I snap a photo, and it gets placed onto an ImageView. When the user sees the page where the Image View is, and I turn the phone sideways where the orientation is horizontal, the app immediately returns to the app's main screen.

I've successfully implemented onRetainNonConfigurationInstance() for my main activity to save and restore certain critical components across screen orientation changes.
But it seems, my custom views are being re-created from scratch when the orientation changes. This makes sense, although in my case it's inconvenient because the custom view in question is an X/Y plot and the plotted points are stored in the custom view.
Is there a crafty way to implement something similar to onRetainNonConfigurationInstance() for a custom view, or do I need to just implement methods in the custom view which allow me to get and set its "state"?
My home screen has changed to where there are 4 buttons across the bottom of the screen. I cannot get my phone back to the way it worked originally , don't know why it changed either.

I'm loving the Android.I have to say that after 5 days of owning this device I'm only left scratching my head on one point the auto-orientation of the home screen.I've seen videos of rooted G1's running the hacked 1.5 firmware and the recently posted video of the Samsung i7500 with the 1.5 firmware all CLEARLY show that when the device is on home screen, the desktop (read home screen) auto-rotates depending on the orientation of the device. The Samsung video shows it working in ALL FOUR orientations!This doesn't happen on my Magic . Flip the orientation in an application? Works fine. Flip it back in an application? Works fine. I use a managed progress dialog to show the user that an operation is being carried out with the following code written in the onCreateDialog(int id) function.When the operation completes I call dismissDialog(PROGRESS_DIALOG). The problem is that if I rotate the phone while the progress dialog is displayed then when the operation completes the dismiss call has no effect and the progress remains showing. My activity use the same RelativeLayout as it's content view whatever the orientation is. In this RelativeLayout, there is a FrameLayout align to it's bottom, and a TextView above this FrameLayout, just like :

on android 1.5 device when orientation changed, the TextView lies in the wrong place, middle when portrait, bottom when landscape. on android 1.6 device It is ok.
How could I make it lies in the place where it should be on 1.5 device?
I searched for this but couldn't find a solution. Is there anyway to get the home screen and subsequent side screens to go into landscape mode? I've seen some other Android Phones/Tablets doing this and would like to be able to do so. Or does anyone know if this will be an option in the 2.1 update? I heard that the Droid used to do this, and then some update messed it up, but then saw it going into landscape mode on the video they posted today of the Droid running 2.1.

I am having a listview in my App which shows perfectly in Portrait mode. But when I change orientation to landscape, sometimes the width remains as that of Portrait mode. Even the scrollbar for the list comes at the center and remaining part of the screen remains blacked out. This happens only with the list view. Other views show perfectly. I have designed the layouts such that the Portrait layouts look feel proportionate in landscape mode. I want to avoid restarting the activity so I have not put the layouts in the landscape folder. I tried invalidating the listview in onConfigurationChanged() but of no use. When I navigate in the list in landscape mode, the width automatically gets adjusted.

But my problem is this (at this point my misunderstanding kicks in): whenever I rotate the device the onCreate(), onStart() etc. methods are called, causing my app to act as if it just started. Furthermore, I feel unable to implement an onSizeChanged(int w, int h, int oldw, int oldh) { ... } Listener.

Well, preventing an orientation change is easy. But what about doing it at run time.
Say, I have an activity which supports orientation change in normal situations. It has say three Edit Texts.
There's also a button, which when clicked would do some processing in a thread while showing a ProgressDialog which is not cancellable.
Ok, so till the user hits the Button, I want the activity to be able to adapt the orientation changes. I have two layouts files for each orientation with different layout schemes.
What I want is this. Once the user clicks on the button, and the ProgressDialog is showing, I don't want the activity now to be re- created again when the orientation changes. So, before showing the ProgressDialog, is there any way to tell the Activity not to handle Orientation change?
Also, once the process is complete, and the ProgressDialog is removed, I want the Activity again to be able to handle orientation changes.
I got a question about screen orientation in Android Home screen. The scenario is as following. A G-sensor detects the movement on the device. Then it rotates the screen. If the device is portrait mode, the system sets to landscape mode. With G-sensor, theres is a SensorService to detect that and do some things to reach the function. I want to know how to reach that? In onUpdate(), it will set up the pendingIntent with extras with stock symbol. After I hit button A, it goes to Quote activity that shows stock A. Then I hit the BACK button to the homescreen, Quote activity calls onDestroy() and when I hit button B, stock B will show properly. However, when i hit HOME button after it shows stock A, the Quote activity only calls onStop without calling onDestroy(), then as i hit button B, it will call onStart() and it shows the same instance that shows stock A.

Originally I thought adding a flag in the Intent should solve this problem. But I have tried
i.setFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_MULTIPLE_TASK or FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK or FLAG_ACTIVITY_NO_HISTORY), none of them makes any difference.
