Android :: App That Would Work Only With Gps?
Jul 2, 2010
I'm looking for a app that would work only with the gps, not 3g
So that it could work were there is no coverage
What i need is it to use gps to fix latitude and longitude positions and so that it could record positions and show me the direction to a direction i enter using Lat.and Long.
If its of any relevance i need it to work on a motorola Milestone/ european droid

I'm searching for android phones that can use video out to the tv for a research project. I'm considering the HTC Touch Pro.
Is there anything I have to do specifically to get the video out to work (for displaying my app on the tv)? or will the phone just display a running app on the tv without extra work?

I have google voice and use it for every phone call I make. I heard that there were issues with several gvoice updates, so I haven't updated google voice since 0.2.8 and it is working just fine- every call connects, no problems. Is it worth updating to the newest version of google voice with push? For those of you with 2.1 on your Eris- does google voice work for you?

I'm trying to determine whether or not my phone is defective, or if this is a current problem with the Cliq.
Of the apps I've downloaded, only a few of them have worked. Of those few that work, some don't work right. Has anyone had problems with these apps crashing on them, or just not working correctly?
- Nice Battery (see description at bottom of: My Ultimate CLIQ settings (so far))
- WeatherBug (kept showing the wrong location, crashed when trying to change location)
- Snake - doesn't work just says its "paused"
- RingDroid - crashes when I select the "Facebook Pop" button
- Layar - screen is rotated 90 degrees at all times
There have been others, but usually I just uninstall them right after discovering it doesn't work right.

I've had an HTC Desire on Orange in the UK for about 6 weeks and it is having persistent problem. Firstly despite having a strong 4-bar out of 4 signal, online services and the internet do not work at all when a 3G signal is being received (e.g. news, weather, all widgets, internet, email etc).Calls and texts do work however with a 3G signal.But when a 3g+ signal (HSDPA) is being received, all internet services as above work fine.However, when a 3+ signal is being received, the phone does not make or receive calls or text messages, and often fails to send texts. Calls I make immediately shut down (bleep + call ended), and incoming calls from other people go straight to answerphone. Also often when turning the data connection on/off, it freezes and has to be rebooted, and turning airplane setting on and off does not fix the problem.
I have also tried the different network settings (GSM, WCDMA, auto, etc). GSM sends and receives calls and texts but doesnt work (or is incredibly slow) with internet, and auto and WCDMA only show the problems as above.I don't think this is a network/coverage issues as, as I have seen many people reporting these same issues on other networks and in other parts of the UK, and I have read that other people are having to manually turn off HSDPA to be able to make calls (using an app?). Even if I can stop HSDPA from connecting to make sure the phone works, I still cant use the internet at all on 3g even GSM works better!
Finally, when I connect to a bluetooth device (e.g. car and headphones) the phone will connect briefly, and then randomly disconnect. I have also seen this issue reported elsewhere.I very much like the phone and don't want to get rid of it, but these problems are making the phone unuseable.Also I don't know if I should be contacting HTC or Orange about this. Will the upcoming Android 2.2 fix these problems?Anyone know how to fix this or if I need a new handset? Are there any apps that can help? Also does the Nexus One have these problems and are they fixed by Froyo?

I have so far found two bugs in Galaxo 1.6.3:
a) Speaker doesn't work in call (very weak). works well in ringtones etc.
b) Scrolling contacts by letter doesn't work.
Other than that this is a leap forward, especially with the overclock options!
Both bugs, as well as others, fixed in 1.6.3.1 update!

I dont get it how is that sharing when you can see videos only on qik.com/XYXYXY website ?

So here's my situation: I work at a calling center where internet access is blocked off. I have my own cubicle and get my own computer But they have blue coat Web filter And i lack Administrative So i can install only very limited programs. I've tried starling the android sdk But to no avail. I've thought about tethering too but i'm not sure if that will work Since i don't know if a computer.can maintain more than 1 internet connection. Basically i can't have my phone out while at work, so i need to figure out a way to use my phone to browse the internet on my computer screen without being obvious.

I could not get Astro to work, so I went w/ Estrongs F/E. This works great! Done a scan, found my desk top, viewed all files and folders that I wanted to...BUT cannot open any document. Word, Excel, PDF, MP3, etc. Everytime I click on the files it says "Sorry, No Application Installed." I can open these types of files if they are attached to an email, but not in Es File Explorer.

