Android :: How To Pass Data To Another Droid Device/
May 24, 2010
I am working on an application and one feature that would make it really useful is the ability to share some information, but the other device may not be expecting the data to be sent.For example, if I am reading a really good book, and I realize that a friend may like it, I could use an application to send the data to him, so he could order the book from Amazon.But, since he isn't expecting the data, I would hate for the application to be polling a server every so often, as that will be needlessly draining the battery.Ideally it would be great if there was a way to make a phone call to the target device, send a data packet and end the call.If it could be done and prevent the phone from ringing, then it would be very useful to me.I am curious if there is some way to send data between devices without polling.

I would like to know if it is possible to pass a certain intent from one device to another? For example, device A is viewing a certain webpage, then I want that link to be sent to device B, and automatically launch that intent to device B. But without using the C2DM feature.

I've already developed some basic application successfully that I tested on Android SDK. I want to know what are the files or file that I have to export to the mobile device(sony xperia x10 mini android) , what extension, how to install, etc etc. I want to check the application in he mobile device. I've been reading the developer manual but I don't find exactly what I'm looking for.

The main activity includes some variables with set values. I created a sub-activity with the form which has to be filled with the data from main activity so I guess the data have to be passed to the sub-activity when it starts. how to pass the variable values to the sub-activity from the main activity?

I'm developing an app which basically navigates through a xml-feed. When I parse the feed or let's say the list, then each (list)item becomes a model. All the models are wrapped up in an array list. Now, when the user clicks on a list item, the underlying model is going to be serialized and sent as IntentExtra to the next Activity (e.g. a deeper sub list). (Originally I asked here a different question. The solution was not related to Serializable and wouldn't help anybody. However MatteKarla gave an interesting input. Thats why I decided to rewrite this question.)

In my Android app,I start a new activity with startActivityForResult(). I get the result in onActivityResult() perfectly. My problem is that there is a small bit of data that I know before I start the activity and I need that value to be available in onActivityResult(), too. I tried attaching it to my intent as an extra, but it wasn't attached to the intent that is available when the activity returns the result. I made it work by storing the data in a global variable, but I really don't like that approach. Is there a better, right way to pass data through an activity (instead of just to it)?

I am stuck - or perhaps I am trying to do something that can't be done.I would like to send an intent to the NotificationManager with data so that if it is clicked, the Activity that is called will do something with that data.I have tried a variety of things, the Activity does get called but no sign of data (and I am frankly a little unclear as to where to retrieve it).If someone out there can either suggest something or tell me I am headed down a dead end I would be grateful.

I am want to pass data back from a Thread to Activity (which created the thread). So I am doing like described on Android documentation.Only one thing I am missing here - where and how should be defined mResults so I could access it from both Activity and Thread, and also would be able to modify as needed? If I define it as final in MyActivity, I can't change it anymore in Thread - as it is shown in example.

I wounder if there is some possible to know from which parent Iam coming from in the child so I can do different stuff depending on who the parent is of the activity.This is how Iam going over to the child. But I don't know how to handle this in the child to check who is the parent. The above code is used on one of the parents,, is there somehow I can use "EQ_CODE_SELECT_LOCATION"? Also I wounder how is possible to send data to a child activity?

From one activity, I want to pass a lot of data (about 1MB of Strings).I tried sticking it in Intent.putExtra(ArrayList<String>), but if I put in too much data, I get "FAILED BINDER TRANSACTION".What's the easiest way? I don't want to publish a service, or use the file system. I really want a pipe that can write data from one end and read it from the other end. I can handle the case where the starter Activity dies while the "startee" activity is trying to read from the pipe.

I've got an Android application which needs to be woken up sporadically throughout the day.To do this, I'm using the AlarmManager to set up a PendingIntent and have this trigger a BroadcastReceiver. This BroadcastReceiver then starts an Activity to bring the UI to the foreground.All of the above seems to work, in that the Activity launches itself correctly; but I'd like the BroadcastReceiver to notify the Activity that it was started by the alarm (as opposed to being started by the user). To do this I'm trying, from the onReceive() method of the BroadcastReceiver to set a variable in the extras bundle of the intent,Can anyone tell me what's different about passing a bundle from a BroadcastReceiver to an Activity, as opposed to passing the bundle from an Activity to a BroadcastReceiver?

In my application i want to pass the camera data to native layer. what is the best possible approach for doing the same.
I know it can be done 2 ways.
1.start the camera in application and pass the preview data to native layer. But i feel this may consume lot of resources.
2.Start the camera directly in native layer and use it. So JNI will come less into picture. and not much resource loading also.But dont want to take any risk by using the lower layer code which may change in future.
Is there any other approach ? start the camera and tap the data in native layer. I think this wont be proper approach, Can any one suggest ?

I am trying to pass a custom object to one activity from another. What I would like to use is the HashMap of WeakReferences, but the description isn't clear, at least to me. From above URL: "A HashMap of WeakReferences to Objects. You can also use a HashMap of WeakReferences to Objects with Long keys. When an activity wants to pass an object to another activity, it simply puts the object in the map and sends the key (which is a unique Long based on a counter or time stamp) to the recipient activity via intent extras. The recipient activity retrieves the object using this key."
MyObject object = new MyObject(); HashMap map = new HashMap(); WeakReference reference = new WeakReference(object); map.put(reference.hashCode(), reference);
Intent i = new Intent(myIntent); i.putExtra(map);
I know this is probably way off but I can't figure out how this is intended to be implemented based on the description. Are the keys hashcodes, user defined, or what? It sounds like all that is passed is a HashMap containing the key values but how is the object retrieved with just the key? I couldn't find any code examples or useful documentation on this method of passing objects

I am pretty new to this but I was told I could get good help here. A friend and myself are playing around with creating Android apps (using ADT)
Here is how we are trying to make the program: in activity, user sets threshold values for the X and Y axis on accelerometer. When user hits button "Start", startService is invoked and starts TiltService.
TiltService is designed to run in the background always on the phone without user interaction. TiltService constantly compares the threshold with the accelerometer values and will vibrate if they are off.
My problem is I can't seem to get the putExtra() data correctly. I have overridden the onStartCommand in my service but I get the message "unreachable code" when I save the getExtras() to a bundle.
Here is the relevant code (I can post the whole thing, just do not want to clog up page) code...
I thought I understood the basic of how Intents could pass data, but I guess I don't. Is it obvious what I am missing?

The object passing between an Android service and the remote binder is happening through serialization of the object. If the service needs to return a very large collection, it seems very inefficient to use this. What is the recommended way to deal with this?

I'm looking for some input on how to go about a problem I have. We have a device that has binary data that it needs to send out (they are mainly just symbols, but in a custom binary format) over ethernet. I need to intercept this data on the phone and display the symbols over google maps. I'm just wondering the best way to go about this, I have a few ideas but am not sure if they are possible or feasable: 1. Is it possible for the phone to connect directly to the device if the device had some sort of server running on it, then poll for new data? If so, what is the protocol needed to be able to direct connect like that? 2. Perhaps modify the device software to send data to the phone(s) in SMS data message format? Im not sure if it is possible for software to "spoof" an SMS to a phone when it is not a phone itself? 3. Have the device software upload all its binary data to a ftp/http server that is sitting out there somewhere, have the phone(s) connect to that server and poll for new data periodically? I'm brand new to android development, basically all I want to do is grab this binary data from the device on my phone and parse/display it over google maps. How do any of those ideas sound, or is there a much easier way I am overlooking?
