Android :: Images Unsharp / Blurry With Standard Screen Size
Feb 11, 2010
I have been developing on a ADP2 (Google Ion) with a "standard" screen size (with a resolution of 320x480)... Our designer made some pretty neat Images with which to create the GUI, and when placing everything within the layout XML files it looks pretty good... That is, on the Eclipse renderer, the one who shows you how it will look like on the device... Thus not the emulator itself... Unfortunately when run on the real device the supercrisp and beatifull images become blurry and unsharp... I actually do'nt see why this should happen ? Everything has been designed whilst keeping the target devices resolution into account... Is this because most probably the dpi of the screen on which the Images were (big 24 inch screen) is different that the devices? And if so how can this be corrected (maybe within the designers application as well, I think he uses Photoshop).

I have been trying to deal with the blurry images from the Eris's camera but enough is enough. Unless my subject is completely still for 10 seconds, my picture is looks blurry. Does anyone have this problem? Could I fix it in settings? I am currently using the 5 meg pixel setting.

For some reason on the main screen on my new htc desire hd the shortcut images of my contacts seem to be very blurry and hard to make out. Is there a setting to make it more clear, also my contacts list the pics down the side are blurry to. I am sure it was clearer on my other htc I had. Also when I scroll up and down on the main screen the icons seem to very slightly flicker
is this normal?

My camera used to work perfectly. My pics were amazing, and it was just amazing. The focus was never off. Clear, crisp, sharp images. Now, out of nowhere it seems, the camera won't focus. My images are EXTREMELY blurry. It's terrible. Even when I'm just setting up to take the pic, the image looks blurry on the screen. It's bad enough that I can no longer even get the barcode scanner to work. I'm assuming that something wrong with my lens and not anything to do with software etc. And yes, I've cleaned it. And cleaned it. And cleaned it to no avail.

Does anyone else have problems changing email font size in the standard mail app? I would like to see email text in a smaller font size, but changing it to smaller or smallest in the settings does not seem to have any effect.

I notice that most apps that come with the OS use a standard look and feel, with common icons and images for common tasks. For example, when data is being loaded, you see the "Loading" text with the green revolving arrow to indicate that something is happening, or when you are asked if you want to take a photo, you see the gray camera icon image. I have also seen private apps downloaded from the market use these same icons. So.
1) Are these images available for our use? I'm sure my apps would look more pro if they used them.
2) Is it recommended that android developers follow the standard look and feel in their apps?

I guess this question has been asked before, but I can't seem to find a proper answer/solution. Have a note-taking app, which allows to take pictures. For that I start an intent, that starts up the built-in camera-app. So far so good. But when I show that image in my app, it's in a much smaller format The funny/weird thing is, that the camera-app did take a full-resolution picture! But for some reason I can't get the full version to show in my app? So, when I use the standard Android Gallery app, and go to that picture, it is very obvious that it's full size (I can zoom in and see details I really can't see when I zoom in, in my own app). Also, the dimensions are really those of the original picture, taken with the 5MP camera. In my app, they are very small. My phone has Android 2.2, but the same happens on my emulator (Android 2.1). How should I retrieve the pictures in my app? Tried a couple of ways, but none works :( Don't need a complete example (allthough that's very welcome), just a few clues are enough to search for myself.

I have my photo settings reset to factory settings, I did this because after I transfer my images to my computer, they are only full thumbnail size. I have selected on the camera the 16M setting, so as I understand that should be pretty big right? (bare with me, I am not by any means a photog) so I am assuming some where in the camera I must have changed a setting that changes the maximum image size for transfer? I am so lost and confused, I just want nice pics of my kids.

I am designing a home screen widget. I ran this widget on a HTC Hero device, which has a screen of 320 pixels * 480 pixels with mdpi. It ran perfect on HTC Hero. The widget takes 3 cells * 2 cells space, i.e. 240 pixels * 200 pixels.Then I ran this widget on a Nexus One device, which has a screen of 480 pixels * 800 pixels, mdpi. Since Nexus One also is mdpi, so I though 240dip is equivalent to 240 pixels on Nexus One and 200dip is equivalent to 200 pixels on Nexus One, so the widget will not take 3 cells * 2 cells space on Nexus One device. To my surprise, when running on Nexus One device, the widget take exact 3 cells * 2 cells, about 360 pixels * 300 pixels, on Nexus One device.I am confused. The layout xml above specifies 240dip in width and 200dip in height for the widget, but why did it take 360 pixels * 300 pixels on Nexus One Device? What am I missing?

