Android :: Permissions Related To Dev - Alarm And Setting The System
Apr 10, 2009
I understand that userland apps on android cannot set the system clock. Wanting to know more about how the security mechanism is set up for the system I did some digging around in the source code.
/dev/alarm is opened R/W to set the system clock using SystemClock.setCurrentTimeMillis.
How the permissions work to determine whether or not an application has permission to set the clock.
I assume it's just a user level permission, and the write bit for /dev/ alarm is only enabled for the "system user" and not the "userland user" applications run under.

I can't copy the file 'hosts' back to system/etc. after I cut it out of the folder a couple mins ago. When I use ES File Explorer (don't wanna pay 4euros for Root Explorer..) to try and paste it back (with everything set to RW and having root permissions) it says 'permission denied'. I don't know what I'm doing wrong..

I need to compile an application with system permissions in order to use target application com.android.settings. For now while I try to run my apk I get the error message
Test run failed: Permission Denial:
starting instrumentation
ComponentInfo{com.jayway.test/android.test.InstrumentationTestRunner}
from pid=354, uid=354 not allowed
because package com.jayway.test does
not have a signature matching the
target com.android.settings
How can I compile my application with system permissions?

There is this LG LII optimus series phone, it was bought at a physical reputable store, haven't been changed whats so ever (not a single new program was added).
I've just noticed that the alarm clock app that came preinstalled has the following permissions:
-Your personal information- read call logs,read your contacts.
-Network communication-full network access.
-Phone calls- read phone status and identity.
-System tools-
-Network communications- view network communications, wifi connections.
-Development toos- test access to protected storage.
-Hardware controls-
-Run at start up.
- Modify system settings.
I'm probably missing something...

I've noticed a troubling issue with app permissions. It seems that after installing, some apps that didn't ask for these two permissions:
Storage: modify/delete SD card contents
Phone calls: read phone state and identity
will magically acquire them after install! These apps do not ask for these permissions during install, nor do their Market pages disclose that they need them. After looking through many logcat messages during an install, I found this:
04-07 03:23:08.973,I,PackageParser,1016,com.some.app.nam e.here: compat added android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE android.permission.READ_PHONE_STATE
Digging around, I found this online:
Android permissions: Phone Calls: read phone state and identity - Stack Overflow. It seems that an app that is compatible with systems earlier than 1.6 will automatically be assigned those two permissions. If a developer is willing to make their app compatible only with 1.6+ systems, they can change their app's manifest:
<uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="4" android:targetSdkVersion="4" />
and when users on 1.6+ devices install the app, those two extra permissions won't show up.
I bet a lot of app developers don't know this, and therefore their apps will seems to acquire those two permissions magically. Users will install those apps, see the two extra permissions when they inspect the app security setting and be very puzzled. They'll probably think the app is malware and uninstall it. I've contacted some app developer about this issue, so that they can (hopefully) fix their app so it doesn't look like malware. Unfortunately, until all legit apps are fixed, it'll be hard to distinguish amongst apps that have those permissions, which app actually needs those permissions, which apps need fixing, and which apps are malware.

I am trying to make my first custom ROM, but I have a problem with permissions.. this is my updater-script:
Code:
ui_print(" ");
ui_print("________________________________");
ui_print(" MADE BY FECHE ");
[Code]..
But when I press on reboot on recovery, it says that the ROOT may have been lost, then it says, repair root? I press on 'no', the device restarts but it gets a black screen right after the device logo..

I was following the directions of this thread trying to install notifications toggles to my phone. Used root explorer. However, l changed the permissions on the wrong file or folder, it seems, as the phone just displays the logo and reboots, caught in a loop.
What files and folders has to have which permissions? How can I change them if I can't boot my phone? I don't have any mod other than Root, as this was the first I was trying to use, as I have to have better access to the toggles.

In my android app, I'm setting an alarm that I want to occur repeatedly, hence using AlarmManager.setRepeating().
I don't want to keep track of whether the alarm is set myself (sounds like a bad idea that's prone to fail at some point), and there seems to be no API support for checking whether a particular alarm is already set for a given Intent.
Hence, I am pessimistically resetting the alarm each time my app activates:
alarmManager.cancel(pendingIntent);
...
alarmManager.setRepeating(..., pendingIntent);
Question: is calling setRepeating() idempotent i.e. do I need to explicitly cancel() any prior alarm or can I safely just call setRepeating() and be done with it?

