Android :: How Can I Minimize Stuttering Of Graphics?
Dec 31, 2009
How can I minimize the stuttering of my graphics?I am using MANY ImageView's in my program (and JUST ImageView's). I change their positions directly, when I need to change them without using "onDraw" to redraw everything. Is it ok, If I do not overwrite onDraw? I have in average 10 objects which I added to the mainscreen-layout.These 10 objects are 5 trees and 5 flowers. The trees and flowers have 5 different states and therefore 5 different ImageViews which I all added to the layout, whose just are invisible. So I have about 50 ImageViews added to my main screen When one of these objects changes its state, I just make its ImageView invisible and the ImageView of the new state visible.Is it ok to do it like that?I realized that if I just use one ImageView for every object and change the ressource of it when its state changes, all objects, which are currently added to the mainscreen-layout, change their position to (0;0). That was the reason, I have so many ImageView's added to the mainscreen-layout.Is there a better solution for that?

I'm in the process of wring a music player that can play SID tracks (music from the Commodore 64), and everything is progressing nicely, except that I sometimes get audio stuttering.The stuttering only happens when the player is in the background, and another application has focus. It's most noticeable when a cpu heavy app(like Google Earth) is running in the foreground.I have tried adjusting the priority of my thread and increasing the AudioTrack buffer size, but nothing has solved the stuttering problem.I believe the problem is that generating the audio takes quite a lot of cycles (I'm at 15-30% cpu load), and that my audio thread is being starved and cant keep up with AudioTrack's constant need for data.I'm must be doing something wrong, I can't imagine that gui threads should be able to starve a high priority audio thread.I hope someone have some ideas on how to get my player stutter free, as I'm at a loss :)

Installed Vlingo and am absolutely loving it so far. One thing that is a minor annoyance though is that I'm not finding a way to minimize the keyobard at all. On the default keyboard for the HTC Hero there is a button that minimizes the keyboard. Is this not an option at all with the Vlingo keyboard or am I just missing it?

I am using VideoView to display a video in my app. The problem is that, once the layout gets created there is lag of almost 10-30 seconds before which the video starts to play. I can see in LogCat that the video is buffering during the lag. Is there a way I can minimize this lag, or tell MediaPlayer to play the video sooner?

I use MP3's imported to 320kb quality. Lately my Desire is stuttering during playback, the song will stop for anything from a fraction of a second to 2-3 seconds, then carry on. I've reformatted my card and put everything back on but it still does it. Has anyone else encountered this? I'm sure it didn't do it originally, but lately it's happening a lot. I've read about the headphone socket occassional problem, but this stuttering occurs even if I use the phone speaker. Do I need a faster card if my MP3's are at this quality? I'd be surprised, because most MP3 songs available to buy are now offered at this quality.

I will create a service to do something when some hot situation occurs.
By hot situation I mean:
the GPS/cell coordinates are in known zone;
known Bluetooth device detected;
known Wi-Fi network detected;
weather info has change;
considerable movement speed change detected: eg. from walking to travel by car.
As you see these tasks are heavy, and will be run frequently. 15 mins, but sometimes even more, when I have to detect the movement speed of the device.
The question I have, will this drain the battery heavily?
If so, what recommendations do you have to minimize battery drain with the above tasks?

we all know there are problems with stuttering and skipping in Pandora. Here's some proof of what's going on when it happens. I hooked up my phone and grabbed the system log as I started Pandora and easily got it to stutter and skip. I added notes as to what what happening at each step.Perhaps this log will raise some awareness of the problem and if we're lucky all this will make it back to Sprint and Samsung and get fixed soon.

Surprisingly I can't find any other threads about this. Does everyone here experience some sort of lag or stuttering when flipping through homescreens? If so, have any of you figured out a way to make it smoother? It also happens with the slideout trays on the homescreen.

Hope this hasn't been asked already, but here goes. When I had my G1 occasionally i would find a few apps running in the background needlessly, and would close them down. With the Nexus One every time i check, there is at least 15-20 apps running that dont need to be. Is there a way to minimize this to conserve battery?

I was playing some music today while doing some yardwork and i noticed it was stuttering at the beginning of just about every track it played. I listened to about 12-14 songs and it stuttered in the beginning on about 8 of them, somtimes it would also stutter a few seconds after that but would be fine after that until it went to the next song. Anyone else have this issue? I've got all the apps closed with advanced task manager, so nothing is running and eating up the processor or memory. Any ideas what would cause this or a remedy for it? Any help is appreciated.