I'm on Mac OS X Leopard and installed the ADT plugin into Eclipse Galileo. I followed all these steps to get started:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
My SDK version is 2.2 API 8 revision 2 and I just used the Hello World tutorial found here:
[url]
When I first created the Android application, I saw this error in the Eclipse console:
[2010-11-13 18:20:43 - HelloAndroid] ERROR: Unable to open class file / Users/mydirectory/Documents/workspace/HelloAndroid/gen/com/example/ helloandroid/R.java: No such file or directory
I commented out this line to fill in the few lines from the tutorial:
setContentView(R.layout.main);
When I ran the app, it launched my emulator but all I saw was a vertical screen on the left that said "ANDROID" and phone buttons on the right. I did not see the "Hello, Android" text from the tutorial.

I chat a lot on AIM and Yahoo messenger, so naturally I'd like an IM app for my phone. I use Pidgin on my home PC, but I don't think it's available for Android yet, so I installed Nimbuzz.
Nimbuzz works great, except that whenever the screen goes dark on idle, it disconnects. This is obviously unacceptable, because the screen often goes dark before the reply to my last IM arrives, making the other party think I've "hung up" on them. I decided to try Trillian instead, but it does the same exact thing.
Is there an IM app out there that actually stays connected? It doesn't seem like this should be such a complicated thing!

I'm looking into some mileage tracking apps so I can track my mileage at work. There are several on the market that work via gps. Basically you press a button when you start your trip and another button when you end it. My question is about how these apps actually track you. Do they track your location as the crow flies (i.e. they look at your start and end and calculate the distance straight between) or do they calculate based on the actual roads you have to take to get from A to B? I'm wondering if I'd be better off with just an app where I record my miles directly and don't mess with GPS. Can anyone recommend some good mileage tracking apps?

I've got a droid with three work emails showing on it. They are all set up on the same server and all have the same settings. However, two of the emails can be seen fully and one will not load at all. Cannot see emails in the account or send/receive anything. This is fairly frustrating. I've uninstalled/installed the email account a number of times and done a reset.

I'm seeking for an android based phone. I want the best phone currently available (or coming out in the following month) that can work on GSM. I want an advanced and powerful phone. I saw the EVO which looks amazing (except for the screen). The Desire which is my leading choice right now. And the samsung I9000 which is also great. Do you have a favorable one? Are there other choices?

Looks like the new Skype app won't work over 3G in the US, probably because the carriers would whine about it. I have put together a modified version of the skype apk from the market that works over 3G anywhere. Be sure to uninstall the Market app first!

The screen turns off before the timer finishes, how can I make the screen stay visible?
mWakeLock is a field previously declared like so: private PowerManager.WakeLock mWakeLock;
My device uses Android 1.6. I would really appreciate any help to resolve this.

I always noticed that "Market" app downloads sat for a long time in the "Downloads" queue, hung at "Starting download...", but the download would eventually start. Now that I changed countries and removed the SIM card, downloads don't work at all. They always hang at "Starting download". It isn't a networking problem, as search works and a different set of apps is visible (probably related to the country switch).

I'm attempting to remove certain files from the SD image mounted on the emulator.
NDUNN-PC ~
$ adb devices
List of devices attached
emulator-5554 device
NDUNN-PC ~
$ adb shell rm -f /sdcard/maps/*
rm failed for -f, Read-only file system
NDUNN-PC ~
$ adb remount
remount succeeded
NDUNN-PC ~
$ adb shell rm -f /sdcard/maps/*
rm failed for -f, Read-only file system
From all the docs I've read, remount is supposed to toggle between read-write/read-only permissions. But that doesn't seem to work in this case. Any idea what's wrong? Using Windows XP, emulator is running Android SDK 1.6 (with Google Maps APIs).

I am one of the many that feel the F.B app for Android needs some work. We won't get into discussion about what it needs and what works fine, we have a dozen threads about that already. Basically what I created this thread was to inform you all that " I think we all need to email the developers and let them know we feel it could use some work and we would appreciate it. We don't need to blast them and insult them about it, but I feel we should let our voices be heard. Go to market place and press your menu button and press downloads. Scroll to Facebook for android and click on it. scroll down till you see " Send email to developer". Now you click on that and send your email away.
