Android :: How To Clear Dependency Databases In "system Setting"?
Jun 22, 2009
I am developing an application which can share data with email, contact and calendar application. Now I met a problem when I clear this application data or uninstall this application in the "system setting". "Setting" can only clear my own application data now. This problem is that how to clear email, contact and calendar data at the same time of clearing my application data. This problem can concluded as that how to clear several databases which have dependency at the same time.

On one of my contacts, I set "mark as default" on one of the phone numbers. Now I want to clear this (so that there is no default) but I cannot figure out how to do it.
I want to clear it b/c I have a front-screen shortcut to this contact, and I want to be able to select which number to dial when I tap it.

I'm playing with the alternative Home app that comes with the SDK.
I can set this as default for 'Home' action.
I can unset this by -->Setting->Manage Application->My Alternative Home-> "clear defaults"
Question:
How to do this "clear defaults" by code?
I've browsed the forums but cannot find an answer.

I'm using a Galaxy S phone (Epic 4G) and I have the following problem.I created a shortcut to a contact on the Home Screen like this:
- from the home screen, menu->add->shortcut->contact
- contact manager comes up; select contact
- the icon appears on the home screen.
Then when I tap the shortcut, it pops up a menu (call/info/message/email icons). Tapping the "call" icon displays all the available phone #s for that contact. However, I used "Mark as default" to set a default number for that contact, and now it dials that number right away instead of giving me the choice of numbers. I want to UNDO this, and clear the default number setting but I cannot figure out how to do it!

Been using CM6 for a week or so and wanted to free up some space in my system folder. Is there anything I can remove then reinstall and have it reinstall elsewhere? Or is there anything I can completely delete from my system folder?

I understand that userland apps on android cannot set the system clock. Wanting to know more about how the security mechanism is set up for the system I did some digging around in the source code.
/dev/alarm is opened R/W to set the system clock using SystemClock.setCurrentTimeMillis.
How the permissions work to determine whether or not an application has permission to set the clock.
I assume it's just a user level permission, and the write bit for /dev/ alarm is only enabled for the "system user" and not the "userland user" applications run under.

I've mapped my android phone as a network drive using Samba and changed the smb.conf file to show the System Root directory as well. However, system root is default set as R/O so to mange files USING my computer I need to change the permission to R/W using a file manager (such as root explorer). This is annoying, as I have to keep doing this in order to write to certail directories.
I would like the / directory (root) to be mounted as R/W as default so that I can quickly edit files on my PC without having to constantly change it to R/O. I want something that will automatically mount my phone's root dir into rw upon boot, without custom apps/having to manually mount as rw everytime it reboots.

I can't copy the file 'hosts' back to system/etc. after I cut it out of the folder a couple mins ago. When I use ES File Explorer (don't wanna pay 4euros for Root Explorer..) to try and paste it back (with everything set to RW and having root permissions) it says 'permission denied'. I don't know what I'm doing wrong..

Is there a way to add common system setting into the notification pull down menu?
On my old Samsung Galaxy S3, when you swipe down from the top of the screen and pull down notifications, at the top above notifications are buttons for common system settings to access (in order they are: Wi-Fi, GPS, Sound, Rotation, Bluetooth, Smart Stay, Airplane Mode, Power Saving, Hands-free mode, Screen Mirroring)
This was very useful because was easy to quickly access key functions. For example "1) swipe down and 2) press WiFi to turn on/off" or "1) swipe down and 2) press GPS to turn location on/off".
On my new Nexus 5 this functionality does not exist. When you swipe down to see notifications, key system buttons are not present. Instead there is a single system button in the upper right corner which you need to press to for common system settings (Brightness, Settings, WiFi, Mobile [ATT/Verizon], Battery, Airplane Mode, Bluetooth, Location)
This means to access common system settings requires an extra step. For example "1) swipe down, 2) press system button and 3) press WiFi to access WiFi page"
Is there a way to put these common system setting into the notification pull down menu?

I have a module called MyApp, and another module called MyAppTests which has a dependency on MyApp. Both modules produce APKs, one named MyApp.apk and the other MyAppTests.apk.I normally build these in IntelliJ or Eclipse, but I'd like to create an ant buildfile for them for the purpose of continuous integration.I used "android update" to create a buildfile for MyApp, and thanks to commonsware's answer to my previous question I've been able to build it successfully using ant.I'd now like to build MyAppTests.apk using ant. I constructed the buildfile as before using "android update", but when I run it I get an error indicating that it's not finding any of the classes in MyApp.Taking a que from my previous question, I tried putting MyApp.apk into my MyAppTests/libs, but unfortunately that didn't miraculously solve the problem.

