View 2 RepliesSo I'm a little confused about Skype on Android. As I understand it, it's not really running Skype at all, it's just a fancy way to call their local Skype number, which you can actually do on any cell phone, right? So you still use minutes. If you make long-distance calls, you'll also use credits. If you make local-calls, I assume you don't? And do you use credit if you make Skype-to-Skype calls? What if someone Skypes you -- do you still use credit? Second, can Fring really do real voip Skype calls? Just using my wifi and no minutes? Can I see all my Skype contacts? Can they see me?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am getting a Galaxy S end of this week or early next week. Wondering how good it will be for VOIP. I am thinking of using either Skype, Fring or Nimbuzz in the background 24x7, connected mostly over 3G but sometimes (at home and at work) over Wi-Fi. If Wi-Fi is going to drain the battery faster, then I can have it on 3G all the time. I'm more than happy if I can get one day out of it. What do you guys think? Has anyone tried it?

I downloaded the NotePad tutorial project exercise files.
I created an Android project based on the tutorial files for the completed exercise (located in the Notepadv3Solution folder)
I run the project and bellow is a screenshot of what appears:
It doesn't seem to be working properly.
Could it be because I'm on version 2.2?

I am going to Iraq in less than 3 weeks and want to be able to VOIP using my phone so I'm not connected to my computer. Is there an app that allows this for free or as close as to free as I can get. I have a Rooted Moto Droid.
Bottom line for a worry free, good quality VOIP service, what should I use?
Is there a way to build a VPN 'provider' for Android? A way to add new VPN types to the existing VPN infrastructure? OpenVPN, for instance, though also things like pppoe might fit in this category.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm developing an android application that involves the detection of the users' location. What I would like to know is, how does this -> LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER work?Does it uses the GPS system in the phone or does it uses the mobile company's area network location?Whenever I turn on the GPS system in my phone, the map would not load. It will only be able to detect & pinpoint the location when I deactivate it. I think the application is tapping into the GPRS or something.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am having a hard time understanding content providers. In the notepad example and others, the content provider never even declares its CONTENT_URI anywhere inside itself, yet the docs say to publicly declare this. It's declared in a different class. So when an activity queries a content provider with a CONTENT_URI, how does Android know which one I want. I see no link between a content provider and its CONTENT_URI declared in another class.
I also don't how to think about intents and content providers. I know that you don't call an intent on a content provider. But an activity queries a content provider without an intent, and an activity has a mimetype attribute in the manifest that would seem to tie it to a content provider.
I'm wondering what reasons there could be for an app to not be compatible with a certain device. An app is incompatible with my phone, but I meet the minimum OS requirement.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSo I flashed CM6 that was ported for the Eris and I looked in the ROM manager application and noticed that there are updates you can check for. If theres an update will it be compatible with me phone? Because it was ported for the eris. So does that cause any issues?

I bought a Htc Desire which is a Telus phone it is supposed to be unlocked and runs on Hspa 1900mhz and 850 mhz, but Sasktel's website says that it doesn't seem to be compatible. So the question is why? It appears this device is not compatible with the SaskTel 3G+ network. If you believe your device should be compatible and the tool does not recognize it, please bring it to a SaskTel store or authorized dealer for more information.

My Verizon signal totally sux at home, and VZ does not seem to show any interest in fixing the matter. I have a high speed connection at home, so utilizing VOIP shouldn't be a problem - if I can find out how.
Has anyone got any experience with external keyboards for the Desire?
Are they compatible? Are they any good?
I have read the documentation on "supporting multiple screens" but can't seem to figure it out. I mean, i understand that resolution effects it but it just doesn't make sense to me that the droid and the T-Mobile G1 both use the regular "layout" directory. I developed the app on a droid and got everything to work but there is one view that i need to use hard-coded pixels.....which im using dpi. Now when installing the app on the G1 things on that view are getting cut off because the G1 has a much smaller screen. If I redo it to work on the G1 then everything is all squished together on the droid and even tho everything is visible this way, it looks silly.
I tried using the different attributes in my manifest but that didn't help but since i'm using minSDK as 4, the support different screen size attributes are true by default anyway.
Am i missing something very simple and obvious or is it just the way it is?? Isn't the physical screen size of the G1 like an 1" smaller?? I'm still kinda new to Android development so forgive me if i am missing something simple.
Well I've been playing with my droid and I have installed and uninstalled a few apps
