Android :: Looking For App To Turn Off And On Sync
Oct 23, 2010
I'm looking for an app that basically allows all automatic data transfer to be stopped unless asked for while off of WiFi, and then for it to be wide open when WiFi is available. A switch preferably.

I have finally gotten my BT connectivity issue resolved but have a new problem. I am using the Kenwood KCA-BT300 and as soon as it connects to the EVO, it starts to download the phone book. My phone book has about 900 contacts, so it's taking FOREVER. While it's downloading the book, I am not able to make calls from the stereo unless I start the call from the EVO. I would like to EVO to STOP sharing the phonebook via BT...is that possible and if so how? And out of curiosity, has anyone else had any issues like this and the Kenwood BT unit?

I'm planning on getting the Sprint Hero. I have a hosted Exchange account that I use to manage my emails, calendar, contacts, and tasks. I'm planning on continuing using my Exchange account. I do not want to use Google for Calendar, Contacts, and Tasks syncing.
I have the following questions.
1. How do I turn off Google calendar, contacts, and tasks syncing?
2. Do I need to turn off Google syncing?
3. Is Exchange data stored and managed separately on the phone from Google's calendar, contracts, and tasks but displayed together in the HTC applications?
4. Will the HTC implantation of Exchange ActiveSync allow me to sync tasks?

How do I turn on Exchange calendar sync? I can't find the option. I have my Exchange email setup and everything is working fine. When I set it up I told it not to sync my contacts and calendar because I usually sync my work calendar with Google Calendar Sync. However, I am now using Office 2010 Beta at work and Google Calendar Sync does not support it.

I recently got the droid x and relinquished my blackberry curve.I love this phone but I have one major problem.I am a psychologist, and use my X to schedule all of my appointments, and keep track of my clients.Because of legal issues and client privacy laws, I need to keep my phone from syncing my Google calendar to the internet.I can't have that information out there.I use Gmail for all of my email and contacts and such, but every time I turn off Google sync on my phone it syncs again the next day.I don't want to just kill all syncing, or I won't get my email anymore. Any ideas? I am also up for finding an "offline" calendar that has the same principals of Google calendar, but has no syncing ability.

I have a Verizon brand car charger but have never had the need to use it until this weekend when I traveled from NJ to VT for skiing. I had the navigation and pandora going the entire trip with the charger pluged in. However when I got there and unplugged the battery was almost completely dead.
Does the car charger not supply enough power to charge and run the droid with all the data and gps usage going?
Also the area where I was staying had very poor coverage and once the droid was charged it lost its charge very quickly. should I turn off sync in areas of poor coverage?

I finally got my work email sync'd on my Android phone (Outlook). However, all my annoying meetings from work are now popping up as "notifications" in my phone's status bar. I can't stand corporate meetings, which are a colossal waster of time, and i don't want to be reminded of all the meetings on my work schedule. I was able to successfully turn of the Outlook mail notifications on my phone (and I still get Gmail notifications, since they are two separate email systems, which is exactly what I want). How do I turn my "Outlook calendar reminders," but still be reminded of my Google Calendar reminders, which is my personal, and far more important, calendar?

I have been reading up on the concept of push email, and how it's supposed to be a huge battery saver (since in theory, the phone would only receive a notification of an e-mail, and not the actual e-mail itself). I have also been reading up on how the "Gmail" app's version of Push email is not the same as other Push e-mail software, in that it requires the phone to "Sync" whenever an e-mail hits the Gmail server. As a result, whenever I would try to turn Auto Sync off (supposedly to save battery), I would no longer be able to get my e-mail notifications in real time.
With this in mind, I attempted to find another application that would enable me to use Push email for my Gmail account, without having to "Sync" with Gmail's server. After messing around for a bit, I found that I could manually input my Gmail account info (Incoming Server, Outgoing Server, Username, Pass, Etc.) into the stock "Email" app that comes with the X. Once this was done, I was able to enable "Data Push" in the "Email" app's Settings menu (as well turning off any Polling intervals). By doing this, I was able to receive new Gmail notifications through the "E-mail" app, even when Auto Sync had been turned off. As a bonus, I received them around 15 seconds faster than I did with the "Gmail" app's version of Push.....