I'm using google moderator as a simple way to collect feedback for my application. There's a google moderator app on the market that provides a better interface than the website for mobile users.Getting to the point: Is there a way to get it to install along with your application or a reasonable way to identify if another package is available so I can direct users to the market to download it?

I have a and Android project and its test project. I can run tests successfully in the emulator. As the Android project has dependencies on a third library project, I want to use classes of the third project in the test cases too. For this, I need to add a dependency from the test project to the third project as well. Compile-time this works, but when I do a remote run of my AndroidTestCase, all tests fail. For each test, I get a NoClassDefFoundError, but not for third project classes, but for a class in the Android project itself!

I want to share data between 2 applications. the idea is both applications can write and read the SAME data and there is no dependency which one of the apps is installed or first created the data. I have 2 version of the same app: regular and premium and I don't know which of them will be first installed and both of them can change it.I tried to use ContentProvider but the problem is that only the first app can create the Provider and when it is uninstalled it deletes that custom Provider. I want the Content to be kept for the second app. Also, I tried to use Settings.System which keeps the data regardless if the application is installed or not but I don't want to use the permission for that (it is very problematic from user perspective). BTW, it seems that I can change ANY of the Settings.System which is not secured from Android OS perspective - but this is a subject for other post.

I have a preference where I'd like to toggle the state of a preference depending on the state of a checkbox. This works wonderfully if I want something visible when it's checked. However I want another preference to be visible when it's NOT checked. Is there a way to specify "android:dependency= !"pref_server_active" or android:dependency= NOT("pref_server_active") ?

I'm using maven-android-plugin in my android application. I'm a dependency which maven download from remote repository before APK build. But if I want to debug the APK in emulator it does not include the those maven dependency and as a result APK does not run with normal Run (using Eclipse) and can not be debug as well. Could someone know how to debug in this situation?

Is there XML attribute that does the exact opposite of android:dependency? What I would like the dependent preference to be enabled when the other is not checked and disabled when it is checked. Maybe the issue isn't with android:dependency maybe there is an xml attribute that I can add to make the default for that preference disabled and then android:dependency will toggle it the opposite way like I want. I tried setting android:enabled="false" in the preference and it disables it like I want but even with it being dependent on the other preference it didn't enable it like I had hoped.

What exactly does HTC Sense Clear Data actually clear? That may be a solution to reverting back to 5 homescreen pages instead of 7 without having to do a factory reset. Just curious as to what I am going to mess up? Will i just have to personalize the homescreen again, put widgets up, reconnect to fb, twitter, myfaves, etc. It's not going remove any 3rd party apps, just make me create new widgets, etc..?

I've made a few apps now, which use an SQLite database, no problems. In my latest app, I want two tables, and I just released that every example I can find only creates one table. So, is this a limitation? Must I use only one table? Assuming I can use two, how do I go about changing my create script?

I have ListView whose CursorAdapter is bound to my local database table. Is there a good way to make it so that when new entries / new data is inserted into my table, my ListView automatically refreshes?
This is easily done on ContentProviders via ContentObservers. How do I do the same when iterating over local databases?

Lets say Im creating an Android app for a company that already provides some sort of online service. I want my android app to extend this online service and I want the app to interact with my remote databases, would I embed a web browser in my application or directly connect to my remote database from within my code? If I am directly connected to a database from within code and not through a web browser, would that be a security risk since the connection info would be distributed in the code?

Can anyone tell me, is it possible to use the ADB to pull and push a database from an app, without root privileges on the phone? For example, I know the location on my rooted magic and dream is:
/data/data/com.xxxx.xxxx/databases/xxxx
I know that you can use ADB without root, but when trying to use the shell - you can't view that location without root privaliges. But I have been told you can use push and pull if you know the file you want? Basically I want to pull a database from MY app on a non rooted phone modify it and push it back on. Only trouble I have is, the two phones I have are both root and I don't have access to a non root one to try it out.

I have some external sqlite files I'd like to include with my app. It looks like I can add them to the /assets folder, then read them from there? Is the /assets folder the appropriate location for them?
I've used SQLiteOpenHelper to open databases my app creates at runtime, which just uses a unique db name. Will the sqlite files in the assets folder also be accessible using SQLiteOpenHelper in the same manner?

I'm trying this with my Nexus One.
I have the android SDK and have used the command
adb pull /data/data/com.myapp.android/databases C:pulls
but all I get is
pull: building file list...
0 files pulled. 0 files skipped.
Also, it seems no matter how much data I add to the tutorial NotePad app I installed, the data size for the app (as shown in Settings) never exceeds 8KB. How is this possible? Is there some other place where databases are stored? When I use the File Explorer view (that's part of ADT) in Eclipse, I see there's nothing in /data.
To add a twist, I have no trouble pulling any other files from the device. It's just databases I have trouble with.
