Android :: Application To Locate / Remotely Lock Phone?
Sep 17, 2010
I had a scare today where I left my phone at the gym and thought I had lost it. Whats a good app to locate the phone remotely? (preferably works with GPS AND cell tower location, because I don't have GPS on most of the time.) It would be nice to be able to remotely lock it as well... looks like there are some options available but I'm not sure which one works. The thing with the app store is that you can't sort by reviews, its hard to tell which app is good and which one doesn't work

Is there an app that can remotely wipe or lock your phone if it is lost or stolen ? There is all kinds of apps to locate it thru GPS, but if you don't have a signal it`s no good. I would rather wipe it and get a new one rather than have someone else looking thru my contacts.

I lost my phone last night, and I had wavesecure on it, but I haven't been able to locate it or even lock it! but I know the battery was really low. Does wavesecure not work if it's uncharged? Anyway, I'm still on contract, but no insurance. Is there any way to still somehow locate my phone using wavesecure?

I went through a dozen of websites and apps description on the net to find a tutorial or explanation about how to install and setup an android app to control your pc remotely (gmote, phonemypc, rdp,). But without success. Is there any (complete and working) tutorial somewhere?
The problems & open topics are:
- usually if you have XP home you are stuck because there is no remote desktop (only for XP professional and upper versions). Nevertheless, when reading comments of people who have tried one of these apps, it looks like that a lot of XP home users have successfully installed the app. How? Mystery.
- the IP address: there are either tutorials with an 198.168.x.x IP address or with an Y.Y.Y.Y IP.
If you have an 198. IP, then you are local and probably by WiFi. What is the point of using WiFi at home to control your PC? Are you too lazy to stand up and go to it?
And if you use a "showmyip.com" website to get your network IP, the apps (sofar for me) could never connect to the server on the PC with this IP. So does anyone know how to solve this point? (ports are open, no firewall issue). Finally I need an install tutorial to be able to control my PC with an app (free possibly) with detailed steps and IP/setup examples.

I want to write an Android remote control application that allows people to navigate back and forth on a PowerPoint slideshow presentation in Microsoft Office (preferably 2007/2010) on my PC. In this case, I have to make a small PowerPoint navigation client on the Android, and also I have create a PC server to access Microsoft Office PowerPoint and manipulate its slideshow. I know it is possible for a java application to gain access to Microsoft Office PowerPoint's slideshow. Some applications for Android are already made (Gmote 2.0 and such) and they can be used to navigate PowerPoint slideshows. Is there any extension or any library that can be used to gain access to Microsoft Office PowerPoint?

Is there an app/widget out there that will allow my to instantly manually lock my phone? I know I can change the security settings in Froyo to where it locks when the display is off, meaning I could use the power button on my Droid X, but I don't want it to lock every time the screen dims. In other words I want:
a) phone locks on a timed basis (say, 10, 15, 20 minutes of inactivity)
b) phone locks when I tell it to via app/widget
I tried searching for such an app/widget but most of what I found was just enhancements for the lock screen or replacements that didn't address this problem.

Is there any kind of app that can locate other Android phones? Like, maybe run the app on both phones, then have it show up on the maps, so we could find each other using GPS? Me and my friend go in the trails around my house a lot, and our phones are very accurate for where we are, so we're not worried about the accuracy of the GPS, as we know how it is already.

I recently lost my phone, and had an app on it that texted me the location. Unfortunately I was overseas and didn't get the phone back, but it was a good little app - but for the life of me I can't remember the name of it or find it in the market.
The exact fucntionality was that when a different sim card is put in the phone, it preiodically sends you 3 texts with the location of the phone by cell tower, GPS and another (WPS I think?) format. So you get a rough location and also the phone number of the person with the phone. Handy...
Anyone got an idea of what this app was called? It's not Wavesecure, Lookout (which totally failed to locate the phone or restore the backups - rubbish), Where's My Droid...
As I say, done an extensive web and market search and can't find it anywhere..

I'd like to connect to my girlfriend's phone (she's currently thousands of miles away) to be able to help her with stuff on her phone (customizing it, help with learning how to do stuff). Is there an app that allows you to remotely connect to another person's phone and manipulate the interface using your own phone or a PC? We use a program called Crossloop to do it for PC stuff, connecting her computer to me via the internet so I can do tech support type stuff on her computer as if I was there. I'm hoping there's something similar for Android. Yes I know she should learn on her own, but she's stubborn.

I have some pretty sensitive data on my phone and I'd be nervous if I lost it. I use SplashID, but since my Gmail is on there, that would be bad if it fell into the wrong hands. Is there an App to remotely erase all my data? Or, what about an App that can remotely sign out of Gmail? That would be ideal. I use the "pattern password thing (touch password)", but just in case someone cracks that I want to be able to remotely log out of Gmail. Can I do that?

Is there an app that you would install on Tablet to run as service (and so small footprint), then you access a web page from PC or other device over internet, click a button and that takes screenshot of whatever there is on the Tablet with the server installed, downloads it and displays in a window in the browser?
So it doesn't need to stream or allow for remote control, only take screenshot of remote tablet and view it locally.Since ICS has screenshot feature built in, maybe it wouldn't even require root?

I'm looking for an app that'll help me find my phone via GPS without always having to have GPS enabled. I have Wave Secure and it doesn't have an option to turn my GPS on remotely, Lookout Mobile Security is the same way and Where's My Droid app requires GPS to be previously enabled.
The Internet location ability's accuracy within 200-1000ft radius doesn't seem useful if my phones stolen. I don't think walking from door to door, trying to listen in on each house for my alarm would work out too well.
Any app that could turn my GPS on remotely via codeword text or Internet site would be extremely useful.

Is there a way to have a phone lock on the Desire, in the way it is used on "normal" phones? What I mean is that I need a phone lock for security reasons - however it is a pain to use it every time I turn the screen on. Is there a way to have it work only when you turn the phone on? Right now if yu don't have a phone/screen lock security set if someone steals your phone they take out the sim card and use the phone normally ... if you do have it, then you must use the password every time you want to use the phone (I hate it). I know the best thing is to have a secured access but I was just wandering if it was possible to do seomething different?

So my need is a lock screen replacement application that requires you to type in a password (numerical or letters) doesn't matter. I just hate the swipe to unlock and the tap home to unlock on the Samsung Moment. I don't care about looks so much I just want a functioning app to do what I ask.

We are writing our own application to substitute G1 standard screen lock (where you have to draw a pattern between the dots on the screen). Unfortunately, I have been unable to find documents on how to hook our application in, so that it would be called instead of the standard G1 screen lock. Is there a broadcast sent when the standard lock is activated?
