Android :: Stop Piracy Of Apps
May 4, 2010I've spent the last few weeks developing a new tool to stop piracy of my paid apps on the Android Market. In a nutshell, licensing is tied directly to purchase verification. There is no license server to manage, no key for the user to enter. User experience is basically uninterrupted from normal application purchase.
I'm excited about this, as my paid apps are now reaching piracy rates as high as 90% on some days,with the average somewhere around 75%. For pirated apps, purchase verification (and subsequently licensing) will fail after a certain number of attempts, and pirates will be left with anything from a "buy me" nag, to a disabled app (behavior is configurable).
Android Market is the only supported purchase validation target so far. Others will be forthcoming if demand warrants.
This isn't a perfect solution (I have yet to find a perfect licensing solution), but I feel it is the best balance of security, features, and workflow that I've seen to date.

Android :: Droid Apps That Are Not Suffering From Massive Piracy?

Are there any popular android apps that are not suffering from massive piracy?
I had a quick hunt around and could see that MyBackup Pro asks for a Google Checkout number and Copilot also requires a code on starting up.
Maybe there's something we can all learn by seeing how other app developers are dealing with this issue.
Does anyone know how effective these measures are? Has anyone seen any other techniques that have worked.
Its getting very tiring reading how pirates feel they have some right to steal apps from hard-working devs.

Feb 2, 2010I am under the impression that android apps can require other apps to be installed in other to operate.The main example I know is the zxing barCode scanner app, which gets used by a number of other apps.The zxing barcode app is free, but I was wondering what would happen if it wasn't?In particular, what would the user experience be like?How would they be notified, if at all, about the paid app requirement?

Oct 14, 2009I am no security expert and have not thought this out all the way, but could a workable solution to the pirating problem be something like this:
1. The market clients (like Google Market, AndAppStore, SlideME) could record on their servers some kind of identifier about who bought the app and perhaps what Android device it was bought for. They already capture the who information.
2. Android apps that care can, on first launch, ask the user about their identifier and what service they bought the app from.
3. The app, or the servers that support the app, can query, via http, the market client service to ask did so-and-so get this app from you?
4. If an affirmative response can be had then the app is not pirated. Otherwise the app is pirated
Google Market, AndAppStore, SlideME, etc... will need to make such a service available, via http.
It would be straight-forward to generate a list of installed market clients for the user to select from. The market clients may even be able to supply the user identification so user does not need to enter it.
The application could retrieve from its servers the list of market clients is believes are legitimate in order to prevent the bogus clients from spoofing it.
If you installed an app w/out a market client and the app did not intend for such an installation to happen, like on rooted phones using adb, then the app is pirated.
And finally, could this process be invisible to the user and just involve communication between the app and installed market clients and the market clients servers and the apps servers?

Feb 1, 2009I believe I have been quite reasonable, patiently waiting for you to deploy the paid application solution. I adopted Android early, took many punches and setbacks each time you rolled out a new SDK making major changes to the API. Now I am frustrated with how you are handling this situation. Everyday more and more applications hit the market for "free", in effect watering down the market and reducing my chance of making money on your platform.Does this sound greedy? Perhaps, but this is the real world. If I can't support my development by selling my product, I can't feed my family. Looks like it is back to the iPhone and the new Blackberry store.

Jul 19, 2010The X is my first Android phone, and I am loving it. Night and day difference from the Storm I had. I have installed some free apps from the market. I am, however, unable to install any paid apps. I have tried a couple different ones so far. One was Beautiful Widgets and the other was Tapa talk. After selecting the Buy Now button, it prompts you to log in to your Google account. I do this and then it asks what you want to sync, not sure why that comes up. But then after selecting next, it just goes right back to the app with the Buy Now option. Anyone else seen this that can tell me what I am doing wrong?

Dec 24, 2009I have been looking around for a solution but didnt find one. I have some paid apps that I got on the Android Market. They were TERRIBLE. I uninstalled them and am now trying to get them to get off my "My Downloads" section of the android market. I know that free apps are supposed to go away after time but that isnt always happening. Oct 13, 2009I have a Vodafone NZ 'Google Experience' HTC Magic.This phone was released in NZ back in late July, but as of yet we still have no access to paid apps in the Android Market.It would appear we are not alone, as posts to the market help forum reveal similar concerns for the likes of Switzerland, Australia, South Africa, Brazil, Israel, Czech Republic and mainland China.Now in and of itself I can accept a delay while all the nuts and bolts of international tax laws etc are worked out, but what is particulalrly galling here is the total lack of information on what is going on.Locally, vodafone are polite but basically seem as much in the dark as I am. This seems strange given that Vodafone group obviously have a worldwide agreement with Google to market the Magic as a 'Google Experience' product.Google simply don't respond personally on the forum and the only help comes from forum long timers who link to a page on the market site that is completely out of date - it has had the same typos for months!
As far as I can work out, availability of paid apps to customers seems to be somehow coupled to whether developers in your country can submit paid apps to the market at large. I'm sure there is a reason for this, but it seems pretty weird, given that Google Checkout works in NZ already.If Google are serious about taking on the iPhone store, then they really need to address this urgently, crippling their users by only allowing distribution of paid apps in half a dozen (mostly European) markets is crazy - especially given the enormous potential of markets like China, which doesn't have the iPhone.The other worrying aspect is the lack of professionalism in the handling of this by whoever is responsible for the Market project. If Google wants to play with the big boys then they need to start behaving like grown-ups and take some lessons in customer service.

I've bought a few apps I no longer want/need and would be willing to sell them to someone else at a discount to recoup some of my loss.Any thoughts on this? I think it would need to be an update to the android market to have an option to 'transfer' to another user so updates for the app would show up in the market. You could keep the developers happy by giving them an option to make their apps eligible for this or not.I suppose this would only be feasible for apps that are also the type that are private and can't be backed up to the SD card with something like Astro File Manager.
