Android :: Contacting Market Customers
Apr 9, 2010
I have an app which relies on a 3rd party service. I usually have about a 75% retention rate and good ratings all around. The other day the service my app uses had some technical difficulties. This caused my app to FC for many users and unfortunatley those are usually the customers that rank an App. I would like to contact the customers that purchased that day to explain what the problem was. Is this allowable by Google Checkout Terms?

Once the market opens for paid apps - will we developers be able to see email addresses of paying customers? Or, will there be some other way to identify legit purchases, so, if we receive support requests via email, will there be a way to tell whether the request comes from a paying customer?

When someone bought my software on the market in my merchant accound I can see the transaction detail. In this detail I can see a strange customer's email address, something like
customer_name_jkdjdjsalkdjs...@checkout.google.com
Is this a valid email address if I need to contact the customers to tell him something?

I was interested in purchasing a shield for my droid incredible. will you be making these anytime soon? if so could you tell me when they will be for sale or notify me? contacting SGP customer service.
We are expecting it to be back in stock by end of this week, if not by early next week.
If you have any more questions, please feel free contact our customer service department again at sgpstore.com@gmail.com.
I got this reply from them but what confuses me is it says we will have them back in stock, i didn't know they ever had them in stock to begin with. must have been a typo.

In my efforts to track down a wake lock that was eating battery, I installed Network Log. I found s something a bit disturbing. WiFi Mouse by necta.us, an app in Google's app store to let your touchscreen act as a mouse, Would
A) not exit after pressing back and hitting "yes" to exit but rather,
B) continue secretly running, making occasional contact with various servers in China. Overnight it contacted 15 different IP address, all of them Whois showing as a variety of Chinese companies with different names and address blocks. Sometimes it would use port 80, usually 224, 226, 226, 227, 228, or 230. This would happen at least every 15 minutes and some of the transfsers were up to 9.7k in length. After exiting, none of the traffic was to my wifi mouse server application. Some of the IP blocks included:
119.161.221.218:226
110.173.1.68:228
42.51.12.84:HTTP
I understand there are legitimate reasons for an app to do this. Perhaps checking a license. But this is downright scary and excessive, especially since it continues after one "exits" the program. My next step will be to install shark and take a look at the packets' contents.
Edit: installed es task manager to kill it, but it's not running. Somehow it's being signaled or on a timer. Next stop is systemcleanup to take a look at its activities and permissions in detail.
Edit 2: had to force stop it, it was running but not showing up in task manager. It's permissions include reading and modifying usb storage and of course full network access.

I have a customer that needs to get their comcast email setup on Motorola Droid. This seems to be an issue. First off let me give you the settings I am using.
Incoming:
1.Customer username - does not have @comcast behind it
2.their password
3. port 110
4. mail.comcast.net
5. Security type None
Outgoing
1.smtp.comcast.net
2.587 port
3.security None
I have also tried other random settings. The best I have gotten this to work is that it receives one email at a time. A couple of minutes later you click refrest and even that message is gone.I have even tried m.comcast.net for the customer and that website shows you have 2 new mail. But after you click on it once and back out there is no way to see the messages again.

Alright, at the risk this has been discussed before, let me alert everybody that there are customers on metered data plans out there (metered as opposed to "unlimited"). This is the first time I've heard of it: http://groups.google.com/group/android-discuss/browse_thread/thread/2... So heads-up when you use wake locks to keep data connectivity alive.
I develop with such a scenario in mind, but nonetheless will include a note in my manual(s) to not use my app on a metered plan, just to err on the safe side.

Hi everyone. I am a Vodafone UK customer. I have the Xperia 10. I was told by Sony Eriksson that the upgrade for the newsystem is already available in UK but now is up to Vodafone to decide when they will release it. Vodafone told me that they have to make some adaptationsbefore releasing it but they don't have a date yet. Can anyone clarify this for me please?

I just have a quick question for the mobile gurus here. Any perspective would be much appreciated.
I am planning to renew my contract with sprint, and receive the "new every 2" credit towards my phone. I see all the madness about pre-orders in this forum... so, my question is: If I call sprint to renew my contract and order the EVO, do you think it will be available, or will the sprint rep just tell me to piss off?
Is there anyway to preorder for people who are using their "new every 2" credit? Thanks for the insight

I was looking at Google's Nexus One order page earlier today and I noticed that Google is actually recommending the EVO for Sprint customers. It makes it seem more and more likely that the EVO will be one of the first phones to get the Froyo update once it's ready for the public.

