspelled it and I then have to go into 'more words' to chose the bloody word I typed in to start with!
However it seems all the other alternative keyboards are more designed to replace qwerty. I tried SwiftKey for a little while and it's clever, but it's still all querty and I'm not sure I like all the autocorrection - often correcting something that WAS correct into something that isn't!
About to try HTC_IME once I've worked out how to install it, but are there any other phone-keypad-style text entry apps out there to replace the stock android? Just anything that works like, say, an old Nokia or Sony would be totally great. That can't be too much to ask can it?

Just wanted to let everyone know how much I love my Eris now that I have played all weekend! Bet ya'll missed me! Ok now on to the reason for the post...I just wanted to know what keyboard everyone uses for texting? I learned on the phonepad to text with T9. I was very excited to see the option to use that virtual keypad to text. I am much faster on it than on the qwerty for sure!! Love love love this phone!

I just got the official OTA update to 2.1 and I've had a lot of fun playing with it, but one thing I was really looking forward to was the "New support for Voice-to-Text entry" that Verizon claimed on it's official Droid Eris Update Features List: http://support.vzw.com/pdf/system_update/eris.pdf
At this point I feel like an idiot not being able to find it. I know that it's usually just a microphone on the keyboard, but there is definitely no mic icon for me. Is anyone else having this problem? Has anyone been able to use voice-to-text on their newly updated Droid Eris?
I would honestly love to find out that I'm just being stupid and the answer is right in front of me... but the more I look, the more discouraged I get.

I have noticed that when using my phone to reply to a long string of text on forums (or at least some of them) I seem to hit a roadblock at some point. By that I mean, if I wanted to reply to a message like I am typing this right now, if I want to scroll down to the bottom I am unable to if the length of the text reaches a certain point. Or in another situation, I could be typing my reply, but once I write enough to reach that limit I am unable to type any further. This only applies when wanting to reply at the bottom of the string of text. There are ways to work around the issue, but in certain cases they aren't always preferred.

it sounds like most of my concerns have been covered. able to download Google Navigation, add Google Voice Search button to home screen, trash Bing widget. But my questions are in regards to the text entry boxes and the browser. In the browser where you go to type the URL, there is a MIC button, right? If I press that, what voice search does it use? Does the stock browser use Bing Voice Search? Would I need a different browser to be able to utilize Google Voice Search within my browser? Same with sending text messages, emails... anywhere there is a text entry box. Do these boxes that pop up the keyboard and present you with a MIC button use Bing Voice or Google Voice to enter the text?

Anyone else having problems with entering text while using opera mini? To clarify: about 1 out of every 3 times I enter text on any type of web site, or forum such as this, after entering and pressing POST, it erases all of the text. I am using 2.1v2 and had this problem before I updated. I am also using swype lite.

Is there any way to do better text entry? I have the Motorola Droid, and correcting mistakes is absolutely terrible. Trying to get the cursor at the exact point where you want to make an edit is virtually impossible without multiple tries. Isn't there an app that allows for something like the magnifying glass on the iPhone?

So I'm really starting to dig into my Droid now after 2 days and I've got a question! (surprise lol)
When entering in text and using the predictive text entry, when you select the word it always enters a space...if you're saving something it will append that space to the end of the filename making you have to hit the "X" Delete key to erase it. Is there any easy way to not have it input the space automatically (didn't see it in settings?).
Also how do you tell it to automatically put a period at the end of the word etc? I've done it by accident before but no idea how I did it!

I can't see any arrow keys on the keyboard to move the cursor around in a text entry box. So, when I want to correct a typing mistake I have to stab my finger somewhere to the right of the error then backspace over the error (usually deleting a few correct characters in the process) before retyping. There must be a better way.

I can't select 3rd party text entry types.
Go into Language & Keyboard - I see Big Buttons Keyboard, Swiftkey Beta and HTC_IME mod listed, all 3rd party keyboards I have installed.
I select one of them. It gives me a warning, I say OK, box is ticked. This keyboard is now selected.
I go to create a new SMS or enter something into the browser.
Stock HTC Keyboard.
I try again. Choose a different 3rd party keyboard. Stock HTC Keyboard.
Am I Just missing some essential stage in the process here, or is something messed up?

Can anyone confirm if Google Navigation can be used to just show your progress/location on a road while driving, without having to have an actual destination input?I know this was shown on a few of Rob's videos as not being possible, but just wanted to confirm if anyone had any further info on it.

What is difference between "Navigation" and "Sprint Navigation" apps?Newby to the smart phone, and am still trying to understand this "app" stuff. The "Navigation" app is a blue arrow, and is the one I use for map and voice navigation. The "Sprint Navigation" app seems to do the same thing in a much more belabored manner. Are these both Sprint, or what? Why two similar apps?Is one supposed to do something that the other doesn't. I don't get it.

I would like to insert a new event (start time, end time, and event name) in the user's calendar. How can I do that? I have the impression, that the SDK does not have the API for it (yet), but the G1 has the APIs. Would the CalendarProvider class the way to go?
See also: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1389 Did anyone succeed in adding an event to the calendar?

I'd like to query the contacts and create an RDF model (FOAF to be exact) from the data received. Therefore it would be necessary to know what kind of data I'm dealing with.
I'll need the following information about each contact: name, phone number(s), email address(es), IM ID(s) + corresponding IM service.
I thought that the best way to get this information was via the ContactsContract.Data table. So my query looks like this:
code:...........
Cursor contactsTable = managedQuery(contactsURI, projection, where, whereArgs, null); </code>
(I need the DATA_VERSION to know if updating the model is necessary.)
Now I'd like to go through the table and add properties to my model for each entry. Therefore I'd need to know if the row I'm currently reading contains a name, an email address, a phone number or an IM ID (it would be best if I could also get information about the IM service the ID belongs to).
Is it possible to get the CONTENT_ITEM_TYPE or anything like that? Or should I perform a single query for each type and then connect the information via the CONTACT_ID?

i have a application which will listen to incoming calls. so in the TelephonyManager.CALL_STATE_IDLE state which means the call is hung up i'm deleting the current number from the Call Log.To delete the Call log i used ContentObserver which will notify me when a new entry is added to the Call Log.10 out of 8 times this works fine. but sometimes onChange(boolean b) is not notified.my guess is this can happen due to last entry is not added to the CallLog in CALL_STATE_IDLE state. so that means i'm doing this in a wrong place.so guys could you please let me know when should i delete this call log?
