Android :: App Source From Git Not Compatible With Current SDK?

Feb 7, 2009

I loaded up the Alarm Clock app from the current git (http:// android.git.kernel.org/?p=platform/packages/apps/ AlarmClock.git;a=snapshot;h=c8208f9f6ff76479da3b1eb0cedbd5500b8be1f4;sf=tgz) into eclipse, and there are a lot of errors, unfound imports and things like that. Are the 'cupcake' versions of the /apps/ incompatible with the current SDK? Should I bother trying to fix them?

Android :: ChoiceMode Compatible With ExpandableListView?

May 12, 2010

Is it possible to make a multiple choice list with android:choiceMode="multipleChoice" or setChoiceMode(ListView.CHOICE_MODE_MULTIPLE) on an ExpandableListView? I am able to do this with CheckBoxes on a plain ListView, but it doesn't seem to be working with ExpandableListView. In the latter, clicking the list item (either parent or child) does not affect the checkbox as it does in the former.

I have noticed that it is possible to click exactly on the checkbox to make it toggle, but this is a very small target.

Android :: Compatible Screen Sizes On Droid G1

Mar 28, 2010

I have read the documentation on "supporting multiple screens" but can't seem to figure it out. I mean, i understand that resolution effects it but it just doesn't make sense to me that the droid and the T-Mobile G1 both use the regular "layout" directory. I developed the app on a droid and got everything to work but there is one view that i need to use hard-coded pixels.....which im using dpi. Now when installing the app on the G1 things on that view are getting cut off because the G1 has a much smaller screen. If I redo it to work on the G1 then everything is all squished together on the droid and even tho everything is visible this way, it looks silly.

I tried using the different attributes in my manifest but that didn't help but since i'm using minSDK as 4, the support different screen size attributes are true by default anyway.

Am i missing something very simple and obvious or is it just the way it is?? Isn't the physical screen size of the G1 like an 1" smaller?? I'm still kinda new to Android development so forgive me if i am missing something simple.

Android :: How To OS Upgrades Work - Apps Compatible?

Dec 17, 2009

1. How do OS upgrades work. Can any android device easily upgrade from 1.5 to 1.6 or even 2.1? or are these issued by the manufacturer, thus we have to wait until they're ready?

2. Are android apps compatible with all android devices? I've heard that Archos 5 doesn't support all android apps and the Camangi device has its own app market (Camangi Market - Apps). Would apps from the official android market work on any android device? What's the point of Camangi having it's own app market?

Android :: How To Select Font Size And Still Being Future Compatible

Aug 10, 2010

I create a game board with squares. The size of each square (both height and width) is phone_pixel_width/number_of_squares to maximize the size of each square on the game screen depending on resolution (oh and I do not support mdpi devices, thus it does not get to small). Now my problem is that I also write text in these squares. If I use the same font size for HVGA screens and for WVGA (hdpi-normal) screens the font gets to big on the HVGA (mdpi-normal) screen. I was thinking about being able to select font size depending on its width and could thus adapt the font size perfectly to the calculated square width. Is there any easy way of doing this (note: I am using TextPaint and not TextView) or do I have to calculate this myself, on the fly so to speak by creating some kind of table at start-up.

Android :: Gallery Not Backward Compatible With Cupcake Version

Apr 26, 2010

I don't know why, but in Eclair, the default (non-fancy) gallery app changed its behavior from the Cupcake version, and it broke one of my commercial applications Firstly, when long-pressing a gallery and choosing "Diashow", it does not publish an Intent to be picked up by any application that implements the Intent filter anymore. Instead, it will directly call "com.android.gallery/com.android.camera.ViewImage" with extras. Question: is it still possible to intercept this intent and allow the user to choose my application to do the Diashow? Secondly, the intent extras for the VIEW intent are messed up (in my build of 2.1 anyway): Instead of providing the BucketId of the picture in the Intent's query parameter. But in 2.1, the BucketId is moved to the Intent's extras. Except; it is not passing the BUCKET_ID, but the unlocalized BUCKET_DISPLAY_NAME instead Question: how can I still get the unique BUCKET_ID from the intent, so that I do not have to work with a potentially non-unique BUCKET_DISPLAY_NAME.

