Android :: How To Reuse Code And Resources In Several Applications

Oct 7, 2010

How can I reuse code AND resources in several applications? I have a fairly large code base (including resources) that I want to reuse i several applications. How can I do that?

I did try to use the Android Library concept (http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/eclipse-adt.html#libraryProject) but never got it to work in Android 1.x

I'm amazed by the lack of information on the subject. It seems like Google has aimed Android development at pet projects and not real development. Variant handling should have been solved ages ago.

Android :: Reuse Main Code Base Without Having To Copy Whole Droid Project Each Time?

Nov 15, 2010

I have an Android code base which uses APIs with settings to get different data for several apps. All apps use the same code base but with one or two design tweaks. So how do I re-use the main code base without having to copy the whole Android project each time?

iPhone uses multiple targets in the same project which works well. If android cant do this do I need to compile binaries of the code base in one project and then import into each new app project? If so how? I'm using Eclipse and am an intermediate Java developer.

Android :: Reusing Code And Resources From Another Project

Dec 10, 2009

I have project A with some classes and some resources (used for classes configuration). I'd like to reuse its classes (and resources necessary for them) in another project B (and possibly in more projects). Currently I have 2 projects in Eclipse and they both builds fine, but when project B is started in emulator it fails with error. It should get classes and resources from both projects and package them together. 2) Make a third project which consists of symbolic links to classes and resources of those two projects. 3) Make project A as a service and consume it in project B. They all are imperfect: - 1 and 2 would pack classes and resources of project A into the .apk of project B. - 3 has performance penalty and reuse is not so easy.

But what about a float value, like 0.1 or 1.4? How can such float value be defined in resource file and accessed from code? Is it possible at all?

Android :: Code To Uninstall Applications?

I wan't to uninstall applications using my application... I can retrieve the list of packages installed but I don't know how to remove them... I used the PackageManager class, getInstalledApplications() method... I can't find any method like removeApplication() or uninstallApplication().

the only method I saw in this class is the removePackageFromPreferred (String packageName) method... It retrieves a list of preferred packages.. I don't exactly know what preferred packages means or somehow how to retrieve them... I tried to put a package name in the method "removePackageFromPreferred (com.dev5.fivegame)" but it gives an error...

Android : Want Sharing Code Between Applications

Jul 24, 2010

I want to create a "main" service/application which will provide different functionalities to other applications. According to android docs I can use elements from an application/ service in other. "A central feature of Android is that one application can make use of elements of other applications (provided those applications permit it). ...". There is any examples/documentation on this direction? TicTacToeMain/TicTacToeLib example is not helping me because it seems "TicTacToeLib" will be embedded in final TicTacToeMain apk file. Also I want to ask if is possible to detect if "main" service/ application is missing (if is missing I want to tell user to install it, or to install it automatically).

Android : Reuse App's Activities?

What's the proper way for other people to reuse my Activities? Should they hard code the intent actions in their app or is it customary to provide them with a jar file enumerating my app's intent actions? Is there a less tightly-coupled way to lookup the intent actions?

Android :: Sharing Code Between Applications As In Eclipse

Aug 26, 2010

I have ten, possibly more, apps I'm developing that all share logic. 50-75% of the logic is the same - perfect for some time of library or code sharing. However, after reading the posts here and trying to share code in Eclipse, I'm not sure that's going to work. I tried going to project -> properties -> build path -> link source and adding the src and gen folders of the project with the shared code and then importing the classes I need. That seems to work in the IDE, but gives an error during runtime: class not found. This seems to be a common error for people attempting this.

I am slowly deciding that shared code is not the best approach in this scenario. Android doesn't seem to work well with this type of code sharing. For one thing resources are not packed in libraries, but references (R.whatever) must exist so as not to create errors. This can be designed around, but the effort and headache is probably worse than simply creating multiple copies. My experience seems typical, based on what I've read. Is it? Have you experienced success or failure with sharing code and/or custom libraries? Am I off-base in thinking that multiple code copies will be smoother sailing than fighting the shared code approach?

Android :: How To Reuse Activity On Top Of Stack

Jun 16, 2010

My app has a single entry activity called "Main". In "Main" I call one of three other activities A, B, or C (based on a preference) and then immediately exit/finish"Main" so that only A, B, or C are active.I also have a permanent notification in the notification bar that users can pull down (at any time) to conveniently restart my App (calls intent with "Main" component). The problem is that if my app is already running and users pull down the notification and restart, I get A or B or C running on top of the previous activity (also A, or B, or C). How can I avoid this (i.e. reuse the activity on top of the stack)?I've tried Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_* and nothing seems to work. I've tried launchModel in the Manifest and it also didn't seem to work.

