I am looking for pointers on Androids capability to manage its home screen. for example I need to put my own application links programatically in a particular design/UI and manage it. Something similar to the Nokia E71 home screen interface capabilities.

This Soft Keyboard Covers Data Fields - and can't See what's going on.
I want to use this soft keypad and at the same time it should not become a problem to use data fields.
So how can I manage the data fields in such cases?
As far as I understand, Android and the Galaxy touch screen is not meant to be calibrated; at least, there does not seem to be a user interface for doing so (this is also true of the tilt and compass sensors, and yet various apps include their own calibration methods.)
The trouble is that I frequently --perhaps 40% of the time-- hit the key to the right of the one I meant to type. That is, I get an "M" instead of an "N", a "Z" when I intended to shift into uppercase, and so on. One might argue that I just need to get used to this teensy keyboard, but I might argue that a good user interface should get used to me. Is there anything that can be done?
I am looking for a app to manage screen orientation in any app? For example i want to have landscape for all app and only for Messaging and... portrait mode.

This problem does not happen if I exit an app by pressing the back button. It becomes very annoying at times.
I am designing a home screen widget. I ran this widget on a HTC Hero device, which has a screen of 320 pixels * 480 pixels with mdpi. It ran perfect on HTC Hero. The widget takes 3 cells * 2 cells space, i.e. 240 pixels * 200 pixels.Then I ran this widget on a Nexus One device, which has a screen of 480 pixels * 800 pixels, mdpi. Since Nexus One also is mdpi, so I though 240dip is equivalent to 240 pixels on Nexus One and 200dip is equivalent to 200 pixels on Nexus One, so the widget will not take 3 cells * 2 cells space on Nexus One device. To my surprise, when running on Nexus One device, the widget take exact 3 cells * 2 cells, about 360 pixels * 300 pixels, on Nexus One device.I am confused. The layout xml above specifies 240dip in width and 200dip in height for the widget, but why did it take 360 pixels * 300 pixels on Nexus One Device? What am I missing?
View 2 Replies View RelatedTwo things I'd like to be able to do with my incredible.First is reduce the number of homescreens. Seven is really pointless for me, it makes finding the right screen take a little longer and there's just not enough good quality widgets that I need to use. I could do better with 5 and possibly just 3.Second is that when I'm not on a homescreen and I hit the home button, I'd like it to go back to the LAST homescreen I was on, not the center one. And if I'm already on a homescreen, once again pull up the homescreen select menu, instead of going to the center homescreen. It's a waste of a button press to always go to that center screen when pressing the home button.

I think these are for baseline HVGA screen. This only happens when running certain apps, specifically Facebook and jetflicks (and some others that I can't name off the top of my head) but when I press the home button it goes to the last screen of my home setup. I run stock froyo and sense, and I keep up with as many updates as possible. Is there a patch for this that anyone knows of?

Does anyone know of any good resources which describe the features/implementation of WebKit on Android? At first glance, it appears it doesn't support HTML5, nor certain -webkit CSS3 extensions like gradients or transitions. Does support certain other WebKit features like opacity, etc.
Most of my searches are coming up futile, because I end up seeing generic info about Android having WebKit, or technical pieces specific to embedding WebKit in native apps — but no good documentation on general WebKit features available. So through a weird assortment of events i managed to crack the screen on my Eris. But this is the trippy part, I didnt break the glass but the touch sensors underneath. So now i am unable to use the menu or home buttons and the entire left part of my screen and more. I am unable to unlock my device in anyway that i know(menu button, the slider). Is there any other way to unlock it? I now have 11 unread texts and 4 voicemails that I desperately want to view. Oh and I know some of you won't be happy about what I'm about to say but.... I took the leap to the moto droid. I had the chance to get it on a 1 year because I didnt get insurance and I went for it. I will really miss my Eris but the keyboard lag was just killing me.

This gets really annoying when using apps that require such actions. Anyone else having this issue or know what I'm doing wrong. Maybe an app that's causing it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThere are return values and such that allow handling if SensorManager sensors and location providers aren't available, but what about the camera and microphone for audio recording? Is there a way to detect those in software, or are we just to assume that every device running Android (even the rumored set-top box) is going to have a camera and microphone and try to use them?
In the case of the camera, it would seem that Camera.open() returning null would indicate the lack of hardware. I don't know if that assumption is valid or not, though, considering it isn't documented as such.
In the case of the microphone, though, I don't see anything that could possibly be checked. The same goes for the camera if you're wanting to do video with the MediaRecorder class.