Android :: Create Separate Applications - Backwards Compatible?

Is Android backwards compatible, in other words can an application developed in Android 1.6 run in Android 2.0? I just published a 2.0 application and discovered that I can't find it in the market using my G1 (Android 1.6) phone. But apparently others are downloading it. Should I downgrade the application to 1.6 or do I need to create separate applications for each Android version?

Media :: Manually Manage Music - Compatible Android Players?

Aug 20, 2010

I've been using doubleTwist to sync & manage my music on my HTC EVO 4G (and Palm Pre) and I've had just about enough of its slow iTunes syncing, slow device syncing and overall clunkiness (yes, I'm a previous user of the iPod/iTunes and Zune/Zune Software systems). Though I love the doubleTwist player for Android I'm done with doubleTwist. And no I'm not interested in Salling Media Sync (especially since its not free).

If I manage things myself by manually syncing/copying music to my Android (i.e., artist/album/ folder structure under /sdcard/music/):
[1] Where do I place the playlists (in .m3u format)?: /sdcard/music/playlists OR /sdcard/music/playlist1.m3u, playlist2.m3u, etc.
[2] what Android players are compatible with this format/structure (i.e., that'll pick up the playlists just fine)?

Android :: Application Compatible With System Assigned Permissions Automatically

Apr 7, 2010

I've noticed a troubling issue with app permissions. It seems that after installing, some apps that didn't ask for these two permissions:
Storage: modify/delete SD card contents
Phone calls: read phone state and identity
will magically acquire them after install! These apps do not ask for these permissions during install, nor do their Market pages disclose that they need them. After looking through many logcat messages during an install, I found this:
04-07 03:23:08.973,I,PackageParser,1016,com.some.app.nam e.here: compat added android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE android.permission.READ_PHONE_STATE

Digging around, I found this online:
Android permissions: Phone Calls: read phone state and identity - Stack Overflow. It seems that an app that is compatible with systems earlier than 1.6 will automatically be assigned those two permissions. If a developer is willing to make their app compatible only with 1.6+ systems, they can change their app's manifest:
<uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="4" android:targetSdkVersion="4" />
and when users on 1.6+ devices install the app, those two extra permissions won't show up.

I bet a lot of app developers don't know this, and therefore their apps will seems to acquire those two permissions magically. Users will install those apps, see the two extra permissions when they inspect the app security setting and be very puzzled. They'll probably think the app is malware and uninstall it. I've contacted some app developer about this issue, so that they can (hopefully) fix their app so it doesn't look like malware. Unfortunately, until all legit apps are fixed, it'll be hard to distinguish amongst apps that have those permissions, which app actually needs those permissions, which apps need fixing, and which apps are malware.

Android :: Stay Backwards And Forwards Compatible - TargetSDKVersion Hdpi MinSDKVersion?

Apr 16, 2010

Here's my situation: I have an app that's been compiled using 1.5 SDK and minSdkVersion=3. Now I want to add 2 icons: one for high density screens like Droid and another one for low density screens like G1.

For this, I added the high density icon to new directory drawable-hdpi- v4/. I then compiled using 1.6 sdk and added targetSdkVersion="4" to the manifest. minSdkVersion is still 3.

This is working in limited testing, but I'm not sure if I have done everything correctly.

I have many questions:
1. By specifying v4 in drawable-hdpi-v4, the icon will not be displayed to 1.5 or below OS's. But what about users with 2.0 or higher SDK's? Will they get the non-hdpi icon, since they will have v6 or v7 ?

2. The documentation for targetSdkVersion states, "Specifying this target version allows the platform to disable compatibility settings that are not required for the target version (which may otherwise be turned on in order to maintain forward-compatibility)". Does this mean that my app will not be forward compatible as soon as I specify a targetSdkVersion? What exactly is being turned off?

3. Even if I leave out the targetSdkVersion="4", the app runs ok. So do I really need it?

4. Should I be using the latest SDK (2.1) and setting that as the targetsdkversion and compiling against that? Or some other combination of targetsdkversion and compiling sdk? I'm not using any API's that are not in 1.5..

5. Is any of this related to why some of my HTC Eris users have complained that they can no longer find my app in Market after upgrading to 2.1?
