Android : Sharing Common View Layouts And Resources Across Multiple Applications

Jun 2, 2009

I am working on developing several individual android applications. We had created common UI Layout View XMLs, classes and resources. I would like to share these common layout xml, classes and resources across all of my android applications. I dont want to duplicate them in my applications. Is there any easy way to do this?

Android :: Integrate Applications With Common Settings Application - View - Activity

The application I am developing is in large parts a background-only Service BUT requires some settings that the user must add. Is there a way to integrate applications with the common Settings application/view/activity?

Android :: Multiple Activites That Share 75% Of Layout - Layouts Within Layouts?

Sep 6, 2010

I'm creating a game where there's a screen that, for the most part, is shared by four different activites - but a key portion of the screen will be completely different, depending upon which activity is active. Basically, on the left will be an image of the player and along the bottom there will be a row of buttons (let's say for Armour, Weapons, Magic, Skills). This leaves the top-right portion, which will need to dynamically change to represent the button pressed. (So, one moment the top-right portion is the armour selection activity, and the next it's the weapon selection activity, and so on.)

Is this possible? Can I have a layout within a layout and dynamically point the nested layout at a (nested) layout.xml of my choosing? Or, am I looking at just duplicating most of the layout four times (for the four different activities?) Or, am I going to be looking at linking the four activities to a (the top-right) view component, and then having to dynamically construct all of *that* view's child views based on the currently active activity? Well, that's about as much sense as I can make this question make.

Android :: Several Activities Sharing Common Code

Jul 2, 2010

I have an Android application composed by several Activities. Most of them need to check whether an active network is available or not:

public boolean isNetworkAvailable() {
ConnectivityManager cm = (ConnectivityManager)
getSystemService(Context.CONNECTIVITY_SERVICE);
TelephonyManager tm = (TelephonyManager)
getSystemService(Context.TELEPHONY_SERVICE);
...
}

I would like to move that code to a helper class in order to avoid the need to write that code in every Activity, but calls to getSystemService are only allowed from an Activity. The other alternative is to move that code to a parent activity use inheritance but:
Every activity already extends from android.app.Activity
Some of my activities already extend from a common my.package.BaseActivity
(Activity <- BaseActivity <- XXXActivity)

What do you recommend in this case? Is there any other alternative?

Android : Get Resources To Select With Layouts For Different Densities?

Sep 14, 2010

I'm trying to understand the layout engine for different screen sizes and densities, to look into adding support for tablets in my apps.

I was under the impression that you could also have different layouts based on screen density as well in android, and it would select the appropriate one.

I have the following:

a layout-normal-mdpi directory with a layout.xml file. a layout-normal-hdpi directory with a layout xml file with a different layout for high density screens.

In my application manifest I have min SDK as 3, target SDK as 5. I have a supports-screens element and declare the following:

android:largeScreens="true" android:anyDensity="true"

I'm compiling against Android 2.2 library.

However, when I run an AVD that is in WVGA854 mode with a lcd.density of 240, android isn't using my hdpi layout, it still uses my mdpi layout.

Android :: Should App's With Multiple Layouts Have Multiple Activities To Handle Each

Jul 1, 2010

I'm planning to develop and app that presents the users with several different screens (of different information).
Was wondering what would be the best way to implement this?

Is it better to have separate XML layouts and an activity to display and allow the user to interact with each screen of data?

OR would handling all of these in the same activity be more efficient (and dynamically load / unload each layout)?

Android :: Sharing Resources Between Service - Application In Phone?

Feb 24, 2010

The code I am trying to implement includes a service and an application. When the application is first launched, it starts the service using the
startService(svc_name) call. Here svc name is an intent pointing to the class that runs the service.

I want to share a resource(file/socket connection) between the service and the application. For example one writes to a file and another reads from it. I am unable to get proper sync between the service and app. Could you please let me know how this can be achieved?