I've flashed with the new froyo ROM with senseUI and am finding it brill. One quirk though is that when typing out a text message, there's no key in the bottom left to minimize/esc from the keyboard. If I use the Back key it exits the app (chomp). It's still beta!)

What I'd like to be able to do is:
if I'm connected to a specific wifi AP (my prepaid hotspot),
1) turn off autoupdates from the Google Play app
2) turn off data for all apps except the foreground app
3) or let me decided which apps I want to allow to transfer data when connecting via that hotspot
This is to minimize costs associated with using that prepaid hotspot, but the same concept could apply for people who have limited data bandwidth per month.I'm using Android 4.1 on a Samsung S3 if it matters.

Often I'll be busy browsing or writing a message or whatever and I'll be interrupted by the full-screen incoming call display.
I'm looking for something that automatically puts incoming calls in the background, ideally just in the notification bar or something without interrupting the current app.
It's particularly annoying when I'm writing a message in Opera for example and an incoming call wipes the message because Opera doesn't have a proper restore state.
I don't want to block calls all together, just make them less intrusive.
I found a program called backgrounder, but it didn't seem to work, and from the youtube video I saw of it, a full screen still appears to pop up on an incoming call.

I am having issues with the music player, the music was crackling badly, I thought it was the headphones so I tried 3 different pairs and the same thing happened, it kept stuttering in the middle of songs. I am not at all happy about that. My mp3 player worked perfectly with the same music files, they are WMP files not mp3 because to me mp3 sounds compressed to shit. I said to because the sound quality blows away any mp3 player and when it isn't stalling and breaking up. I am considering flashing with Odin today and swapping it for number 3. I have not spilled anything on my phone or dropped it, I am so careful with it and I am curious if anyone else has this problem or does mine have a defect. I love this phone and really want to stick with it. I would like to use it for music because the sound when working is amazing. If it is a defect in my phone I will swap for another.

I know I saw this somewhere, but couldn't find it. Anybody have a zip or some sort of file to get the keyboard back from 1.5 onto the 2.1 ROMs? Not having the button to minimize/hide the keyboard is bugging me and I hate the swipe to hide.

So the "minimize keyboard" button in the lower left of the landscape qwerty keyboard works maybe every 5th time. I only started noticing this after the 2.1 OTA. However my wife has the 2.1 on her Eris as well and hers works perfectly. If I make sure to push the very top edge of the button, it works fine, but just pressing it normally in the middle rarely works. Perhaps there is something wrong with that corner if the screen.

So I'm using NexBeast v1.1 on my Droid and noticed in the clock app there is a brightness button that dims the screen even further (similar to the bedside app I'm guessing). Unfortunately the screen dimness only lasts while in that app. I was wondering: is there a way to set the overall phone brightness itself that low or keep the screen that dim outside of the app? The lowest brightness in the Droid settings is still a bit too bright for me.

I have rectangle white box. on cliking the rectangle I will draw a toolbar beneath the box and also call relayout to accomodate the toolbar ( size+100) ( i used surfaceview and in secondary thread i draw the toolbar) on click again on rectangle box it will disappear the toolbar and also has to resize the layout to original size (ie size-100) this is where I get stuck. I can disappear the toolbar however I cant call relayout either from secondary thread (says cant call from secondary thread). So I created a while loop in onlayout( this is where i create a thread to draw the toolbar) if i call requestlayout after while loop ends it doesnt do anything it doesnt call onmeasure etc.

I created a 2d game in java that runs as an applet, and i am now trying to translate this over to the android. As the android doesnt used paint() methods, i am thinking that i will have to import images of the game instead of drawing it, but i cannot find out how to do this. Anybody know how to add images to the folder and call them in the app? Also, how can i call a screen repaint() in the android?

I'd like to build an activity that is mixing layouts with 2D graphics. So for example, would like to introduce an edittext with an integer value and based on that value the size of a circle is dynamically adjusted and drawn. Any idea how to do this?
For plain graphics I am using this approach here - but how can it be expanded to cover Android layouts (buttons, editboxes, textviews, radiobuttons, etc.)?

1. What size should graphics intended to promote your app in the Market be designed for?
2. What about the larger graphics that depict screenshots of the app in the Market?
3. What size should app icons for devices be?
