Android :: Access Views Inside Layout When I Reuse It Multiple Times?
Aug 6, 2010
I have read the Android UI trick 2 on Android developers, which tells people how to include a layout in another layout file multiple times, and give these included layouts different id. However, the sample here is overwriting the layout id, not the id of the views IN this layout. For example, if the workspace_screen.xml looks like this: And I include it three times in another layout file. Do I end up with three TextViews with id firstText, and another three with secondText? Isn't there an id collision? And how do I find the secondText TextView in the third included layout with findViewById? What should I input in the findViewById method?

I am using a linear layout to draw a scalable background in my app. I am then defining multiple imageviews inside the linear layout, all of which are PNGs containing a transparency layer. I am wanting to overlay these transparent imageviews on top of the background. My issue is that only the first defined imageview shows on top of the background, any subsequent imageviews do not appear.
CODE: Note that imgSen1 appears properly with transparency overlaid on the background. imgSen2 does not appear. If I define imgSen2 first, and imgSen1 second, imgSen2 then appears properly, as if only the first defined imageview can be seen. I would like to have multiple imageviews with transparency overlaying the background.

android:layout_height="436dp"[code]...

I am implementing a music player application in Android. My play list selection screen is implemented as a tab selector widget which contains a ListActivity inside each of the tabs: Artist, Albums, Songs.
I want to update the ListView in each of the ListActivity when I delete an item from any of the lists.
i.e. When I long press an item in the Artists list a context menu is drawn with "Delete Artist"
And it should delete all the songs from this artist in the Songs ListView, delete all the albums by this artist in the Albums ListView, and finally delete the entry for the artist in the Artist ListView.
Each of the ListActivity has its own fillData() method, which updates the ListView when the button in the context menu is pressed.
How can I call the fillData() method of the Albums ListActivity after I update the ListView inside of the Artists ListActivity?

Does android reuse views during a orientation change? I have a progress bar in my activity. I set the progress to 50%, and then do an orientation change. But for some reason, the progress bar maintain 50% after the orientation. I have call setprogress(0) in the onCreate() of my activity. And I have put 'printf' in anywhere I call setProgress(), i don't still don't understand why the progress bar maintains 50% everytime I do an orientation change?

Are there design guidelines to help decide if an application with multiple views should be designed with multiple activities or just one activity and control the back button itself.
I've tried both. My most complex applications using one activity per screen. However, now that I'm successfully written an app with just one activity and handling the back button myself, I don't see any compelling reason to use multiple activities. The one activity application is much simpler and more straightforward.
What advantages of multiple activities am I missing?

I'm working on an application using xml layouts.
I wish to know which is better:
1. Use few activities and change its contentview
2. Use an activity for each 'view' needed
If both works, in which case which option would be better?

Im using ListView to to show some custom data, once data is updated in the adapter i call notifyDatasetChanged(), so the view will get updated, all of this works well, my issue though is i would like to run an animation once only on items that got changed when the adapter was updated. currently i keep a copy of all the changed objects and i tried to animate the correct items through the getView() call.
However if i do it only once for every getView call then i see no animation most of the time on items that changed. if i continue to do so in successive getView calls i see animation on items that don not change as well and also the ones that changed get animated again and again.
Im guessing sometimes android calls the getView() for other reasons than showing the generated view immediately, and thats the reason it doesnt work if i do it once.

I have a HorizontalScrollView that has lots of views and images inside it.
The issue is that if I have lots of stuff inside it I will get a 'java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: bitmap size exceeds VM budget'
is there any way to use some kind of cache, or add/remove stuff as I move left/right so its not on memory all the time?