Android :: Is There A Secure Pass Code System To Buy Applications

Nov 25, 2010

OK maybe I'm being paranoid and behind the rest of the world who has already done this: I'm afraid of adding my credit card to my Google Checkout account! My main concern being a super intelligent user of my Android phone who will buy a million apps (potentially!) - my 5 year old son

I used to have a credit card on my account - but that's expired
Knowing that the card had expired, I thought I would test out the buying of an app
I was surprised that it only took a few pages of my clicking yes to buy the app
(The purchase didn't go through - I got an email saying this because my credit card couldn't be charged)

Question: is there a secure pass code system to buy applications?
Like needing to input a code at the last step of buying
(I think this is how iPhone works - I say this not having owned one)

I don't think there is a secure pass system - I've played around with my phone loads and have never come across anything. BUT, EVEN if there was such a pass system: there's still something wrong!
I've bought my phone. Not made any changes. Just started using. I would imagine that's what everyone does - as opposed to buying and then customising and making secure (and maybe optimizing the use of energy so that it doesn't die within a few hours of use)

Buying an application: you can cancel within 24 hours (I think that's the time limit) Over the weekend, I let go of business life and only pick up on Monday - so if my son purchased and installed an application on Friday evening, I wouldn't find out until some time later - because I don't look at my phone OR my emails over the weekend! (+ Say if an application was purchased that I then managed to cancel - I then lose the right to buy again and trial with the right to cancel - a small point, but valid regardless I think)

Would be interested to hear what others say - maybe I'm missing something and maybe I'm using incorrectly.

Android :: Best Way To Reuse A Footer Menu In Droid?

May 28, 2010

I'm trying to implement a menu in the footer of an app, similar to i.e. the Engadget app. As I understand, getting a standard TabLayout to work in this way is not trivial (if at all possible?).

As I see quite a few apps using this interface paradigm, I would assume there is a clever way of doing it. Currently, I'm defining the layout by adding an include line at the end of every layout. This works fine as far as rendering is concerned, but I have to add the onClickListeners to each activity. can we define clickListener through XML?

To sum up my question: What is the best way to implement a shared footer navigation accross several Activities?

Android :: Access Views Inside Layout When I Reuse It Multiple Times?

Aug 6, 2010

I have read the Android UI trick 2 on Android developers, which tells people how to include a layout in another layout file multiple times, and give these included layouts different id. However, the sample here is overwriting the layout id, not the id of the views IN this layout. For example, if the workspace_screen.xml looks like this: And I include it three times in another layout file. Do I end up with three TextViews with id firstText, and another three with secondText? Isn't there an id collision? And how do I find the secondText TextView in the third included layout with findViewById? What should I input in the findViewById method?

Android :: Reuse Default Droid Contact Search In 3rd Party Application - Possible?

Jul 14, 2010

At the moment I am trying to evaluate if it is possible to reuse the android contact search in a 3rd party application.

I got the problem that I have to implement a contact list/picker including a filtering possibility for the contacts list. That means that the standard android picker opened by an intent does not help me. So I decided to implement the list/picker on my own which is not that difficult. But I need to be able to offer the android search dialog in my own implementation as well.

So is it possible to reuse the standard contact search mechanism in an own application? (the contact search available e.g. in the default contact list) Or do I have to implement this one on my own?

Android :: Download PaPi Games From Market - Applications Didn't Read IMEI Code

Mar 22, 2009

Is anybody download the PaPi games from market and played it?

I found when I played one of this series of PaPi game and I input my name, then all series PaPi games can read this name.

At beginning, I consider maybe the application saved some data which can be shared by other PaPi games, but when I "Factory data reset" and format the SD card, then I download these games and play them again, it's so crazy that these games can read my name which I inputed before all the same!!

next, I consider maybe the application read the only code of the phone (IMEI) to identify the phone, but I check the install information about all the PaPi games, I can't found any information about "READ PHONE STATE",so I think these applications didn't read the IMEI code. who can tell me how to achieve this function?!

Android :: Freeing DB Resources

Oct 18, 2010

I have an app with 2 Activities and an IntentService all which need to access the same SQLite Database table. What's an appropriate pattern to use?

Should I create a ContentProvider that manages access to the database, ie opening/closing, querying, updating etc. And have the 3 clients all access the DB via the ContentProvider?

Or is it OK for each client to access the DB directly? This is the approach I have now and it seems to be working, but I need to close my cursor and the DB after executing every statement or I start generating stacktraces in the log about unclosed DB resources. But closing the DB after each statement seems wasteful and I suspect that this approach will always be susceptible to the stacktraces because there is always the potential for collisions between either of the Activities and the IntentService.

I haven't been able to find any good resources that show DB usage in full. It always snippets that miss out the *obvious* piece such as when should the resources be closed etc.
