Motorola Droid :: Google Navigation Showing Navigation W/o Destination
Nov 3, 2009
Can anyone confirm if Google Navigation can be used to just show your progress/location on a road while driving, without having to have an actual destination input?I know this was shown on a few of Rob's videos as not being possible, but just wanted to confirm if anyone had any further info on it.

I tried since many hours to launch navigation from my app. I want navigation without destination. I tried with:
Intent i = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, Uri.parse("google.navigation:q="));
startActivity(i);
That launches navigation but with destination not found. I tried too to launch:
processName, packageName with startIntent with com.google.android.apps.maps,
com.google.android.apps.maps:driveabout and
**com.google.android.maps.driveabout.app.DestinationActivity
with no success too :/

When I launch Navigation, I'm given four methods of choosing a location: "Speak Destination", "Type Destination", "Go home", and "Map". Clicking on "Map" brings me to a map view (cool)... which doesn't actually let me select a destination (WTF). Is this bug present only in Jelly Bean? I can't believe it wouldn't have been caught earlier otherwise.
Oh, launching Maps and long-pressing on a point allows me to select it and set it as a destination for Navigation. Ironic that this functionality is missing from Navigation itself.
Is there a fix for this, or is Maps the only way to select a destination by clicking on a map?

When trying to use the Google Navigation app it just displays "searching for gps." at the bottom of the screen and never locks in on my location. In the location and security settings both "use wireless networks" and "use gps satellites" are checked.Am I doing something wrong or is there a problem with the phone?

I thought I read somewhere that one of the mapping programs has a speedometer, but I haven't been able to find it as on option in either Google Nav or Maps. Am I missing a setting somewhere, or was I just dreaming about the speedometer?

Just used Nav in my car while listening to my radio (FM non-Droid radio).Nav worked fine but I could not hear the Nav's voice turn-by-turn instructions. The radio drowned them out.I realize Nav is still in beta. But there is no place to send this bug/suggestion to the developers.

Is supposed to cache the route as to not drain the battery life as fast and also to help with poor reception areas. My question is do you have to tell it to cache or is that done automatically?

I'm on the outskirts of Houston. I was using a Garmin that was quite reliable. I started using the Google Navigation on the Droid and was instantly hooked. I love hearing the actual street names and running it in "satellite" mode, so I can see the actual buildings and scenery. However, over time, I've seen that it gets me to about 6 out of 10 destinations perfectly. The ones it misses are usually at least pretty close, but sometimes I really have to search and sometimes find that it overshot the location by a mile or so, or that the big loop that took ten minutes to complete could have been eliminated by just turning right at "x" and left at "y"...

Just got off the phone with two VZW reps who couldn't give me an answer and suggested that I use VZ Navigator since Verizon can support that software, LOL. My Problem: Used Google Maps Navigator for the first time today. Was using my Motorola Car Dock I purchased and got the address put in and everything then tapped "Navigate". Si there I am and have my nice map view of the route I'm taking and every 30 or so seconds it would flip to a grey screen with multiple tiered options, first of which was "my location" and the address. Below that was the option to tap "Navigate" again which took me back to the map view as it should be. Problem is that it just kept popping back into the grey tier screen every 30 or so seconds. I took it off the dock and this doesn't seem to be happening while not on the dock although I get another message telling me to detach the charger from the wall to conserve battery...WTF? After speaking in depth with VZW reps they seem clueless. First rep told me to try and uninstall Google maps and reinstall (which come to find out I can't do after speaking to the second rep) while the second rep seemed to want to glorify his Droid Incredible and how great it was over the Droid X. he offered to reset my phone but advised I would have to sync all my contacts again, redo all my widgets and reconfigure all my e-mail addresses. Anybody else experiencing this problem with the car Dock and Google Navigation?

I have 2 versions it seems of Google Maps. 1 goes straight to he map after tapping the icon, 1 have a blue "Navigation" logo and load bar below it. The latter kept saying "unable to reach your destination" or something like that, so I slid it to trash. I'm trying to find out how to get Google Maps WITH turn-by-turn navigation. Ever since I moved that one icon to trash, I can't seem to get the one that has that blue Navigation load screen.

After seeing the image of Google selling the unlocked version of the Nexus One, I'm intrigued to buy one. However, I'm wondering if Google navigation will work without Internet as I don't plan on buying a data plan. If Google navigation does work, can you tell me what features, if any, are lacking because of the loss of Internet. I understand that this cannot answered by a person without a Nexus One, since its not released yet, but does anyone with a Motorola Milestone know the answer?

What is difference between "Navigation" and "Sprint Navigation" apps?Newby to the smart phone, and am still trying to understand this "app" stuff.The "Navigation" app is a blue arrow, and is the one I use for map and voice navigation.The "Sprint Navigation" app seems to do the same thing in a much more belabored manner.Are these both Sprint, or what?Why two similar apps?Is one supposed to do something that the other doesn't. I don't get it.

I've been doing a lot of research lately, on this forum as well as others and I read somewhere that someone was able to port google maps navigation to there eris. I can't remember if it was this site or somewhere else. Can anyone confirm this? I also read that the people over at xda-developers were able to get it working on the G1 which I believe is running either android 1.5 or 1.6.
Here is the link:
Google Maps Navigation Ported to T-Mobile G1 | Android Central.
It would be great if we could get this working on our Eris, I really don't care for any of the other 2.0 features besides this.

I've seen more than a few users in the OTA section commenting on the new Navigation Shortcut for Google Maps. This is NOT part of the OTA, per se, but is due to a Google Maps for Mobile update that coincidentally debuted today.
This is from the Official Google Mobile Blog:

Am I doing something wrong? If I am using Google Maps/Navigator - happily following along as my car wends it's way down the street and I have to exit to say, answer a phone call, look at another app. when I go back into Navigator my destination info is gone. I have to re-enter my destination.

For some reason, the navigation app will just start it self up. I thought maybe I was accidentally touching the shortcut on my home screen so I removed it, but it still happens. I "went along with it" as it asked me to show my gps settings since I have gps disabled. So I enabled it to see if it would bring me to a map, but it just brings me to the default navigation screen. Running 2.2, stock rom, but super user access.