So I starting calling the corporate sprint stores in my area and I noticed they were all asking if I was an existing (EC) or new customer (NC) before telling me if evo's were available. Turns out they are lying about their evo stock to EC. They will sell you one only if you're a NC. So I called a store, and told them I was a tmobile customer. "We have 5 in stock so if you come in the next 30 minutes you can get one". Then, I told them I wanted to buy the phone outright, full retail, no line activation sprint rep told me they don't have phones in stock for me.
Immediately I called sprint customer service; they called the store. (10 min after original call). Store now says none are available, and there is a waitlist. I'm not the only one. Sprint HTC EVO 4G supplies running low, but could be higher than we think - Android and Me
Try it yourself:
Around Sunnyvale, Ca 5 of 6 stores I called asked if i was an existing customer before answering if they had it in stock. 6 store said none. 2 of 2 stores, told me they had stock, then changed tune when they found out i was an existing customer. I should have just gone to the store, waited for them to present the phone. then reveal I'm an existing customer. If they try to pull it back, then call sprint customer service.

AT&T evidently has a new campaign to get iPhone users to reduce the amount of video streaming and other data intensive activities they engage in, and may start charging them based on data use.
Their network just can't handle current data levels, and AT&T can't get it updated fast enough to handle the data requirements.
Kind of blows up the ads they've had on TV showing how great their network coverage "really is."
Already been giving my iPhone buddy a hard time showing off my Droid to him, now I'm really going to have some fun at his expense.

I have an app that was installed via Android Market. And so, the Android Market knows when new versions are out and notifies me of an update. Titanium Backup calls this the 'Market Link', not sure what else it could be called.
how would I go about 'disconnecting' the app from the Market? Deleting the market link as if it were side-loaded?
Yes, I know this means no more updates for the app etc. Which is actually what I'm after.
I'm using a SGS - DocRom V9.6 with Speedmod Kernel k13a

But my manifest has the line : <uses-sdk minSdkVersion="2" /> and I also tried even <uses-sdk minsdkversion="2" />... I try to put this line : as the first child of manifest, as the last child and also right after application.. Is there a hidden rule I don't know ...

I am developping (for my company) an app included on a project that will have 2 versions:
- 1st simple version to download using a OTA server, clients accesss to an URL to download.
- 2nd version more complex to be published on the Market.
The question here is that the process to publish on the Android Market is under bureaucratic internal process and it takes a long time, so the idea do reduce the time to market is to provide an OTA version.
There is any possibility for users that download application via OTA to upgrade the application for version published later on the Market? (Both Application will be signed with the same key).

I know my question answers but since there's a lot of you who really spend your time scrutinizing your rank, downloads and all, I'm trying it maybe someone came up with empiric science on this one :
Does anyone understood even bits of how the market ranks apps in the market ?
I usually don't look at stats but following another post on this topic, I counted my rank in my category ... 565 ... Ouch that hurts! Especially when half the apps in front of mine, are crap apps with less downloads and ratings as low as 1 star :).
Not that it would make a difference being rank 250 instead of 565...But this is humiliating a little :s
Since my app has been on the market for one month, i'm wondering if age matters ...
I know I should have asked in the market "black hole of hell " google group but the name says it all. And I'm sure some of you already figured out some of the black magic used by the Market to rank apps.

I've just noticed that the Android Market shows a blank page with the message 'No matching content in Android Market'. Yet when I go to specific sections of the Market or do a search, one is able to download and install applications and games just fine. I've only just noticed this happening in the last few days. I'm using an unlocked UK version Galaxy S but my location is Inner Mongolia, China. Would this have anything to do with Android Market not showing content on the front page? The S itself is loaded with Froyo, as downloaded from the XDA forums.

I had an edited png for the market icon in the vending apk but when I applied my edited png's to Ivans rom with the market fix it seems to have changed the icon back to the original market Icon. When I first loaded the rom it showed my edited png for the market icon but after my first reboot it seems to change the icon back to the original. I assume that the market is updating upon reboot so I pulled the vending apk off my phone and my edited png's are still there but its still showing the original market icon. Anybody else with an edited market icon notice this or any ideas of why its going back to original? I have tried this a couple times and it always updates after first reboot...