I am trying to pass location data from my application to the Google Navigation API (No, not the browser). I can pass data to the dialer, and call a phone number successfully, but now wish to use the turn-by-turn navigation as an additional function. I have searched tirelessly through Android documentation, Google Maps API Documentation, and the web without luck. Can anyone point me in the right direction or hint how I can pass the service my data?

Dear Android community, i've a license/legal question regarding asking Google directions to be drawn directly into the MapView. Some of you know that asking google http://maps.google.com/maps/nav will give directions in Json + a Polyline encoded form. What i would like to know is, where is the Terms of Service regarding this functionality? It is for Google internal use or not? There's also the KML which gives similar informations. Please note that it is NOT for real time driving directions but a path to be drawn from a point to another and your position NOT refreshed in real time and of course it is for an app downloadable free of charge.

Frustrating - but apparently the capability is I can customize a route online with Google Maps, save it to my maps and send it to the phone but it sends the static map.Ridiculously, all this power and I can't take those directions from the PC and turn them into turn by turn directions on the phone.

I would really like to incorporate turn-by-turn directions to our application, but it appears to be against the TOS. Is there any way to get permission from Google to allow this for our application? I have what looks like one other app allow this interface.

I don't know about anyone else, but I HATE the turn-by-turn directions voice in Google Navigation. I have a Moto Droid and the voice is practically unintelligible. As a die-hard Google devotee,I have faith that they will correct the problem if enough people tell them to. Surprisingly, I was not able to find this suggestion on their product suggestion forum, so I created one.

I've had my Droid for about a month and the Google Voice turn by turn naviagation has worked beautifully. Today, when I went to use it, I'm receiving directions...BUT I do not get turn by turn voice directions. The view of the map is from like an airplane, not the "over the shoulder" view like I used to get, and the voice part is totally gone (I've checked the volume and it's not that).I've tried powering the phone down/up, but doesn't help. I've called Verizon but they've told me they don't support this App.

We'll this is a deal breaker for me, after being pretty happy with the RUU update and the speed improvement it brought to the stock music player. When using the turn by turn navigation, every time the voice comes in the player puts itself on pause. After the instruction is over it remains paused instead of resuming. Then I have to manually hit play again to resume playback. This is a big deal while driving since I don't want to be fidgeting with my phone every couple seconds. This was not an issue with 2.1 , since as soon as the turn by turn instruction was gone the music would automatically resume.

Is anything known about how an app may tap turn-by-turn directions generated by Android 2.0's Google Maps Navigation? Until now we were prohibited by the Google Maps ToS to offer turn-by-turn directions in our apps. Clearly it would be attractive to integrate some of that functionality in other mobile applications, or to be able to exert some level of control over Google Maps Navigation from one's app. In other words, are there any supplementary APIs for use with Google Maps Navigation?Or does Google Maps Navigation run as a Service such that at least one need not switch between applications to still get spoken turn-by-turn directions even while one's app Activity is running in the foreground?

I'm new to Android and I'm deciding on which phone to get. I believe I want the Fascinate but this issue with Google Maps navigation is an issue since turn-by-turn navigation is a big feature for me. Does Bing Maps also offer turn-by-turn navigation as well? Is it voice assisted? Personally I don't care if it's Bing or Google but I don't want the Verizon one since it will require a monthly fee. As long as Bing Maps offers the same functionality as Google Maps, I'm fine.

So I use the task killer...and at the moment say when I kill tasks it'll tell me there is about 200M avaliable memory free...if I use the phone for a day it'll maybe go down to 150M even if I am still killing apps and there is nothing in 'running services'. If i turn off the phone and turn it back on it goes up to 250M. What is running that I can't stop myself to make it go down from the 250M but that I can just eliminate by turning off the phone?
