Android :: Better Keyboard Usage / Multiple Letters
Nov 28, 2009
I love Better Keyboard, but have an annoying problem I can't figure out. When I am typing I must hit something periodically that makes the keyboard letters show multiple letters on each key. How the heck do I turn this off? What am I hitting by mistake that turns it on?

I have an HTC Magic running 1.6, but this has been happening since I've had the phone. Basically, when using the default keyboard (which, incidentally, seems tonnes better since the update - it's made me not care that HTC IME doesn't work) it'll sometimes miss usually two key presses. And the phone physically recognizes then, because they pop up above my finger, but they never appear in the text entry field. It's bizarre - does it happen to anyone else, and does anyone else know how to fix it? (Incidentally, does anyone else regularly hit the key instead of space bar by accident. It annoys the piss out of me.)

Has anyone had any problems with the droid's pull-out keyboard repeating certain letters? At first I thought it was just a user error, but over the last few weeks it's been getting more and more apparent. e.g. While trying to type "inside" it will instead type "inside" or instead of "tomorrow" it will type "tomorrow".

I've had my Droid since June of 2010 and up until a few days ago the keys have started to stick. Pretty much when I press down on them they stick for a split second and spring back up making a click noise each time I click on certain keys (Almost all of them). Not many of the keys are giving me double letters when I type due to this but some are. I called Verizon about it they want to troubleshoot the issue and I have no problem with doing that, I just will do it later at home since I am out now. So what do you guys think..? Should I replace it or keep using it some more see if the sticking stops? I really REALLY hate to replace my Droid seeing as it's new fresh out of the box and I've had no other problems with it.

The "Next" key seems to move to the next item that could interact with the keyboard.
The "Done" key is less clear to me. It sends in a KeyEvent.KEYCODE_ENTER event. Is it possible to distinguish this event from the down-and- left-arrow key that also sends in a KeyEvent.KEYCODE_ENTER? It appears that you get either but not both "Done" or down-and-left-arrow buttons on the soft keyboard.
Am I missing some documentation about this?
Is it "good UI" to have the "Done" key execute the action that would normally be done on an "OK" button? E.g. for a username and password dialog that has two text fields and an OK button the user touches the username field, gets the soft keyboard, types, presses "Next", types, presses "Done" and the dialog submits the username and password and goes away.
Or is it "good UI" to force the user to explicitly touch the OK button? Possibly having to also manually dismiss the soft keyboard if it covers up the OK button.

I need to type in both Swedish and English and the one thing I miss from my "other" phone is the easy switch of the keyboards while texting. I could text in both languages just by touching a button. With the Galaxy I have to go out of sms, go into settings and change the typing language. Is there an application or an installation to have multiple keyboards? Granted I could just type in English with the Swedish keyboard but then the spell check is in Swedish

i'm pretty happy with the stock keyboard on my HTC DESIRE but i get really annoyed that there is no fast key for switching between the input language. i live in sweden and write often in either swedish or english and would like a keyboard that has a button on it somewhere for fast switching between these two languages.
as it is now, i go into options and select the language which is not so bad to do once a week but its a pain when your switching 10 times a day. and why do reviewers say the android keyboard is no good and always praise the iphone one? is the stock keyboard really that bad? whats a good alternative?

The home screen of my Android application has three EditText views, meant to be used as three different search functions, each with a "Search" button. The app works perfectly on the device (G1) when using the trackball: I can move between the EditTexts with the trackball, all the events fire as expected, I can enter text using the physical keyboard in the selected EditText, Enter correctly submits the proper search, etc.
However, I can't switch between the EditText views using touches - only by using the trackball. Touches seem to be completely ignored by the EditText. Touches do fire for the buttons, but very hard - takes a lot of tries to make a touch register. In the simulator, clicking on any EditText does nothing - the first one always remains selected, and I never get a soft keyboard. This is all inside a TabHost - I've read there are some problems with that configuration, but it sounds like a slightly different issue (the EditText doesn't seem to lose focus - everything works perfectly with the trackball).

My phone is the Droid X.
1. The main thing is that my texts won't send anymore when I turn my screen off or even exit out of the text message window. I have to keep my phone on and on that screen for at least 5 minutes until it finally sends. Before this, I could just text, send it, turn my screen off, and put it in my pocket and not worry about it sending. With my job and my life, I can't be doing this. I need a fix for this if possible.
2. This problem isn't as big as the other two but someone will send me one text and I will receive 2-6 times. I'll either receive all of them at once, or I will receive one text, and then 5 minutes later get it again, and then again 5 more minutes, and so on and so on. Now this can get very annoying when I am quickly texting and I keep getting texts like 15 times. I need a fix for this as well if possible.
3. One of the most annoying things about all this is my keyboard is not typing. I'll click on the "insert message here" box and start typing but the letters won't appear. The word suggestions will appear and whatnot acting like I am typing but it won't. My only temporary solution to this is exiting out and going back into the text but it doesn't seem to actually work as I am finding myself sitting there for about 10 minutes exiting and entering back into the texts over and over.

I don't know if it's my phone or what but when I look up the Other Usage on my phone, it shows it "Running" more than 2/3 of the time. And on Network Usage, "Android System" and "Media" use a great deal of the phone as well.I think this might have to do with my "android.process.acore" crashing every once in a while when it's asleep. Based on everyone's feedback I might have to return the Moment for a third time.

As you know, you can't have capital letters in your image filenames that you use in your Android project (Ressource/Drawables folder). I've got hundreds of small images (GOOG.GIF as an exemple) that I need to import into my project (I usually do a simple drag and drop from a desktop folder into Eclipse). How do I quickly change all the filenames (replace all capital letters to lower case) before importing into my project?

Probably as many others i decided to move on from i phone platform to android and bought a new Desire 2 days ago and trying to catch up with it. I am generally very impressed with the device except 1 critical issue I'm having: When typing very fast in the keyboard, the keyboard gets lost completely, i am very fast typing person and do a lot of emails I'm text etc. I can see when typing that random letters kick in the text. I did a test by fast typing letters A-L to see exactly and a random latter like G, F being inserted without my interaction while I'm pressing only A and L. This is mostly happening in vertical mode. Landscape is much better Can someone tell me what is going on please? I did calibration many times and no result. I downloaded keyboards from the Market - nothing. I goggled the web for something - nothing there. Has some came across this issue? it is so frustrating and if i don't find solution how to fix it i will have to return it to a shop.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S. When I am making a call, the dial pad contains buttons with a number and three to four letters. However, while I am in a call and that I hit the "dialpad" button to show the dial pad, it contains the same buttons but without the letters. This is embarrassing when you need to type a password or a name.So the two questions are:
1. Is there a way to get the letters to show on the dial pad during a call?
2. Is this a Samsung or Android bug?
