Android :: Due An Upgrade Which Phone Should I Get?
Nov 27, 2010
I've had my Motorola Droid for almost a year, and I'm due an upgrade. I'm with Verizon Wireless btw.The EVO really has everything I want (Kickstand, Front camera, huge screen, HDMI) but it's Sprint only. I heard rumors and saw pictures of an EVO-esque phone (not the Merge) hitting verizon in I don't know how long. What phone should I get? I don't care about a physical keyboard. Id like a big screen, HDMI, and a front facing camera, any phones on Verizon like this, or upcoming? (Not the X).

I am looking to upgrade my phone soon (likely in a few months) and would like to know which phone is best for me.I like my eris alot but due to it being fairly out dated id like a dinew phone. I want something faster and with a bogger screen, no physical keyboard, but not huge like the droid x, which i like but its simply too big to keep in my pocket or on my side. Price is not much of a deterent for me.

The Android 2.2 Upgrade List: Phones Definitely Getting Froyo
Nexus One: Despite the shuttering of its online store, Google's flagship phone is still first in line for the Froyo upgrade. In late May, a "very limited test group" received an early copy of the 2.2 software. Google has since been working on final tweaks and expects a widespread rollout to begin soon.
Motorola Droid: The Droid that started it all is set to be second in line for the Android 2.2 upgrade. Early reports suggested the Droid could see Froyo before the end of June. We all know what happened with the Droid's 2.1 upgrade schedule, though, so don't mark your calendars just yet.
HTC Droid Incredible: HTC has confirmed that its newest Droid handset will be feasting on Froyo. No specific timeframe has been released outside of sometime "in the second half of this year."
HTC EVO 4G: The EVO 4G is the phone most frequently pitted up against Apple's new iPhone 4 (hint: the EVO wins), so it's no surprise that it's on the confirmed guest list for the latest and greatest Android release. The EVO should get Froyo sometime in the next six months.
MyTouch 3G and MyTouch 3G Slide: The entire MyTouch line of phones on T-Mobile is expected to see Froyo before the end of 2010.
HTC Desire: It's not yet available in the States, but this desirable HTC handset is on-tap to get the Android 2.2 upgrade sometime in the next six months as well.

What's the best way to back up Android phones prior to a complete wipe / re-install of new OS? (back up of sms, apps, data for apps, call log, etc etc...) Early this year it was My Backup, and Astro File manager I believe. Is there something newer or better these days?

I've never upgraded phones with the same carrier before.I usually switch carriers after my contract ends. This will be the 1st time that I'll be staying with the same carrier and upgrading to a new phone. My girlfriend and I both have centro's and god willing on friday morning we'll both have evo's.My question is do I need to bring the centro's in with me?Do they need the old phones to transfer the numbers to the evo's?Also, my current contract rates are pretty good as I had a good corporate discount when I originally signed up with Sprint.I don't work for that company anymore though. If I keep my mouth shut, will my old corporate discount carry over?

Yet another problem I'm having after upgrade... I plugged my EVO into my PC via USB to transfer videos and the PC won't detect it. I have it set as "Disk Drive" by default but it won't do anything...just starts charging. I even selected "ask everytime I connect" and it still won't do anything.

I was walking my dog and he almost slipped, all the while I happened to be taking my phone out of my pocket and boom, fell and now the screen is shattered. Its a Samsung Captivate, it seems to work just the screen is shattered. Its done. Literally. I already signed a 2 year contract with ATT, my mom isn't into smart phones and stuff, is it possible to use her upgrade and get a new phone? Then she can cancel the Data Plan? I share a family plan with her, only thing I can think of.

I want to know how I can get a new Android phone without using an upgrade (I don't have one). I would prefer a Moto first gen Droid, or a Droid 2, but right now I'm waiting until June to get a new upgrade because the people at Verizon seem to think that two years is not too long for a smart phone upgrade, especially a Android phone. Any way I can replace my Eris and still have my next upgrade intact?

Warning - confussed noob. Currently running on HTC Desire (Telstra): Build Ver: 1.16.841.1 I have downloaded from Shipped ROMS: RUU _ Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.10.405.2_R_Radio_32.44.0 0.32U_5.09.05.30_2_release_142828_signed.exe. If I do not want to root, do I just run the above EXE? Can I downgrade afterwards by just using the HTC Telstra ROM EXE? My dad's phone was due for upgrade this past Monday. He has a flip phone, and wouldn't be able to handle a smart phone. The phone he has has big buttons and a screen that displays big numbers and that kind of thing. He needs to stay with it. I was trying however to figure out if I could upgrade him to a Fascinate, but put my number on it, and give him back his flip. I have an Eris, and my contract with it is due for upgrade 11-1-10. I don't think this would work because I'm still obligated to one more month of data plan on my Eris. I'm desperate to get rid of this thing though.

Doing a search here and elsewhere, I am confused -- is android 2.0 out yet? I have my HTC Hero via Sprint and the 2.0 upgrade is not yet available on their download site. I called Sprint customer service and they said it would NOT negate my Sprint support if I did an upgrade to 2.0 but they could not give me details on how or where to upgrade.

Received the upgrade from Telstra Australia today for my Desire. I'm not very good with the tech and software side of things (quite a dunce really) and have looked for a guide as to what to do prior to installing the update and also once completed. Is anyone able to steer me in the right direction as to where a good guide is or maybe a few pointers. My phone isn't rooted and is not something I want to gamble with being not techsavvy.

I'm looking into getting the Droid Incredible but had a question about all Android phones with the HTC Sense UI. I know that there is a wait for these phones to upgrade when Android has a version upgrade for their OS. If I were to remove the Sense UI from the phone would it be possible to upgrade immediately when a release is available? Take, for example, the Droid Eris. Would it be possible to disable/remove the Sense UI and install Android 2.1 and not have to wait? Or is Sense embedded in the phone to where that's not possible?

Nothing at all. No matter wether I check the box where it asks about backing up contacts.I have firmware version 2.1 at the moment and I believe the latest is 2.2

So I upgraded to 2.1 a couple of days ago and I think it's possessed my phone! My ringer keeps going off and there's no one calling. And I can't figure out how to hang up from a call now! It's also so slow when I click on someone to call. Sometimes it just sits there until it finally starts to make the call. Any suggestions? Oh and my shapewriter does not work nearly as well as it did on the 1.5. Do you think this is something that will get worked out or are we destined to deal with the bugginess of the 2.1?
