Slightly ot but does any body know if there is anyway Orange will allow me to upgrade from my Hero to the Desire early?
Can i start a new contract or maybe just pay towards the new handset??.As it is i can't do it until December but not sure i want to wait that long.

Going from a jailbroken iPhone so trying to get the general jist of how to unlock my phone and root, or maybe it's unroot my phone too.
I've heard that if the software is upgraded to the new .66 software then an unlocking code will work first time without the need to use the Madaco rom etc etc. Is this true?
Can an Orange locked Hero be upgraded using the Sync software without actually turning it on as I don't have an Orange sim card to turn it on with before unlocking it.
If i do need a sim card to upgrade to make it easier to unlock, should I just apply the Madaco rom any way as I wish to root the phone?
When searching around about getting rid of the branding on a desire everyone talks about rooting and using some other developers version of android.Is there no way to just install the proper original stock untouched virgin, HTC desire factory rom on the device. So that my device is as HTC intended.Why do i have to use some developers rom that has been messed with? Surely thats as bad as having a version that orange have butchered?Please advise.

I am not really bothered about custom ROM's or rooting. I just want to have all the features that the phone should come with, minus the Orange mods.. Is this possible firstly? If it is which guide would you recommend? Can anyone comment on the risk vs reward of doing this? I am technical enough to follow the guide but would like to make sure what I want to achieve is possible..

Orange UK have just released 2.2 and i want to get it.So my question is this, is it possible to unroot it? If it isn't. I'll get it replaced but then I would like to help the community by ripping the stock rom if that is possible.

There is no evidence of orange applications in the menu and my other vodafone sim works with it too! Is there anyway to work out whether this has the generic HTC unbranded rom or not? I've got plently of space on my SD card (over a gig), my build number is 2.73.771.73, and I've got an unlocked orange(soon to be o2) sim in it.

I've done a search but I can't find a definitive answer.I got the unlock code but it just stays on the unlocking sim screen as per buggy Orange ROM.I don't have an Orange SIM though so is it possible to unlock it without this or will I have to source a SIM?

If I do not want to root, do I just run the above EXE? Can I downgrade afterwards by just using the HTC Telstra ROM EXE? I'm not very good with the tech and software side of things (quite a dunce really) and have looked for a guide as to what to do prior to installing the update and also once completed. So I upgraded to 2.1 a couple of days ago and I think it's possessed my phone! My ringer keeps going off and there's no one calling. And I can't figure out how to hang up from a call now! It's also so slow when I click on someone to call. Sometimes it just sits there until it finally starts to make the call. Any suggestions? Oh and my shapewriter does not work nearly as well as it did on the 1.5. Do you think this is something that will get worked out or are we destined to deal with the bugginess of the 2.1?

View 15 Replies View RelatedI am toying with the idea of putting a Froyo Rom on my desire, but have several questions that aren't answered in other posts.
1. Will I need to unlock my phone before, during or after changing the Rom? I am not overly bothered by the orange stuff on my phone, but am worried about losing my WiFi connections!
2. Do I need a goldcard? Some instructions say yes, other no. None mention orange handsets specifically.
3. Which is the easiest & safest method to root my phone, if I want to put the Froyo Rom on it?
4. What if I want to change Roms - do I need to do the whole process again? I've seen something about a Rom manager, but where do you get it and how does it work?
5. Which Rom do I use? I've looked at some I'd the modacco forum ROMs, but most don't actually say what you do or don't get with them.
6. What's that difference between a2sd and a2sd+? Does it come as part of the ROM or so I news to get it separately?
The Android 2.2 Upgrade List: Phones Definitely Getting Froyo
Nexus One: Despite the shuttering of its online store, Google's flagship phone is still first in line for the Froyo upgrade. In late May, a "very limited test group" received an early copy of the 2.2 software. Google has since been working on final tweaks and expects a widespread rollout to begin soon.
Motorola Droid: The Droid that started it all is set to be second in line for the Android 2.2 upgrade. Early reports suggested the Droid could see Froyo before the end of June. We all know what happened with the Droid's 2.1 upgrade schedule, though, so don't mark your calendars just yet.
HTC Droid Incredible: HTC has confirmed that its newest Droid handset will be feasting on Froyo. No specific timeframe has been released outside of sometime "in the second half of this year."
HTC EVO 4G: The EVO 4G is the phone most frequently pitted up against Apple's new iPhone 4 (hint: the EVO wins), so it's no surprise that it's on the confirmed guest list for the latest and greatest Android release. The EVO should get Froyo sometime in the next six months.
MyTouch 3G and MyTouch 3G Slide: The entire MyTouch line of phones on T-Mobile is expected to see Froyo before the end of 2010.
HTC Desire: It's not yet available in the States, but this desirable HTC handset is on-tap to get the Android 2.2 upgrade sometime in the next six months as well.
I wanted to ask you if there are some must do's after upgrading to 2.1.Since upgrading..the phone is very laggy and sometimes the network will just drop.I won't be able to surf or use any programs that require getting on the internet.Is there something I can do now that I'm on 2.1 to restore it's speed? Should I do a reset to the phone and then upgrade to 2.1?What have you guys done to speed up the phone?

At the time I declined as I wanted to get used to the phone and avoid any issues with the Orange branded 2.2. Two days ago I decided to update, however whenever I check for updates my desire says there are no updates and that it is up to date. Has anyone else experienced this and know how I can get 2.2?

View 17 Replies View RelatedI followed the guide to the letter (gold carded) and received the Network locked screen after installing the HTC ROM ending 405.5 and receiving the updates for 2.1. By the way my Hero is Orange branded with Orange SIM and the product number is 99HHM022-00. Apart from waiting for Orange to release the update, whats my options? Read through numerous threads, but I'm confused whether an unlock code would work or whether its just better to bite the bullet and go for a Villain ROM that allows apps to install to SD cards. IF I was to go for a Villian ROM would that contain a compatible radio for my Orange phone, and would the Villain ROM work on my Orange branded Hero by just following their guide? I dont really want to have to wipe my phone again if its not going to work, so was just asking you guys for advice?

I have changed all my settings to vibrate too. Also when I go to look up a contact to send a text to someone I have double entries Sim and Phone. Does anyone know how I can get the SIM entry to disappear?

I have a Desire scheduled to arrive on Friday from Orange (their �160 cashback via Quidco really tipped the balance), but if the branding causes huge problems I might prefer to reject the phone and save myself a lot of grief.