Android : Using Multiple Layouts For Different Screens

Dec 3, 2009

I am getting my feet wet developing software for the Android. My test app will have multiple screens (each having their own layout file). The main screen will direct the user to view the other screens based on user input. I kinda see this as layers of cake. Bottom layer being main; then you add and remove layers as the user makes UI inputs. The crazy trouble is how to view a second layer. I have created a second class which has its own onCreate method, which has its on setContentView(R.layout.secondlayer).

This class extends Activity much like my primary class does. I have a click event on a button within the main layout. This button will instantiate the new second layer class which I have done. And that is where my story endsI don't know what to do from this point. This is surely a newbie question If someone has an example that would be extremely helpful teach me to fish and I will be on my way.

Android :: Use Motion Events With Multiple Layouts

Aug 22, 2009

I'm beginning in android development, and I've stumbled upon a problem. My application has different layouts stored in xml files, and I use motion events such as onFling or onSingleTapup. These motion events seem to apply whatever layout i'm in. My problem is simply identifying which layout i'm currently using so I can define the appropriate action. I guess what i'm trying to do is a bit like this:

@Override public boolean onSingleTapUp(MotionEvent e) { if(using main layout) { //do this } else if (using settings layout) { // do that } return false;

}

Android : ListViews With Multiple Item Layouts

Aug 5, 2010

I have a ListView on my ListActivity and I'd like the rows of the ListView to be 1 of 3 different layouts. The first item in my list is always going to use layout A, the second item in my list is always going to use layout B, and all subsequent items are going to use layout C.

Here is my getView function: Code...

R.id.label1 and R.id.label2 are TextViews on R.layout.layout_A. However, txtLabel1 and txtLabel2 are null after trying to set them. Why?

I stepped through this code in the debugger and it inflated the correct layout (R.layout.layout_A) and fell into the correct case below to set the R.id.label1 and R.id.label2 text. Also, if there is a better way to do this, please let me know.

Android : UI Design Suggestions For Display And Switching Between Multiple Layouts

Jun 26, 2010

I'm trying to create an app that offers the user 3 different kinds of layouts. The only common portion for all 3 would be the TextView (located at the top) that would display information specific to the currently displayed layout and 3 buttons to select the required layouts.

Is there some way we can create this UI in XML to keep only one constant part(the upper TextView) and dynamically display any one of the 3 layouts below it?
Would it be better to create separate XML's for each of the layouts (each including the upper TextView in them)?
OR would doing this via code be better?

Fast switching between the 3 layouts is important. TIA

[EDIT 1]
Actually they are 3 different layouts, with several "child" layouts and views within each of them. Could a ViewFlipper be used for switching between these? I was thinking that a ViewFlipper was only for switching between View elements?

I do have them in individual XML's right now but am looking for some way to load and unload them fast. Not sure how to do the hiding thing, will try reading up on that. [/EDIT 1]

Android :: Tab View Initialization - XML File Layouts

Jul 2, 2010

I have a problem with a tab view on android. I am using 4 xml layout files (each a RelativeLayout) as the content for tabs in a tab view. The main.xml contains: TabHost (@android:id/tabhost) containing a linearLayout which contains a TabWidget (@android:id/tabs) and a FrameLayout (@android:id/tabcontent). If I embeded the multiple one after another in the in the main.xml everything works fine (except my main.xml is unmaintainable which is the problem I want to solve by splitting the files into a simple main.xml which defines the tab and the content frame and then push the views onto this). The code I have to inflate and insert the 4 RelativeLayout xml files into the tab content is as follows:

mTabHost = getTabHost(); View wv = null;
wv = LayoutInflater.from(this).inflate(R.layout.user_tab, mTabHost.getTabContentView(), true);
mTabHost.addTab(mTabHost.newTabSpec("User").setIndicator("User").setContent(wv.getId()));
wv = LayoutInflater.from(this).inflate(R.layout.track_tab, mTabHost.getTabContentView(), true);
mTabHost.addTab(mTabHost.newTabSpec("Track").setIndicator("Track").setContent(wv.getId()));
wv = LayoutInflater.from(this).inflate(R.layout.chart_tab, mTabHost.getTabContentView(), true);
mTabHost.addTab(mTabHost.newTabSpec("Chart").setIndicator("Chart").setContent(wv.getId()));
// And so on for the multiple tabs.

