Android :: Applications On Phone Vs. SD Card
Oct 15, 2010
I have a Droid X running 2.2. I'm trying to understand the advantages of storing apps on the SD Card vs Phone storage. Since the Droid X comes with 8GB of phone storage, I've got lots of room there. What would be some reasoning behind moving apps to the SD card? I see lots of people get excited when a favorite app adds SD card support, but why exactly? Maybe it's more of an advantage for phones with less phone storage? Also, how come in manage applications, it says that the app takes up way less space when it's on the SD Card? For example, I just installed Angry Birds and it put itself on the SD Card when it installed. It showed 1.83MB in size. When I moved it to the SD Card, it showed 14.06MB.

I did a few searches and couldn't find anything, so I decided to be lazy and start a new post on this. Has anyone found an application that will move all applications to the SD card to save phone space and speed everything else up?

My problem is that when I install any app from google play, it installs on internal storage. If I want to move it to sd card, the only option available is move to phone storage. I have selected SD Card as default write disk.

I have a rooted Sprint Hero and I'd like to save and run apps off of my 16gb class 6 SD card while running the factory ROM. Is this possible? If so how can I do so. If not, I'm willing to flash to a different ROM, what's a good stable one?

Does all apps etc get saved by default to the phone memory or the SD card?? Also, when I plug in via the USB cable and want to transfer some videos and photos across from my old phone, are they saved to the SD card? Is there any way of checking what is saved to where?

So with the last few ROMs I've had installed, I've tried moving apps to the sdcard. I figured it would be a good thing, even if I wasn't running out of room. Every time I move more than just a few apps to the sdcard, my whole phone starts getting laggy. I just moved all of my apps back to phone and the "lagginess" is gone. I currently have UD8.0 installed, but it has behaved this way with LFY and Pete's BB ROMs as well. So it doesn't seem to be a ROM related.

What's the deal with this? It appears that only some apps can be moved to the SD card. I have been using ApptoSD which works fine but only works on a few apps. Why won't it work with everything? I keep running out of space on my phones memory and would love to move the bulk of my apps to the SD card.

I hope you guys can implement that in the next android updates. It is really cool that all the applications are free, but the G1 phone doesn't have a lot of on board memory, so please implement the feature to install applications on the SD Card. That is the only comment I have. A lot of people are Jailbreaking their phones just so they can get to that feature. Please consider it. Thank you. One more thing-If you can make it possible to save the browser cache data on the SD card as well will be awesome.

Thinking of buying a new micro SD card for my phone. As in can I drag and drop copy the entire contents of my old micro SD card into my computer, then drag and drop copy the entire contents into a new micro SD card, and the applications will still work fine? I worry because google might have implemented something to prevent this as a piracy protection measure.

I have a Motorola Droid, it is not rooted and I am currently in a deployed location and have no service/access to any networks. My phone got a little wet, but still works for the most part and I want to factory reset it without losing my apps/music/contacts/pictures etc. Is there a way to move all of this stuff to the SD card using and explorer straight from the phone without using a computer? I am out of options.

I only heard about this today from a telus rep. I thought apps were saved to internal when that was full it moved to sd automatically. No it only goes to internal memory DANG! so that means i can only have a few downloaded at a time. Whats the solution? Will 2.2 fix it? I heard 3.0 will?

Can someone please tell me how to install apps directly onto the microSD card? Even brand new the HTC Desire seems to only have 100MB to download and install applications on so I find it much more sense being able to store and install them on a 32GB microSD card. My internal memory is full now and I barely have any apps installed on it yet have about 900 applications I can install so I at least want to put more on!

Anyway, we all got 2.2 now and can "move apps to the SD" card. I presume one might want to move apps to the SD card to "free up some space" but is that the ONLY reason to move the apps to the card?? Is anyone NOT WAITING until space on the phone is an issue and moving the apps to the card right now?? Are there certain apps that are recommended to be on the phone for proper/faster performance? (I know this was an issue with the Palm Centro I used to have where certain apps HAD TO reside on and launch from the phone)?? What are the general pros/cons (if any, besides "saving space," perhaps regarding performance or other concerns) with leaving apps on the phone vs. the SD card?

Is there a way to move my apps from my internal storage to my sd card. My phone is rooted but don't know what to do past that. Also, I have overclock to speed phone up but when I set min and max to higher settings after I. Save and exit it goes back to exsiting. I tried to find on here but I'm getting overwhelmed with a whole lot of talk that I do not quite get.
