Android :: Lock Phone Orientation In Android To Prevent Landscape Mode

Sep 4, 2010

Is this possible to do? Landscape mode distorts the background image, and therefore I would like to lock orientation to vertical on phones with accelerometers.

Sprint HTC Hero :: Home Screen Orientation To Go Into Landscape Mode?

Feb 19, 2010

I searched for this but couldn't find a solution. Is there anyway to get the home screen and subsequent side screens to go into landscape mode? I've seen some other Android Phones/Tablets doing this and would like to be able to do so. Or does anyone know if this will be an option in the 2.1 update? I heard that the Droid used to do this, and then some update messed it up, but then saw it going into landscape mode on the video they posted today of the Droid running 2.1.

Android :: Prevent Orientation Change At Runtime

Apr 15, 2010

Well, preventing an orientation change is easy. But what about doing it at run time.

Say, I have an activity which supports orientation change in normal situations. It has say three Edit Texts.

There's also a button, which when clicked would do some processing in a thread while showing a ProgressDialog which is not cancellable.

Ok, so till the user hits the Button, I want the activity to be able to adapt the orientation changes. I have two layouts files for each orientation with different layout schemes.

What I want is this. Once the user clicks on the button, and the ProgressDialog is showing, I don't want the activity now to be re- created again when the orientation changes. So, before showing the ProgressDialog, is there any way to tell the Activity not to handle Orientation change?

Also, once the process is complete, and the ProgressDialog is removed, I want the Activity again to be able to handle orientation changes.

General :: Prevent Phone Locking - Not Bypass Lock Screen?

Feb 25, 2012

I've tried so many app's over the last couple of days that claim to stop the screen from locking but they have all just bypassed the lock screen... Well, they've tried to anyway. These kind of work arounds don't actually stop my phone from locking in the first place though.

My phone is a W008+ iPhone clone with Android 2.3.3. When it's charging, the screen will time out and switch off; But it doesn't lock. So I can hit any key to bring the screen back on and as it wasn't locked in the first place, I'm taken straight back to where I was.

When not charging, I get the same behaviour for ~2 or 3 seconds... Any longer and it locks forcing me to use the power key and swipe the lock screen along with any other security measures I may have in place.What I'd like is to be able to set the 'lock' timeout in the way that I can set the 'screen' timeout.How far will I have to go to get this functionality?

Is there a setting I've missed? I'm very new to Android so there's lots I don't know yet.

Are there any app's that can really do this? Maybe this would need a root app?

Android :: Hierarchy Viewer In Landscape Orientation

Jul 13, 2009

Is there a trick to getting the Hierarchy Viewer to work in landscape orientation, or is it completely broken? In Pixel Perfect View it shows my screen sideways (i.e. in portrait aspect ratio), but when I click on the views in the explorer area it outlines the wrong areas of the screen. It looks like the outlining assumes the display is in landscape orientation, so it outlines where the views would be if it were oriented correctly. Obviously fixing the display would be the best solution, but barring that I'm OK tilting my head if only the outlining would agree with the display. Anyone know a way around this?

Android :: Portrait Vs Landscape Orientation Using Sensor

Dec 18, 2009

I'm trying to detect landscape vs portrait orientation with the following:

public void onSensorChanged(SensorEvent event) { float pitch = event.values[2];
if (pitch <= 45 && pitch >= -45) { // portrait }
else if (pitch < -45) { // landscape }
else if (pitch > 45) { // landscape } }

Anyone have something more robust? It works pretty well, except if the phone is in a landscape orientation and the user starts to 'flatten' it out, starts thinking it's in the portrait orientation again.

HTC Incredible :: Prevent Sleep During Call / Make Phone Lock Automatically (like An App)?

May 1, 2010

Usually the phone is awake, and when you lower it the phone lights up for numeric input (love that feature).

But after a minute or so it locks. You have to push power button before you can enter numbers- annoying. Is there a "keep alive" option I'm not seeing?

On a similar note, is there a way to make the phone lock automatically (like an app)? It's also annoying to have to manually lock it: I'd rather keep waking it up (if it was indeed idle and not running a program) than forget to lock it and dial/message everyone in my contact list from my pocket.

Android :: Prevent Custom Views From Losing State Across Screen Orientation Changes

Aug 22, 2010

I've successfully implemented onRetainNonConfigurationInstance() for my main activity to save and restore certain critical components across screen orientation changes.

But it seems, my custom views are being re-created from scratch when the orientation changes. This makes sense, although in my case it's inconvenient because the custom view in question is an X/Y plot and the plotted points are stored in the custom view.

Is there a crafty way to implement something similar to onRetainNonConfigurationInstance() for a custom view, or do I need to just implement methods in the custom view which allow me to get and set its "state"?

Is it the correct behavior because the onConfigurationChanged should by called whenever we are changing the orientation. (android:configChanges="orientation")? I have also found one strange behavior or error, When we are changing from portrait to landscape orientation the string value is displayed correctly(automatically by android system) but when in am changing the orientation from landscape to portrait the same string is displayed(i.e the string in landscape mode).The expected behavior is the string id specified in the portrait mode should be displayed.Is it an platform bug or something wrong in my code/programming.
