Android : Can I Install Any App On Phone?
Jun 14, 2010
I didn't find any other thread with help, and I'm sorry if this has been covered before. I'm an Android noob and thinking about buying an Android phone. The model I'm interested in is the Lenovo LePhone which runs Android 1.6. The model I saw in the shop had a very branded version of Android and it was all in Chinese (but I can change the language to English). I saw there's even a small intro of the phone here. The fancy keyboard does not come with the phone and has to be bought separately and it's not available at the moment. I was told that it runs on Android 1.6, not 2.1. My question is, can I install any app for Android 1.6 on that device or will there be restrictions because it's a Chinese version?

So the other day I went to download an app out of the market. The download finished, but it seems my phone decided to auto-reboot itself in the midst of the installation. After the reboot completes, I go back to the market, reselect the app, and it's hung at "Installing..." (And when I say "hung," the market is still fully functional except that one app). I'm given no option to cancel the installation. Killing the market app then trying to go back in has no effect - same deal. Hung on install. Another reboot didn't help.
Is there any way to delete the install package and make the market forget I even tried in the first place?
It's Angry Birds (wanted to see what all the fuss was about), but the install seems to have failed in a way that any app install could have failed.

I've just knocked together my first app, have released and signed it and transferred to my phone, but cannot get it to install on my phone - after going through the screen saying 'Do you want to install this application' and clicking install, I just get a message saying 'Application not installed' with no further explanation. I had checked the signing using jarsigner -verify.

I have an application that can run all by itself, but certain activities can be called using intents from outside the application.Lately, I've been using a little test app I built to try this out, and any time I change the code in my main application, I have to run it, close it, then run the test app.Not too big a deal, really.Still, I'm curious to find out if there's a way to just install new code without having the app launch on the phone.

Folks, apologies ... I have a very urgent request. Tomorrow I want to present an Android application on the phone (not on the emulator) to a group of students. I have a Samsung Galaxy running on Android 1.5. I got it all hooked up and I can see the device using "adb devices". I can also see it in DDMS. So the connection is fine. I even can install the application on the device - but I cannot run it. The main problem seems to be that my application cannot access the corresponding local SQLite database. Everything works perfectly on the emulator. I figured out that I also cannot access the data/data folder on the devices. It says "permission denied". Then I found out that I have to "root" the device. But absolutely no clue how I can do that. Also installing the apk through "adb install ...." did not work. What can I do in order to get my SQLite db on the device? Do I have to root it?

How to manually install Android 2.2 on your Nexus One. Apparently at some point last night a very select few Nexus One owners started getting the Android 2.2 update OTA. So if patience is one of your major virtues you should feel free to hold out for that update notification to hit; if on the other hand you would rather just go ahead and get your Froyo on now just follow the directions below.

I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice for my possible plan of grabbing a fairly cheap (under 120 so I think that's about $180) HTC handset, preferably with a good size screen as I like to spend far too long online on my current phone (!), and install Android on it!
So... how easy is this? Is there a recommended phone or small range of phones within my price bracket? And... are there disadvantages, and do I get automatic updates and stuff? I'm a fairly heavy medium-term Linux and Ubuntu user but this is my first adventure with Android!

Android 2.2 allow users install the app on SDcard. Developer could set the android:installLocation ="internalOnly" to install the app to internal memory. But I found that the user could also use the "adb install -s " command to install the app on the Sdcard. Are there anyone know how to force the app installed on internal memory? Another question is: are there any API support to find the locatin where the app is installed?

With a few thousand customers, only 2 have complained of this problem. They install the app, then put the phone in standby/sleep mode (i.e. turning it off, but not shutting it down). When they turn it back on, my app's icon is reverted to the generic green and white android icon and the title shows as the class name of the app instead of the title. And, of course, the app no longer works. I am at a loss as to what to do. It seems like an android bug to me. And I think both customers are using a Motorola Droid. Anybody else heard of this? I am not sure what to search for on Google.

I think this phone is the best one on the market regarding hardware, but I am a bit concerned about its software.
I have a N1 and if I can put Froyo (when Froyo gets released) without all that crap Samsung adds up to it I'd buy one.
Even better if I could have Cyanogen 6 (which will probably be based on Froyo).
So, any news about rooting this phone?
