Android :: ListActivity Vs Activity What Are Advantages?
Aug 14, 2009
I was reading on ListActivity and Activity and wanted to know which is better? I only need to display one listview. Would I see great improvements? Does ListActivity handle screen rotation better or it's the same?

This post probably shows my ignorance of Android coding, but here goes. I have a sample app I am developing which starts by extending Activity. I have a main.XML layout which works great. On a button click from the main layout I'd like to load a ListView. I think I understand how to use ListView and seed data into it. I have created a new layout which contains this ListView. I am confused, however, how I switch from a regular Activity to a ListActivity so I get the convenience methods like setListAdapter()? Should I be starting with a ListView, and then drawing the other view on top once the app starts by inflating the layout and using it? If not, how do I create a ListActivity object inside my app, and where should I create that? If you have a sample application or tutorial that shows how to do this, I would appreciate it.

The only person i have found that solves the problems says that he solved changing manifest but he does not say nothing else. I i put the ListAvtivity as main activity in manifest app works ok buet if a set an Activity as main activity an then call ListActivity like:
Intent searchAct = new Intent(this, SearchResult.class); startActivity(searchAct);
then my app crashes. Des anybody know what happens?

What are the relative advantages of using 3G vs. Wi-Fi for transferring data? Which uses more batter power? Which is faster? I have access to Wi-Fi networks at home and at work. I'll take advantage of them if I understand the value of doing so.

It turns out that if you are synching Outlook with a server, not all servers can handle Adroid phones. I don't know if an app like Touchdown would fix this, so if you need to synch with a server, check this out. Because I wanted to go with AT&T anyway for tethering reasons (a fairly unique situation), I went with an Iphone and have been quite happy with it, though the jury is still out on the touch keypad. An advantage of the Iphone is that the world has adapted to it. My Ford Escape synch system will not recognize all phones, but does recognize the Iphone, given how popular it is. This also may be an issue for some people, not for others.

I have read through a nuber of posts but cannot seem to find an answer to this question:
Is there a way to disable the haptic feedback (vibration) from the HOME keys - I have successfully stoped this function for the touchpad.:
1. My phone will access YouTube but does not play all videos. It plays about 30 % of the ones I select - is this a phone problem? Is than an update?
2. I charge my phone each night, 11p to 7a and plug it in to the car charger for longer trips (use a bluetooth while driving) - am I killing my battery?
3. What will be the major advantages of an upgrade to Android 2.0 which I hear is rumored for the Eris in 1stQ 2010>
Love the phone...can't wait to try the GPS 'Where Am I' app on a local golf course (can it identify the bar also?)

I am currently running Evil Eris 3.0 and over clocked with setcpu and it seems to run pretty good. Recently, I have seen messages about Froyo and now an updated Evil Eris 4.0. Can anyone give me a quick run down on the advantages / disadvantages of each ROM? My primary needs are to have the device respond to phone calls quickly and to be able to tether to my laptop when WIFI is not available. However, I do like all the other cool features like sense.

I root all my phones for various reasons, and have flashed ROM's before on the original Droid. On that device there were clear reasons to flash ROM's and since the community was ginormous, there was lots of information about the stability of various ROM's. So I'm new to the DroidX and wondering if there are any stable ROM's out that might be worth loading up (for fun and for performance boosts - not necessarily speed). I use my phone as a primary phone for work and home, so it has to be stable.

Now that it looks like the 2.2 SBF is online, how many people who are running leaks are going to upgrade to the 2.2 OTA that supposedly include an updated bootloader/kernel/radio? For those who did already, do you see any differences at all? Moto made some claims that the new one was better (i.e. that switching between wifi and 3g would be more seamless), but have people noticed differences? I guess I held out on upgrading to OTA because of the no SBF and the whole episode of the unlocked bootloader, but now should I consider upgrading? Would I lose any advantages of staying on the old boot loader?

What are the major differences between xtrROM and xtrSENSE?
From what I understand, these are two very popular roms for n00bs to start with.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

I'm currently debating whether I should wait for my carrier (Telus) to provide the Froyo update OTA, or use a downloaded ROM. I'm more or less clear on the advantages/DISadvantages of using a downloaded RUU. I'm less clear on the advantages of waiting for Telus to offer it. I recently got the HTC Desire, and the Telus update could be as late as November. I would really like to install Froyo NOW, because once I start using the phone more and entering contacts and agendas and all of that, I don't want to have to redo all the work I did configuring the phone. Waiting for Telus OTA UPDATE:
* I get the update NOW, and I can get on with my life.
* No risk bricking the phone (biggest thing holding me back!)
* No need to waste an entire SD card, just to keep a backup of the Goldcard image in case of later updates
* I LOSE my 1-year warranty with Telus on the phone if its been hacked (UNLESS I can save version 2.1 and flash it back to that??)

I'm trying to create an application that has 3 tabs. Under the middle tab should be a ListView. It starts up fine (on the left tab) but when I click the middle tab it crashes.
The other two tabs are static data specified in the main.xml file. But the middle tab, I try to create dynamically. Here's the code from the main onCreate function:
CODE:...............
Instead I appear to get an exception:
CODE:...............
ContactListActivity is defined this way:
public class ContactListActivity extends ListActivity { ...
I get the feeling that I'm supposed to create the Intent with something like Intent.ACTION_VIEW but this is where I get lost. If this is the problem, I could try stuff until it works, but I'd prefer to understand why.
Or is ContactListActivity supposed to override something ?

I have a problem with rotation, during my ListActivity is loading data from the network. To do it I use a background thread which recovers data and put them inside an ArrayList. While this thread works, there is Progress dialog activated in foreground. For the rotation I use the method with onRetainNonConfigurationInstance() to save my ArrayList's state. After android calls this method, I call dismiss() on the progress dialog on onStop(). Then the activity is created as new with onCreate(), but it use the getLastNonConfigurationInstance() to recover the ArrayList's state. Now, my problem. If I rotate from portrait to lanscape when the download is terminated and I see the data in portrait yet, everything is ok. If I rotate during progress dialog is showing I have two cases: 1- onRetainNonConfigurationInstance() saves the arraylist fully recovered, the thread terminates and everything is ok. 2- onRetainNonConfigurationInstance() saves the arraylist empty, i think the download isn't finished yet. The onCreate is called and my list is empty, the thread terminates, but i don't see anything in my list. If I am in this case and I still rotate from landscape to portrait now I can see my list full with all the data. Why? Where am I wrong?