I have a repeating alarm setting, I have the activity being launched, the piece I'm missing is having this triggered after x minutes of inactivity.
I'm considering keying off of SCREEN_OFF in a service and then setting an alarm and canceling it on SCREEN_ON, does anyone have an intent or other suggestion for this. I've considering polling for tasks, all kinds of pieces but I'm stuck.
Requirement:
- App launches, alarm is set to relaunch app after 5 minutes, user exits/app exits after one minute
- alarm triggers, detects phone is in use, resets alarm to trigger in fives minutes
- if phone is idle relaunches app for one minute

I've mapped my android phone as a network drive using Samba and changed the smb.conf file to show the System Root directory as well. However, system root is default set as R/O so to mange files USING my computer I need to change the permission to R/W using a file manager (such as root explorer). This is annoying, as I have to keep doing this in order to write to certail directories.
I would like the / directory (root) to be mounted as R/W as default so that I can quickly edit files on my PC without having to constantly change it to R/O. I want something that will automatically mount my phone's root dir into rw upon boot, without custom apps/having to manually mount as rw everytime it reboots.

Is there a way to add common system setting into the notification pull down menu?
On my old Samsung Galaxy S3, when you swipe down from the top of the screen and pull down notifications, at the top above notifications are buttons for common system settings to access (in order they are: Wi-Fi, GPS, Sound, Rotation, Bluetooth, Smart Stay, Airplane Mode, Power Saving, Hands-free mode, Screen Mirroring)
This was very useful because was easy to quickly access key functions. For example "1) swipe down and 2) press WiFi to turn on/off" or "1) swipe down and 2) press GPS to turn location on/off".
On my new Nexus 5 this functionality does not exist. When you swipe down to see notifications, key system buttons are not present. Instead there is a single system button in the upper right corner which you need to press to for common system settings (Brightness, Settings, WiFi, Mobile [ATT/Verizon], Battery, Airplane Mode, Bluetooth, Location)
This means to access common system settings requires an extra step. For example "1) swipe down, 2) press system button and 3) press WiFi to access WiFi page"
Is there a way to put these common system setting into the notification pull down menu?

The permissions say that you must agree to allow them to delete files from your storage including your SD card; must agree to allow them to extract any information from your phone, etc. In other words they can do any thing they want with your phone and the data in it.
Is there any way to not grant these permissions and still get updates?

I tried several alarm clocks on my droid, and they all seem to have a problem. if I set alarms for 6:30, 6:41, and 6:52 am. Each with a different sound. If i snooze alarm 1, alarm 2/3 never goes off. i thought all 3 would be seperate, but it seems only 1 can be active at a time. unless im doing something wrong. this happens on the default alarm clock and, better alarm clock.

I am overriding the functionalities of current android alarm clock. As of now, if we have set two alarm of ,say, 10:10 and 10:15, now if the first alarm pops up at 10:10, and we click on snooze button(snooze time: 10 mins), then it says that the snooze will not be set since there is already an alarm in between(the 10:15th one). Here i want to both the alarm(i.e, snoozed one and 10:15th one) to be set. Any ideas???

Are there any good alarm applications for the X10i?
Basically I use my phone as an alarm to get up for work. My old Nokia N96 I could set the alarm and then switch the phone off at night and the alarm would still go off on time. This does not seem to be the case with the X10i. It doesn't even go off when the phones in airplane mode which is poor. I just don't want to have to leave my phone on overnight in case it rings and i wake up.
Are there any good alarm apps that allows you to turn the phone off and the alarm would still ring at 6.30 for work?

I have a user complaining about a FC on my app and they were kind enough to post the stacktrace. It's a class that I cannot find anywhere and it sounds like it is related to multi-touch. I don't specifically call this class, MapView does so I don't have any control over it. It kind of looks like his Google API maps package is trying to use an unknown gesture library. Any ideas? I figure other devs using the MapView class might run into the same issue with their users. The user is using a Droid.

I am attempting to learn how to develop on the Android platform but do not quite understand the relationship between Activities and Views, because according to the documentation an Activity is almost always linked to a UI object that the user can interact with, but if this is the case where does the whole idea of Views come in?