IIUC, there should only be one instance of a given service, it is a singleton. However, my (audio engine) service gets instantiated multiple times, although I do nothing for it. When the service crashes (for example when I uninstall the app through adb), it gets scheduled for restart ("Scheduling restart of crashed service.. "). I understand this is an effect of the service being sticky. After that, when my app starts, it calls startService() and bindService(), and the service gets appropriately started and bound. But the service is then reinstantiated and onCreate() is called repeatedly, as many times it was scheduled for restart.
Each instance then wait for clients to bind and register, but onBind() is only called in the "main" service instance. The additional instances wait a bit for client to bind, and since that doesn't happen, they call stopSelf(). But stopSelf() has absolutely no effect in these "dead" instances, onDestroy() is never called.
The "main" service instance does work as expected, and when it decides to call stopSelf(), onDestroy() is indeed called. Worse, all these dead instances accumulate, they never gets destroyed. Therefore, their only possible end is a crash (which happen every time I launch/install through adb), and thus scheduled restart.
So that in the end I get many of these dead instances, which are restarted progressively once by minute approximately.

In this application i am using LocationListener class to update the location when the Location is changed. In each Activity i have different LocationListener to update location and do some specific work on updated location. But my problem is that when i am changing my location through DDMS , the LocationListener is being called of that current Activity as well as all the activities of the whole application where LocationListener has been defined. I don't know whether there should be one LocationListener for the whole application or for each Activity we should have different LocationListener.

I need to be able to schedule multiple Notifications at different times in the future.
I tried doing this with an AlarmManager, but that isn't suitable, for the following reason. From AlarmManager.set(): "If there is already an alarm for this Intent scheduled (with the equality of two intents being defined by filterEquals(Intent)), then it will be removed and replaced by this one."
Guess what, the sending intents are equal, apart from different Extra's (but those don't count for filterEquals).
So how can I schedule multiple notifications, which will still be shown when my application is killed (the whole reason I tried AlarmManager)?

So the situation is this, I have a ListView that is embedded in two LinearLayout ViewGroups to form a screen. BaseAdapter.get View() (the implementation of the ListAdapter) is typically called n times (where n is numElements) to render the screen. The problem I have is this set of calls is being repeated for every ViewGroup that the list is contained in...So for a Layout like this:
-LinearLayout --Linearlayout ---ListView
The adapters get View() is being called n*3 times (3 = 1 for the parent LinerarLayout, one for the child LinearLayout and one for the List itself).
This is obviously a problem when the items in the List are expensive to build (even with recycling).
So I'm looking for some guidance on this, as the documentation doesn't seem to note this behavior from what I can see.
A small, basic example of the source is located on my post here http://www.anddev.org/listview_getting_rendered_multiple_times-t5290.... with more details Oswell as a ready made eclipse project(also attached below) if anyone is keen to try it out.

Is there a way to get all the children views of a layout, from the Java code so that I can loop through them and set an attribute? Specifically, I'd like to set the "layout_width" based on the screen size. Since this "layout_width" would be the same for all the views, I'd prefer to loop through instead of calling each individual View separately by their id. The following is my main.xml:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/ android" android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content">
<LinearLayout android:id="@+id/myRow1" android:orientation="horizontal" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_weight="1"> <TextView android:text="1" android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="50dip" android:layout_weight="1"/>
<TextView android:text="2" android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="50dip" android:layout_weight="1"/>
<TextView android:text="3" android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="50dip" android:layout_weight="1"/>
<TextView android:text="4" android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="50dip" android:layout_weight="1"/>
<TextView android:text="5" android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="50dip" android:layout_weight="1"/>
<TextView android:text="6" android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="50dip" android:layout_weight="1"/>
</LinearLayout> </LinearLayout>

As you can tell from the output below the first time it gets called with " alabama" and the second time it gets called with "labama". I am not sure as to why it is doing this but if anyone could help that would be awesome.

I am working on a graphics application in Android. I have a question regarding MULTIPLE SURFACE VIEWS. Can I be rendering multiple surface views at the same time. Initially, when I had two surface views in the same activity, it didn't seem to work, as it used to show only one at any time. But, with one surface view attached to one activity, is there any way I can keep the background activity's Surface View alive so that both the surfaces get rendered together?
