Is there a standard native Android content provider that will return data listing all of the apps currently installed on the cellphone. Something like open()/readdir() on a Linux bin directory.
Given that you know an app is installed on an Android cellphone, and you know that apps name, how do you launch that app from a completely different and unrelated app. You might not know which Intents/Broadcasts/URIs the app you want to launch is listening for. And not all Android apps are written to respond to Intent/URI broadcasts or requests.

I'm making an Android Java app game (although this question applies to all languages really) and hope to release the first version soon. I'm nervous about how I save data in my game. My problem is that, if in a later update, I decide to store more data or store the same data in a different way, I need to be careful I don't lose or corrupt data for users that upgrade (i.e. I want users to be able to use data created by an old version in the new version, like their high scores from before). For example, say I want to save high scores in version 1.

I am working on an application and one feature that would make it really useful is the ability to share some information, but the other device may not be expecting the data to be sent. For example, if I am reading a really good book, and I realize that a friend may like it, I could use an application to send the data to him, so he could order the book from Amazon. But, since he isn't expecting the data, I would hate for the application to be polling a server every so often, as that will be needlessly draining the battery.Ideally it would be great if there was a way to make a phone call to the target device, send a data packet and end the call.If it could be done and prevent the phone from ringing, then it would be very useful to me.I am curious if there is some way to send data between devices without polling.

I am trying to write a streaming application.I have my own decoder and I am playing PCM audio using AudioTrack. At any point in time I want to know how much data is buffered with the device. I want to use this so that if the data with the device go below a level, I want to go into a buffering mode where I will buffer 2-3 seconds of data before continuing playback again. Can someone please tell me how to do this?

I'm writing an application wherein users will sometimes make orders through it. I want to give users the option to save their billing info (name, address, etc.) so that it can be quickly restored later if they want to make another order. The user will enter a password to secure the data. Obviously I can't just put this as a file on the device, as anyone can root/find the data. Is there a built-in Android method for storing secure data that is locked with a password? If not, what is a good place to start for storing this data securely using Java?

I'm looking for some input on how to go about a problem I have. We have a device that has binary data that it needs to send out (they are mainly just symbols, but in a custom binary format) over ethernet. I need to intercept this data on the phone and display the symbols over google maps. I'm just wondering the best way to go about this, I have a few ideas but am not sure if they are possible or feasable: 1. Is it possible for the phone to connect directly to the device if the device had some sort of server running on it, then poll for new data? If so, what is the protocol needed to be able to direct connect like that? 2. Perhaps modify the device software to send data to the phone(s) in SMS data message format? Im not sure if it is possible for software to "spoof" an SMS to a phone when it is not a phone itself? 3. Have the device software upload all its binary data to a ftp/http server that is sitting out there somewhere, have the phone(s) connect to that server and poll for new data periodically? I'm brand new to android development, basically all I want to do is grab this binary data from the device on my phone and parse/display it over google maps. How do any of those ideas sound, or is there a much easier way I am overlooking?

I've been trying to understand how to get data about all the audio files in the device using MediaAudio but unfortunately the documentation is far from clear. Also, thereīs almost nothing about it on the forum right now and I couldnīt find good resources over the internet.
Iīve seen pretty quick and objective examples on how to access the main information from the containers but I couldnīt find in any place how I could get the names of the tracks (MediaStore.Audio.AudioColumns doesnīt have an specific constant for it) and the most important, how I could retrieve the path for the media (audio file in this case) Iīve found using the info on MusicStore.Audio.
am I missing something here? It seems it should be so easy but I canīt find the info! Also if I change any data on the container, will this data be also changed in the real file as well?

Am a MMX A110 user, the phone is really great apart from occasional hanging. yesterday, it got hang when I tried to open the gallery, then I had no other option other than to remove the battery and turn on. When I turned it on, I was caught by surprise ,the apps which were moved to SD card where missing and the app list in settings shows some damaged icon then I rushed to gallery to find out wats happening. All my 300 photos were lost. Except my contacts and messages everything were corrupted. Though I recovered most of the lost stuff. I still lost many important memories. Later, I formatted my memory card to solve this issue.
1)a backup app which can function without internet connection and can synchronize it with my computer
2)Security app something like an antivirus.

