Android :: Gallery Not Backward Compatible With Cupcake Version

Apr 26, 2010

I don't know why, but in Eclair, the default (non-fancy) gallery app changed its behavior from the Cupcake version, and it broke one of my commercial applications Firstly, when long-pressing a gallery and choosing "Diashow", it does not publish an Intent to be picked up by any application that implements the Intent filter anymore. Instead, it will directly call "com.android.gallery/com.android.camera.ViewImage" with extras. Question: is it still possible to intercept this intent and allow the user to choose my application to do the Diashow? Secondly, the intent extras for the VIEW intent are messed up (in my build of 2.1 anyway): Instead of providing the BucketId of the picture in the Intent's query parameter. But in 2.1, the BucketId is moved to the Intent's extras. Except; it is not passing the BUCKET_ID, but the unlocalized BUCKET_DISPLAY_NAME instead Question: how can I still get the unique BUCKET_ID from the intent, so that I do not have to work with a potentially non-unique BUCKET_DISPLAY_NAME.

Here's my story.
I downloaded the NotePad tutorial project exercise files.
I created an Android project based on the tutorial files for the completed exercise (located in the Notepadv3Solution folder)
I run the project and bellow is a screenshot of what appears:
It doesn't seem to be working properly.

Could it be because I'm on version 2.2?

Android : Need Eclipse Plugging Compatible With Version Of "custom" Sdk

Jan 19, 2009

I downloaded the android source code and this already has Cupcake branch merged into main. I compile and made the sdk ("make sdk") with success. But now i need the eclipse plugin compatible with this version of this "custom" sdk. Note that i just downloaded and compile. I need to work with audio streaming, and in our prototype we walked around, but now, we really need this feature. So i'm trying to use it. I looked the source, and, apparently, Cupcake solves our needs. I try this link, http://review.source.android.com/5290/diff/201/z474cb3132ea0f2114f9e5..., but when i import the projects into my workspace, many compile errors appear. I think that there is a lot of new functions and classes, that eclipse plugin doesn't detect...So, how can i build successfully the eclipse plugin?

Android :: Code Depending On Version Of API?

Nov 24, 2010

In Android I get the version of the SDK easily (Build.VERSION.SDK) but I need to use LabeledIntent only if the platform is newer than 1.6 (>Build.VERSION_CODES.DONUT) I suppose that Reflection is necessary (I have read this link but it is not clear for a class or to me). This is the code but it gives me an exception because in my Android 1.6, the compiler verifies if the package exists even if the condition is not applied:

Intent theIntent=....;
if(Integer.parseInt(Build.VERSION.SDK) > Build.VERSION_CODES.DONUT)
{
try{
Intent intentChooser = Intent.createChooser(intent,"Choose between these programs");
Parcelable[] parcelable = new Parcelable[1];
parcelable[0] = new android.content.pm.LabeledIntent(theIntent, "", "Texto plano", 0);
intentChooser.putExtra(Intent.EXTRA_INITIAL_INTENTS, parcelable);
activity.startActivity(intentChooser);
}
catch(Exception e)
{
activity.startActivity(theIntent);
}
} else
{
activity.startActivity(intentMedicamento);
}

Android :: Multiple Concurrent Versions Of Same App / Filtered By Sdk Version?

Jul 30, 2010

I have an app on Android Market right now with a minSdkVersion corresponding to Android 1.6. I'd like to make an update that is only visible to users of Android 2.2 and higher (there is a good reason for this, which I will explain below). So I have two questions:
- First, if I publish an update with a higher minSdkVersion than the one it replaces, will existing users still be able to see and download the old version if their device is not >= that minSdkVersion? - Secondly, if so, would it be possible to publish updates to that older version branch? Or would it become a fossil relic, but at least always there for downlevel users? Now for the background. My apps use a large amount of resource files-- about 15MB for the Lite version, and about 55 for the Full version. Prior to Android 2.2, it was not possible to install an app on the SD card, so my solution to this was to have the app contain the bare essentials, and simply download the other resources from my web servers at first-run. However, this means that I must maintain external infrastructure, and it's also a bad experience for users who must download the app, then start another download sequence (I already have had several complaints about this in my user comments). What I would like to do is to keep the app as it is for users with Android OS < 2.2. I'd like to publish an update that is only visible to users with Android OS >= 2.2 which packages everything into the app and allows it to be stored on the SD card. And I'd like to be able to perform maintenance on both versions as needed. Why can't I just do the update as described above to a single branch of the app? Because it would mean that users with Android OS < 2.2 would have to download a massive application to their internal memory, which could be a deal-breaker for devices with only 128MB or 256MB, which is shared with the OS. Since I already have paying customers, I don't think I can ethically create an update that would potentially consume most of a user's internal memory, when the version they purchased was only a couple MB.

Android :: Matching SDK Version To Code - NPE Bug In WebView?

Mar 15, 2009

I wrote an app that, among other things, renders feed articles using WebView. Now I get error reports that seem to originate in WebView:

-- NewsRob Version: 1.7.0/170 -- Android Version: sdk=2, release=1.1, inc=128600 -- Thread State: RUNNABLE -- Stacktrace: java.lang.NullPointerException at android.webkit.CacheManager$1.run(CacheManager.java:391) at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:935)

I've got another report with the same content, but a different incremental version of the sdk (126986). Probably one from the US and one from the UK. So now I would love to know why the code blows up and if there is anything I can do about it. And with the source files and line numbers I felt in good shape to so. If only I could match them to the public code repositories ;-(............................
