Android :: Apps For Day To Day Activities / Allow Wife To Track My Location?
Nov 7, 2010
I have a stock rooted Motorola Droid, with OpenHome and not much else. What apps should I have on there for day to day activities?
Also I am going on a trip Monday to a remote area of California to hand my mothers estate. Is there any app that I can install that would allow my wife to track my location. Either via the web or from her Blackberry.

Is anyone using AdMob analytics to track location and events in their app? I haven't been able to find any Android relevant info for the (AdMob) analytics side of things. Can someone please point me in the right direction? Alternatively, what are you using to track location and event data?

We each have Droid X's now. We'll go to a mall, or large superstore, and my wife will jst wander away, attracted by bright colors, or shiny objects.
I tried the latitude app that came with the DX, but its accuracy isn't so hot.
Is there an app that wll show you how far another phone is, and what direction?
(Latitude said that I was 1/2 mile away, when in fact I was standing right next to her.)
The spoken directions for her to get to me were a hoot though!

Is there a way to get a list of all apps and their activities and intent filters? Basically, I'd like to know what another app is "listening to" so I can provide an Intent that matches. (I suppose that this will require an ADP, which is fine).
I tried grabbing the AndroidManifest.xml from an .apk file in /data/ app, but that didn't seem to work - I ran jar -xf on the apk, but the xml wasn't plain ASCII.

I am trying to understand the interactions among apps, processes, activities, and tasks. After reading 'Application Fundamentals' many times, I wrote a tiny piece of code with three different activities.
Here's my manifest file:
CODE:....
The AppRootActivity starts ChildActivityOfRoot which in turn starts SingleTaskActivity.
Since 'SingleTaskActivity' is marked with 'singleTask' launchMode I expected two different tasks with the following activity sets: Task1 --> AppRootActivity - ChildActivityOfRoot Task2 --> SingleTaskActivity
However, I was surprised to see all three activities running in the same task. This doesn't change even if I use Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK flag in the intent used to activate 'SingleTaskActivity'. I use the getTaskId() to determine the task the activity is running.
IMO this behavior is not at all apparent from the documentation.

a question for MIUI users: how do you organize your apps? I'm loving the ROM, but I'm having trouble keeping track of my apps. The ROM lacks an app, tray, correct?

Tried to dig deeper into where and when apps are accessing your data networks regardless of whether it was while you are on wifi or mobile networks. I'm rooted running 4.1.1 and I'm looking for an app that sort of works like a proxy except for my own phone and just my phone's data. The goal is to see which apps are accessing the internet and what websites they are accessing and how often, ect. Basically I'd like to eavesdrop on my own apps. Is that possible? How can I do this?

My wife's name is Marilyn. Not Maryland. No, I don't want to send a text to the state of Maryland. Or call the state. :0)
Is there a way to "train" Android to associate a certain spoken word with a certain result?
Oh, and it can't get "U2" or "REM" right either! I have been messing around with the new voice commands (after downloading the app and widget replacement), and I figured these would be popular enough (although oddly spelled) to be configured in. It got the Beatles, though!

My Background. Currently I am a .NET Developer working mainly with databases. Taking an interest in Android development by creating my first app. To understand it all, I am just trying to create a data collection application.
For example, collecting user information. My main activity will show a list of users and a button to add a new user. So, I created a new activity for the add a new user form.
I am using eclipse, with the normal AVD (ARM (armeabi-v7a)). I can successfully take the user to the add new form, no real issues with that. However, when I run the app in the AVD, I see my main activity (or the actual app) and the add new user activity as an app.
Is there some way to define the main activity for the app?

I write Windows/iPhone/Android apps that mostly display large documents (HTML) in an HTML container view. What is a good strategy to determine where in a document the users has scrolled to so that when the app runs again, it goes to that location in the HTML document? ll of my software can 'listen' to javascript. Is there a way to find in a HTML page, perhaps with javascript, where the visible section is?

Based on what I've been reading, leaving GPS on won't drain more battery. It's just merely allowing apps to use the GPS.That said, if you have GPS on and have apps that use GPS, you will drain more battery.I want to leave my GPS on for "Where's my Droid." My question is this: how do I make it so that apps (weather widget, etc.) only use network location and not GPS? Is there a way to block all apps except those I choose from using GPS ?

I'm developing a mapping app using Eclipse 3.5.I'm setting the minimum update period with the LocationManager's requestLocationUpdates method, via a configuration activity. When I set the property I see in Logcat that the system process sets the value OK.When I actually send a new location from the DDMS emulator control and the location changes on the map view, I see that the system process then sets the minimum time to zero.Below is a capture of the system's log messages. You can see that I'm setting the period to 32 seconds, then 16, then, after I've sent a simulated location change the system sets it to zero. The map responds to location changes to location changes instantly even if they are sent only a couple of seconds apart.

In my application I have to fetch the current location. First it correctly fetches the location. But we are moving from the current location to some other location. It shows the previous address. It is not updating the location. My code is: locManager = (LocationManager)getSystemService(Context.LOCATION_SERVICE); locListener = new MyLocationListener();locManager.requestLocationUpdates(LocationManager .GPS_PROVIDER ,0,0,locListener); location = locManager.getLastKnownLocation(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER);if(location != null){latitude = location.getLatitude();longitude = location.getLongitude();} Please find the mistake and when i launch first time it is not working on second time itself it is working so check this thing also.

I have an application which uses the network as the location provider (rather than GPS eg.), however I can't seem to figure out how to send the emulator test coordinates. In DDMS I would usually send coordinates in the Emulator Control tab.Is there a place to simulate coordinates derived from the cell phone network provider?