My app needs to send some data to a server when the device is connected. I have been reading about native Android Broadcast actions. I was willing to find a way to use one as gmail does when the device connects to the Internet. (The "loading" icon on the top while it syncs mails) Is it ACTION_SYNC what I am looking for? If not, how does gmail knows when the device connects to internet?

So I have downloaded a game called trainz, which requires me to download 300+ MB data. I have a samsung galaxy young s6312. I have downloaded the game with the data on this mobile. Recently I got a note 2. I want to play this game on my note 2. But i don't want to download the data all over again. Is there a solution by which I can copy the data folder from my old device to my new one?
I already tried copying the com.nv3games.trainz folder (size 318 mb) from my old device to the obb folder of my new device, which didn't work. I also tried copying it to the data folder of my new device, which also didn't work. The Game was still asking me to download the data. Both devices are rooted, so any solution which requires root will be ok.

How I'm able to do what I've written in the topic. I've looked through many tutorials on AsyncTask but I can't get it to work. I have a little form (EditText) that will take what the user inputs there and make it to a url query for the application to lookup and then display the results.
What I think would seem to work is something like this: In my main activity i have a string called responseBody. Then the user clicks on the search button it will go to my search function and from there call the GrabUrl method with the url which will start the asyncdata and when that process is finished the onPostExecute method will use the function activity.this.setResponseBody(content).
This is what my code looks like simpliefied with the most important parts (I think).

For my CS bachelors I am doing a Senior project using android and google maps.My vision was to do a (relatively) simple Dijkstra shortest path using google maps road data. I was going to add elevation change along with 2D distance. I am doing well playing with maps in android but I am completely stumped trying to access google maps data in any sort of searchable form. How would I go about accessing the data for say intersections of roads (lat/long) in a particular area? There has to be a way to pull that data in some sort of tree form. It seems like it may be possible with kml?Any pointers would be awesome.I want my paths to follow roads but If i cant this is going to turn into an orienteering application fairly fast.

to start with I've gone through the entire notepad tutorial, I'm a professional game programmer who has some extra time. (though most of my time has been in C++, I did take a year or two of Java classes in college, and remember some of it). I'm not sure the site is a good site to ask questions like this.. If someone has a Forum that might be a good place to ask these newbie questions, please feel free to point me in the direction. I've examined a few of the samples, and think I've a grasp of what I want to do. I've a three to four project plan for some Android releases to sharpen my skills, but since this is my first project and I have never really developed for a mobile phone or the android before, I'd like to make sure I have a solid plan. The first project is an example of the license plate game, however I want to do a few things to change it. Heck maybe when I'm done it'll become a bingo style game, with bluetooth connectivity, you never know. The base idea is I want to offer a list of states, with checkboxes next to them. so to do this, I'll be starting with a Linear List layout similar to the note pad example, and then have a row that is only a Checkbox. I can use text and call strike through if it's been checked off. Perhaps offer an option to not show them if they are checked.
But I want the list to be generated from a set of lists. Maybe all of America's states, maybe reasonable American states (no Hawaii, no Alaska) maybe a North American list, (add in Mexico and some Canadian provinces), a European list, who knows. I'd probably have to have a pop up window that lists all of the lists I suppose using a radiogroup of some sort. So then as far as the data, after weighing options I think best solution is to make a database with two fields, "checked" and "name".I figure I can use the menu for most of the user interaction (aside from clicking on stuff we want to check off) with maybe a few context menu items, I understand how to make all of those already so I should be good. The question I have is what is the best way to populate the lists? Should I create raw data, and have different files for all the lists? Or is there some other way to do this? I've seen this done on the searchable dictionary, but I'd like to hear what people who have actually generated the data like this before. In addition is there an easy way to look at the sql database these applications create, or do you have to run searches on them and output the data? Finally any other suggestion or advice? I definitely want to try to get something like this on the market so I can see the full life cycle and see if anyone actually likes it. (luckily there's not a plethora of them already) but I also want a few people to look over my code if they're willing when I'm done to make sure I've done this right or at least not missing any basic mistakes.