When I run this the first tab (User) is empty and the remaining tabs have all the content from all the views. So tab2 has the content from tab1-4, tab3 has the content from tab1-4 and tab4 has the content from tab1-4. Returning to tab1 it then has all the content from tab1-4 now. The code works just fine, the events on the various objects in the views etc all are good. It is just that they are all muddled together in the view. What is causing this and how to correct it?

Android :: View Hierarchies In Layouts Are Now Likely To Cause Crashes

Apr 24, 2009

Having read http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2009/04/future-proofing-your-a... l I noted this little section;

"Due to changes in the View rendering infrastructure, unreasonably deep (more than 10 or so) or broad (more than 30 total) View hierarchies in layouts are now likely to cause crashes. This was always a risk for excessively complex layouts, but you can think of Android 1.5 as being better than 1.1 at exposing this problem..."

Will the SDK warn us when we're reaching the limit for crashes?

And more to the point why does it crash and not return some form of meaningful error to the app? With an error code or thrown exception developers could create various levels of layout complexity and step down the layout complexity level until they find one the device will support.

No matter what the post says I see this as a regression in functionality and I definitely do not see it as "Android 1.5 as being better than 1.1" in any way.

I did try to use the Android Library concept (http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/eclipse-adt.html#libraryProject) but never got it to work in Android 1.x

I'm amazed by the lack of information on the subject. It seems like Google has aimed Android development at pet projects and not real development. Variant handling should have been solved ages ago.

Android :: Sharing Elements Between Applications

Jun 10, 2010

Here's a quote from Android's Dev Guide: A central feature of Android is that one application can make use of elements of other applications (provided those applications permit it). For example, if your application needs to display a scrolling list of images and another application has developed a suitable scroller and made it available to others, you can call upon that scroller to do the work, rather than develop your own. Isn't it a bad practice to make an app dependent on other apps?

Android :: Options For Sharing App Data On Multiple Phones

Aug 22, 2010

I'm looking for suggestions for ways to share Android app data between phones running the same app. For example, lets say I have an app that stores a database of book reviews. If person A has a book review that person B doesn't have, what are the options for getting that information from person A's phone to person B's phone?

Currently, I'm aware of the following options:

- Upload data from person A's phone to a server, then download data from server to Person B's phone.
- Write code to have the phones sync up using bluetooth
- Write code to send SMS messages

I'm wondering if there are any more options besides these, and if there's actually a best-practice for accomplishing this?

Ideally, I want the users to simply click a button in the app to make the sharing take place, so I don't want to go down the bluetooth route because that requires the user to do a bit of setup (or assumes they already have set things up in the form of bluetooth settings).

Since the data can be of variable length and potentially large, I believe that would rule out text messaging.

As far as the server route goes, from what I understand this seems to be an ok way of doing things, but my problem is that I have no experience with having users potentially sign in to a server and then uploading data. I don't know of the cost concerns (if any), or of potential security concerns (allowing just anyone to upload data, I'm not sure if I would have to take steps to ensure someone couldn't bypass the app and upload malicious data).

Android :: Sharing Code Between Applications As In Eclipse

Aug 26, 2010

I have ten, possibly more, apps I'm developing that all share logic. 50-75% of the logic is the same - perfect for some time of library or code sharing. However, after reading the posts here and trying to share code in Eclipse, I'm not sure that's going to work. I tried going to project -> properties -> build path -> link source and adding the src and gen folders of the project with the shared code and then importing the classes I need. That seems to work in the IDE, but gives an error during runtime: class not found. This seems to be a common error for people attempting this.

I am slowly deciding that shared code is not the best approach in this scenario. Android doesn't seem to work well with this type of code sharing. For one thing resources are not packed in libraries, but references (R.whatever) must exist so as not to create errors. This can be designed around, but the effort and headache is probably worse than simply creating multiple copies. My experience seems typical, based on what I've read. Is it? Have you experienced success or failure with sharing code and/or custom libraries? Am I off-base in thinking that multiple code copies will be smoother sailing than fighting the shared code approach?