I'm writing an application and I want one of my activities to have a background. I've read the android docs about supporting multiple resolutions etc. but my designer is asking me what size the wallpapers should be and I do not want a lot of images for low, normal, high dpi in all the screen sizes.
What would be the most space efficient way to get a nice screen filling graphic background on all those screens? Android is great and all, but I do not want to end up with a huge application since I need all sizes of images for everything.

From Android widget screen guidelines,we know that, home screen has 4*4 cells, and in portrait orientation, each cell is 80 pixels wide by 100 pixels tall. I think these are for baseline HVGA screen. How about for large screens and hdpi screens, do they still have 4*4 cells for widget and each cell in portrait orientation is still 80 pixels * 100 pixels?

I found something that has helped my X photos to have more clarity. But before I write this, this is *not* spam to promote a product. It's just something I wanted to share because I've been a little disappointed with my X photos (as can be seen in some of my prior posts), and there may be others who feel the same way.
After reading the "Droid X vs. Droid Incredible 8MP Camera Showdown" thread comparing photos between the 2 phones, and seeing the sharpness of the Incredible camera over the X (even though the colors of the X appear to be more accurate), I wondered if there was a way to improve the photos taken with my X.
I did a search on the internet and found this free, almost professional-grade photo editing software: GIMP - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. So I downloaded it to see how well it worked.
I found that using the "sharpen" feature actually produced a certain harshness to the photos, and the size of the photos were reduced when saving them. After enlarging both the originals and the "sharpened" photos to 100% to compare them, I could see why. The Sharpen filter seems to reduce the overall quality and pixels of the photos, thus producing a harshness.
However, I read on the Wiki site about using the "Unsharp Mask" to accomplish the same thing without the degradation that the Sharpen filter produces. And sure enough, not only were my photos sharper with the "Unsharp Mask," but they did not have that harshness produced by the Sharpen filter. And after enlarging the before-and-after photos to 100%, I could see that the quality of the full-size view had not been reduced in the process as it had with the Sharpen filter. And when saving the edited photos they are approximately the same size as the originals (indicating that some of the photo information hadn't just been "removed" while filtering the picture).
That said, there are settings to the Unsharp Mask that need to be considered. I have changed the "amount" setting from .25 to 1.0 depending on the photo in order to make sure I'm sharpening the photo as much as possible without overdoing it and producing a similar harshness that results from too much alteration. You must be careful to look at the entire photo, and even to enlarge the before-and-after to 100% if needed, to get the proper balance on a per-photo basis.
The photos still aren't quite as sharp as the Incredible's after editing (the optics must simply be better on that camera in that regard). But this near-professional quality software can really make photos stand out with more clarity and it retains the accuracy of the color content of the Droid X camera. It also offers a large selection of interesting filters to do other things with your pictures.
Note: If anyone decides to try this out, be aware that this software attempts to install other programs, but it allows you to decline them. You must decline about 2-3 other programs during the process of installation. I also had to uninstall the Yahoo toolbar afterwards. I guess that's how they can offer it for free.
I apologize if this post is inappropriate -- please feel free to remove it if it causes any offense. I am just really glad that I can tweak my X photos so that they have greater clarity than the X software (including Vignette) produces.

On my galaxy S, it comes standard news page on the 2nd home screen, called AP news or something, is there any way of getting this replaced, by bbc news, or UK times? As a UK based person I really don't care about news in USA. If there is no way or doing this, is there any way of adding the news screen BACK to the 2nd home screen.

First of all I'm a newbie when it comes to Android programming. So if this question is totally stupid please delete it ASAP Question: I'm going to draw a grid of 10x10 PNG images. Each image is 32x32 px. All of the images are unique. I'm thinking that the easiest way seems to be to put each image in an ImageView. If adding all ImageView's to the layout would this give me some kind of performance hit?Would there be any smarter way to draw these images?

I got to know that the devices with screen resolution 1280x720 or 720x1280 are extra large screen devices.
But when I run my application on Samsung Galaxy S3 SGH-T999 (resolution 720x1280) throught eclipse, the following code prints "Normal screen" i.e. it is a normal screen device but according to my knowledge it should print "Extra Large screen". If its a normal screen size device actually then why its picking the layout (XML) file from res/layout-xlarge-port folder instead of res/layout? Need to understand this screen size concept so that I can make my application for multiple screen sizes.
// get and check the screen size of the device
int screenSize = getResources().getConfiguration().screenLayout &
Configuration.SCREENLAYOUT_SIZE_MASK;
switch(screenSize) {
case Configuration.SCREENLAYOUT_SIZE_XLARGE:
Toast.makeText(this, "Extra Large screen",Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
break;
[code]...
