Is there a way of telling the phone with apps (not necessary for the proper functioning of the phone) start at start-up and which don't? I hate for unnecessary apps to auto start.

So I got my first Android phone, this Evo 4G last week. It's really great and I love it but I have all kinds of crazy stuff going on, triple contacts, facebook contacts, my gmail account contacts, my business google apps contacts, just things seem kinda out of control since it's my first Android phone. So I'm thinking about just starting with a clean slate, now that I know a lot more about what the phone can do, which calendars to you, which sms program, other apps that are must-haves. Is this a good idea? Will it do anything to my SD card, which has all of my apps backed up?

My Hero won't start after applying the second upgrade, the 3.32 (the one containing android 2.1) the first one installed fine. The phone downloaded the update via WiFi and when I choose to install it, the phone rebooted and I saw the progress bar finishing, but afterwards I got an exclamation mark in a triangle, and the phone locked up. I then had to remove the battery to turn off the phone and apply the 2.73.405.6 ROM from HTC.com via fastboot usb.
The phone is fully charged, not rootet, and ive tried downgrading and upgrading it 3 times with the same result. I even called the HTC Hotline and got a hold in a nice female supporter whom was cleary not choosen for her technical skills, she didn't even know how to restore the phone via fastboot. She was also unable to answer why they didn't have a ROM (exe) installer for the 3.32 upgrade.

Does switching activities in Android start a fresh JVM? It seems like each activity is meant to run as its own "main" method. If I have a singleton (via Guice, not an actual singleton in this case) should I expect to be re-creating it every time I switch activities?

I'm a beginner in programming. My experience so far is only in Actionscript 2 and 3. So I have a basic understanding of declaring variables, loops, arrays, if/then, do/while... I'm wanting to move to developing for Android phones so I'm wondering what suggestions people have for where to go next. Should I jump right to Android? Start with a 'beginning Java' approach? Or should I go some other route to beef up my knowledge of OOP concepts before launching into Android? I have my Dev environment set up and completed the Hello Android tutorial and I'm just wondering if I am going to be in over my head quickly?

Is there any way to start my Droid Phone in "clean" mode? I just discovered that one recording app was killing my outbound phone, and I have some other wierdnesses with zoom happening. Before I go round and round with Verizon, I would like to start my phone without all the add-ons running. But I do not want to uninstall and reinstall everything, just to see/prove that the new apps are not causing my zoom problem.

I hope this is the right place to post this.I am using an HTC Desire running Android 2.2 from the Telus OTA update.I wanted to see the OS without the Sense UI so I went through Settings/Applications/Manage Applications select 'All' selected HTC Sense and hit the 'Clear defaults' button, it did nothing when I went back to the home screen, so I went back and 'hit 'Force stop' the phone restarted but was still using the Sense UI so I shut it down and tried to restart it immediately after the screen went black. The phone then vibrated 4 times in a row and did nothing. After that the phone would not start. The only thing I could do was remove the battery for a few seconds put it back in then start the phone up. Now I find the phone has an issue where if I don't give it a few seconds after shutting down it will do the 4 vibrates and then do nothing. The 'Clear defaults' option in the Sense UI is now always blocked out so I can not select it.Has this happened to anyone else? Is the vibrating then becoming a paper weight an issue due to the Sense UI issue or is that normal because I may not be giving it enough time to shut down or something?

I crashed it by messing around with one of the apps (I replaced an audio file then rebuilt and signed the app, and then the app crashed after it played the file), and the only way I could turn it off was to take out the battery. Now it won't start up again. It gets past the flashing Samsung animation, but then after that I just get a blank screen. The light behind the buttons stays on and I can't turn the phone off without taking out the battery.I've tried taking the SIM card out and pressing the volume down button, send button, then end button but the same thing happened.

My Samsung Galaxy S won't fully start up. I take the battery out and start it and it goes through the starting up phase with the spirals and what not and then the screen says Galaxy S then the phone either just shuts off by itself or the screen is black but the bottom two touch buttons are lit up. Ive tried to do the reset on it by holding the Up volume, home button and power button but that doesn't seem to work either.

When I power up my phone I get the standard start up and then the phone starts ringing very loudly. It's almost like the old phone ringing sound we remember from years ago. It rings 5 or 6 times and then stops. This is not my ring tone and it's louder than any other system sounds. This has been an issue for only the past week, I've had the phone for just over a month. The only other thing I've noticed is that my battery has drained more quickly than normal the past couple days. I thought it might be Lookout security but I deleted that app and it continues.

The SMART30 code craziness today made me wonder, how soon will Verizon start running other promotions for the Incredible? How long did it take them to do BOGO or $99 offers for the DROID? I want to get my phone as cheap as possible, but as a 3rd line on a family plan Verizon doesn't tend to offer me deals. I noticed Wirefly had their price set at $149.99 to start sales Thursday. Will it be a long time before Verizon drops the price?

I have had the Sprint Hero since it was released and have weathered the common bugs (battery, apps losing their names/logos and not working after restarting the phone, etc) I have a new one now that I cant seem to fix. GPS was working fine in all my applications (google maps, Nav, Sherpa, Layar etc). I leave GPS on as it is only ever used when an app requires your location. Now with GPS on if I run google maps or any other application the little GPS icon shows up in the header but after 30 seconds or so the application says your location cannot be found. I have tried numerous time inside and out and nothing. I can turn on network location and get the cell tower triangulation of my location but thats not true GPS. I have not soft or hard reset but afraid im going to have to.....how does that work? Assuming hard i lose everything....do i keep my apps and home screens with a soft reset?

I've been getting intermittent (and I'd even say random) lag spikes on my phone, either through basic navigation of the phone's features or just turning the screen on from time to time. For instance:
- I'll turn my screen on, and go to unlock it, and get zero response from the screen. It won't fix itself unless I turn the screen off again, and then back on, which will fix the problem 90% of the time. I think once I had to remove the battery.
- Randomly the phone will start freaking out, either becoming unresponsive to what I'm doing, or eventually going black and reverting back to the lock screen.
- Sometimes navigating through apps is a breeze, but other times, it's an absolute nightmare. Slow responsiveness to touch input, and even extremely slow response from my home keys. They'll vibrate to let me know they're receiving the input, but nothing will happen (tapping home button with no response from the phone.)
There has been other issues, but all mainly stemming from slow/poor response to user input. Is my phone a lemon, or is this normal? Is anyone else experiencing less than stellar performance from their EVO, or is the phone performing like a top-of-the-line, iPhone competitor should?
I came from an iPhone, and don't get me wrong, it had it's share of slow reaction at times, too. But we're talking a 2+ year old iPhone 3G, not a brand new iPhone 4. When I first got my 3G, the thing was fast as lightning. My EVO? Not so much.

My Droid Eris's battery was low yesterday, and it died before i could charge it. I plugged it in through the night, and this morning when I turned it on, it wouldn't boot up. Well, it turns on, but it gets stuck on the white screen with the three skateboarding androids. I left it like that for about 4 hours, and it still hasn't changed.
I tried removing the battery, and then putting it back in, but that didn't help. Any suggestions?
