Android :: No Phone Signal In Emulator 2.1 - Disable Network Connections
Apr 30, 2010
I only get a phone signal about a third of the times i start the emulator. I've read on these groups that you have to have an internet connection before starting the emulator. Since i'm connected to the internet 24/7 :) this is not the problem I've also read somewhere that you should try do disable all other network connections (which i've done) and the problem persists. I'm using Windows 7 and Android 2.1 + API's emulator. You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Android Developers" group. I have a Galaxy on O2 UK. It's via work, and on a business tariff that boasts unlimited data. After a couple of huge bills, it turns out that apparently 3g data is unlimited, but 2g data is charged at the usual eye-watering rates. Phone Bloke is checking with O2 whether they are serious. In the meatime, I'd like to disable 2g data connections.I can't find a way to do that.

I'm working on a Push Notifications library for Android (http://deaconproject.org/) that needs to take action if network connectivity is interrupted or changed - namely, it needs to re-initiate a server connection or pause its operation until network connectivity is available. This seems to work fine using and Android BroadcastReceiver for "android.net.ConnectivityManager.CONNECTIVITY_ACTION".
My problem is in testing the library - I would like to automatically test the library's response to a broken network connection, or a transition from 3G to WiFi, under various configuration conditions. The problem is, I don't want to sit with the emulator and hit F8 all day.
Is there a way to programmatically manipulate network connections on Android from within a jUnit test without resorting to toggling Airplane Mode? I've already tried issuing commands to the emulator via the console, manipulating the GSM mode, etc, but while the phone state changes on the display, the Internet connection remains up.

I have some code that uses a network connection. I create a connection by calling openConnection() on a URL object. Is there any documentation that explains how this process works? Which access point is being used? When that access point becomes invalid, will it automatically switch to another accespoint? etc. I would like to use only WiFi access points and otherwise fail even tho 3G or GPRS could be available, is that possible?

Are we able to establish both WiFi and 3G connections at the same time on Android 2.1? We are implementing a "make-before-break", so that WiFi can be switched to 3G before tearing the WiFi connection down. Please guide if you have come across this.

Last night my phone decided it wanted to be annoying and started turning itself on and off on its own. This has caused me to lose my network signal.
So far, I have turned the phone off (had it powered down all night while I slept).
Removed the sim card.
Used the recovery options to clear the cache.
Simulated a battery pull.
Thus far, nothing has worked.

I'm a new droid user and have tried desperately to disable all data connections.I'm without a data plan so I feel very unsafe just going on the net or using the apps I downloaded, afraid that it might accidentally use data connections.I've tried disabling the 2G network, data roaming, background data (what is it anyway) and even going to the key pad, typing *#*#4636#*#* to disable the data connection and data on boot up. I'm left with disabling the APN but don't know how to. And the thing that worries me is that I am unable to go to the Android Market because I will need to enable the background data which I'm afraid that will cause $. And also, I don't know if doing all that will be effective.

Has anyone taken a stab at accessing ad hoc connections with the BH2? I tried following this tutorial meant for the G1, but I couldn't install busybox, nor could I find the tiwlan.ini file.

Is there any way to retrieve the current cellular Signal Strength (RSSI) on Android 1.5?
I know there's a way to listen for signal strength updates through the TelephonyManager, but this seems to only give a "state," not a numeric value.
Is using the RSSI field on a neighboring cell fairly accurate? I'm guessing not, but I'm running out of ideas.

I recently got a New Quad-core Phone from China. it is a Dual Sim and comes with high profile specifications. But it does not get network signal on any Sim card. it claims to be unlocked. when I introduce a Sim it find my contacts, the phone recognizes it, but no network at all is found.
none if the Sim Slots gives signal (a micro and a normal Sim slot)
I double checked and my band is supported by the phone...

I was wondering if there is a way to manipulate the emulator to simulate telephony signal strength changes.
I would like to test code that uses TelephonyManager.listen() with LISTEN_SIGNAL_STRENGTHS.

A friend of mine is a member of the EVO Facebook group and sent me to a link which reads as follows:
"For those of you having battery issues I found a way to Dramatically improve the battery life.
First things first, go into Settings> About Phone> Battery> Battery Use> Cell Standby. Assuming your phone has been on, or off the charger for ~10 minutes, it should show Time Without Signal at around 50%. Next thing, press Home and bring up the dialer. Dial *#*#4636#*#* (Do not press "Call"). After a second, it should bring up the "Testing" menu.
Go into Phone Information, press MENU, and tap "select radio band." You should experience a Force Close, don't panic, this was supposed to happen. Scrolling down shows that the preferred network type is GSM auto (prl). What this means is that even though you are connected to a CDMA network, your phone is trying to find a GSM network, preventing the radio from sleeping, and causing excessive battery drain. Remedy this by tapping GSM auto (prl) and changing it to CDMA auto (prl).
Now your done, your TWS should drop dramatically, and you should experience much better battery life!
Note: You need to do this every time you reboot."
I've changed it on my phone just now and the service still works as normal. I guess we'll see if the battery life increases. If this works and with overclock widget I should be getting some crazy battery life now!

Like the title says, what is everyone's signal strength (settings/about phone/status) and have you been experiencing any mobile network issues at this level?
My signal hovers between -96 dBm and -101 dBm and have had network problems beyond belief. Moto droid sitting directly beside my fascinate typically is ten points better at -86 dBm through -91 dBm with zero network problems.

I've read many postings about problems getting the Android emulator DNS to work properly in certain situations. I have a simple app that makes an HTTP connection to a server on the Internet. If I use an IP address using the latest version of the emulator it works fine. If I use the domain name it throws a java.net.UnknownHostException: Host is unresolved: exception. The identical code works fine on any actual device. Has anyone figured out how to fix this situation? I've spent days trying everything, from using proxy servers to setting up and running a DNS server on my development machine. This situation/experience is a shame, because the emulator seems like such an impressive and well thought out collection of tools for developing and testing apps. However, it is currently useless to me. Is there anyone who can help? A prior thread on the same issue-appears to be the same situation: http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/threa...

According to the emulator docs, you should be able to enable/disable networking with the F8 key. I doesn't work for me and I'm trying to determine why.
I'm developing on OSX Leopard. I've also tried in a virtual Windows instance (Windows 2008 server running in Parallels). No luck in either case.
I've tried the obvious stuff like fn + F8, etc.
Should there be any sort of visual cue that networking has gone online or offline when F8 is pressed?

I've ported a Hero ROM to a HTC Magic. Here's my problem:
Problem: There's a great battery drain when you're connected to the network (no data but just mobile network for calls/SMS)
Ported ROM: Sandwich Deluxe 4.0 .
Original ROM: Hero ROM
Kernel: carz-2.6.34.4 (fast and stable)
The mobile network drains battery.I'm not in a low signal-area. Everybody who uses the ROM has a drain.I'm using a 2.x.x instead of a 3.0 kernel for an ICS ROM, can it be that this mismatch creates the drain? The phone displays a singal strength of 0dBm 97 asu. (Not normal?)
What doesn't cause the problem? In airplane mode there is no drain at all. So it is unlikely that some apps causes the drain.Wifi, GPS, sync, ... are all disabled.
What do you expect from xdamembers?
- Confirmation if the kernel is the issue of the drain. If not, I would like to know which files (in ROM) are responsible for network signal.
