Android : How To Get Data About All Audio Files In Device Using MediaAudio
May 4, 2010
I've been trying to understand how to get data about all the audio files in the device using MediaAudio but unfortunately the documentation is far from clear. Also, thereīs almost nothing about it on the forum right now and I couldnīt find good resources over the internet.
Iīve seen pretty quick and objective examples on how to access the main information from the containers but I couldnīt find in any place how I could get the names of the tracks (MediaStore.Audio.AudioColumns doesnīt have an specific constant for it) and the most important, how I could retrieve the path for the media (audio file in this case) Iīve found using the info on MusicStore.Audio.
am I missing something here? It seems it should be so easy but I canīt find the info! Also if I change any data on the container, will this data be also changed in the real file as well?

I am trying to write a streaming application.I have my own decoder and I am playing PCM audio using AudioTrack. At any point in time I want to know how much data is buffered with the device. I want to use this so that if the data with the device go below a level, I want to go into a buffering mode where I will buffer 2-3 seconds of data before continuing playback again. Can someone please tell me how to do this?

Is there a way to determine the audio format of an audio file in Android? On normal java I do it like this:
File file= new File(...);
AudioInputStream stream = AudioSystem.getAudioInputStream(file);
AudioFormat format= stream.getFormat();

I try to create 'foo/bar.txt' in Android's /data/data/pkg/files directory.
It seems to be a contradiction in docs:
To write to a file, call Context.openFileOutput() with the name and path.
http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/data/data-storage.html#files
The name of the file to open; can not contain path separators.
[url]
And when I call
this.openFileOutput("foo/bar.txt", Context.MODE_PRIVATE);
exception is thrown:
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: File foo/bar.txt contains a path separator
So how do I create file in subfolder?

Can anybody advice what is the recommended directory to store files generated by your application: audio files, video files or some images.
If the phone contains SD card, it is clear that files should be saved there, but if there is no any external storage. where would you recommend to save to?

I am streaming an MP3 audio and instead making this MP3 audio to play, I want it to be converted to PCM format and pass this PCM audio to AudioTrack(as it takes PCM data as input.) instead of passing my MP3 stream to MediaPlayer. Can anyone please help me to convert the MP3 to PCM stream?

I am trying to overlay route data in KML files on a MapView.
The following code works great:
CODE:................
The only problem I have with this is that I don't need to re download these KML files every time. I have about 10-15 KML files that will rarely change. Also since it has to connect, download, and parse these each time there is a delay in opening the maps.
It would make a lot more since for me to save these as a local resource and have the URI reference it there. Is there a way to construct a URI using the geo: scheme and have it point towards a local resource?
It looks like file:///sdcard support was included in 2.1. The only reference I could find to it was at the end of this bug report thread. I am currently at work and don't have time to play with this yet but I would like to figure it out later. I feel like there are a lot of people on stackoverflow and elsewhere who would really appreciate a reasonable way to do this.

I've recorded audio in my Android application in its AMR format and I'd like to convert these to something that I can more easily use, such as WAV or MP3.
I've found some online instructions for this, for instance: http://www.aquarionics.com/2004/08/04/how_to_convert_amr_files_to_mp3/
which say to start with the 3GPP reference solutions to convert AMR to WAV, and then use sox and lame from there.
I compiled this code and tried to convert my AMR file, but it seg faults. I think this is because Android's AMR files are wrapped in a 3GP container. There is some code online about how to unwrap the AMR files (http://www.benmccann.com/dev-blog/extracting-amr-audio-from-android-3gp-files/), but I can't seem to get it to work and it seems like a lot of extra trouble just to get the audio from these files.

I have multiple audio files in the assets directory of my application. When the user clicks a button I want to play those files in a certain order, one after the other. There shouldn't be any noticeable lag between the audio files. What is the best approach to achieve this? I am thinking of using MediaPlayer objects and OnCompletionListeners. But, that would mean I have to create a lot of OnCompletionListeners because I need to know every time which audio file is next. Am I missing something or is there a better approach?

Let's suppose that we have the following scenario: something is playing on an android device (an mp3 par example, but it could be anything that use the audio part of an android device). From an application (android application :) ), I would like to intercept the audio stream to analyze it, to record it, etc. From this application (let's say "the analyzer") I don't want to start an mp3 or something, all I want is to have access to the audio stream of android. Any advice is appreciated, it could a Java or C++ solution.

I've created an application which uses around 15 small audio files. Right now I'm using mp3 files and each is around 200KB. These files are stored in my res/raw directory. I'm using SoundPool class to play the files in my application. I'm hoping to put this application on the android market place. Can one of you suggest what is the best way to store so many audio files? Will my application be scalable? Is wav or ogg format better approach instead of mp3? Please let me know.

Some audio files return 0 from MediaPlayer.getDuration(), even though they're perfectly valid files that play ok and that players on Windows can find the duration of. There seem to be two different cases here: certain file types such as .wma and .wav always return 0 duration, and others only do so sometimes. I haven't been able to find any pattern in the latter case, but it does seem consistent per file. The music player displays 0:00 duration for these, so it's not just my code.
