HTC Droid Eris :: Upgrading To 2.1 Tutorial
Mar 7, 2010
UPDATE: 06/14/10
I'm back on the forums, FINALLY! I finally got fed-up with dealing with Verizon and their rediculas prices. I had 2 phones on my 700 Family Share plan and it was nearly $160 with NO extra features. Just phone. Not internet, no texts, basic NON3G phone.. Looked into other carrirers and found Sprint... What is that? It's HUGE!... It's the EVO 4G. I'M THERE! I am spending the same each month as I was with verizon, with a Smartphone plan. I love it!
Fallow me on the HTC EVO 4G section! http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-4g/
IMPORTANT UPDATE: 04/03/10
I had to make a choice between my Droid Eris and purchasing a vehicle for the future. Of course, the vehicle won; so I no longer have the Eris *pout*. I hope everyone has fun with the future updates and conversations regarding the Eris and 2.x updates. I thank everyone that has helped me out and the 50+ who thanked for this Thread.

I just received my phone today. Wifi doesn't work - it just says "remembered" but disconnected. I've read a lot of threads with how to upgrade the firmware, but they have a lot of terminology I don't know at all. Is there a guide or tutorial for upgrading the firmware?
1.) Model Number ? Galaxy
2.) Firmware Version ? 1.5
3.) Baseband Version ? I7500JVG4
4.) Kernel Version ? 2.6.27 wootae77@SE-S409 #1
5.) Build Number ? 76XXCSDCBALUM6375
I bought the phone on Expansys, and they shipped it from the US to Canada (where I live). I'm using Fido as the carrier. There was no software (e.g. CD) that came with the delivery. So what are the steps in upgrading to the latest firmware?

I got fed up with my music player constantly skipping/phone lag on my Eris and got a VZW manager to approve a early upgrade for me. I was thinking should I go with the Droid X? I wanted some current owner's opinions before I drop $200 on it.Currently I mainly use my phone for:
1. Texting- I send hundreds of texts a day.
2. Web Surfing- I spend a lot of time on-line google, news..etc
3. Picture taking- I love to snap photos of friends and travels.
4. Talking- I maybe use 500 min a month if that. I text a lot due to working in a call center.
5. Mp3 player- i use my phone in the car and at work so i can have good music rather than the crap work plays on the speakers to listen to.
Considering these points do you think it would be wise to choose the X?All input is welcome and appreciated.

My phone just doesn't want to consistently make calls (audio problem - either i can't hear the other party or they can't hear me) and I am pretty sure it's my phone as I don't hear about that happening much here. It's gotten twice as bad since upgrading to 2.1. I hate the idea of a refurb but I might have no choice. Just wondering if I might still have a chance of getting a new handset. For those who have definitely gotten like-new handsets, what condition was it in?

MAC/LINUX ROOT TUTORIAL
Many people have said that they are having difficulties understanding the root process, so I typed up a complete tutorial exactly the way I rooted my phone. All credit goes to wag3slav3 over at XDA, Root for ERIS LEAKERS! - xda-developers, I just expanded on the instructions
1.Download the Android SDK from here: Android SDK | Android Developers
2.Download hack-v4.zip from here: Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!
3.When the hack-v4.zip is done downloading put the files of the folder into the tools folder of the already extracted android sdk. The tools folder can be found at /where ever you put the sdk/android-sdk-86_mac/tools.
4.Download a custom ROM, I recommend KaosFroyo, but you can choose whatever one you want. Place the .zip file on the root of the SD Card (ie. Not in a folder). PS. If your mac automatically decompresses the .zip, you can find the original .zip file in the trash. For this plug your phone into the computer, pull down the notification bar at the top of the screen on your phone and tap the USB connection notification, then tap Mount as Disk Drive. Copy the .zip onto the phone.
LIST OF ROMS: Known Droid Eris Roms, Patches and Hacks - UPDATED 05-11-2010 - xda-developers
5.To change directories to sdk/tools folder:
1.Open a new terminal window and type cd [space]
2.Find the android sdk in a finder window
3.Drag the folder that says tools to the terminal window and press [ENTER]
4.There now should be the word "tools" in front of the computer name/your name in terminal.
6. On your phone go in to Applications->Development->USB Debugging and make sure it is checked. Plug your phone into your computer, select "charge only" not Disk Drive mode
7. To test if your ADB is working run " ./adb devices " . If you get an alphanumeric code that starts with HTXXXXXXXXXX and says device then you are all set.
8. Once your phone is plugged in run " sh runinlinuxfromtools.sh "
It takes a while to load, but you should be in Amon's recovery after its done. If you don't see Amon's recovery than try step 9.
9. If you get "adb: command not found, try " sh runinlinuxadb.sh "
10. Your phone will now boot into recovery. From there select "Backup/Restore" > and NAND Backup. Let it load, it takes a minute or two, then return back to main menu. Then select "Wipe" > choose Wide data/factory reset. Return to menu and select "Flash zip from sdcard" > find your .zip file that you downloaded (the ROM). It should have the name of the ROM somewhere in the zip name. Let it do its thing, then select reboot option.
11. Congrats, you have successfully rooted your phone! If your ROM does not already include "SuperUser.apk", download and install the app as soon as possible.
12. [OPTIONAL] If you want to change the boot loader to the engineering bootloader (ie. S-OFF) then follow these instructions How To Install Engineering bootloader FOR LEAK ROOTERS - xda-developers
But I have found a change that will make this much more hassle-free. On the last step when you see you have successfully changed the HBOOT, do a battery pull, and start the phone back up again. You do not have to do those commands for the final step. Then complete the root instructions above and you will have a changed boot-loader and root.

ANY AND ALL QUESTIONS WILL BE ANSWERED!
Windows ROOT TUTORIAL --
1. Download Android SDK from here:Android SDK | Android Developers Follow the instructions (1-11) that were written by GrdLock in order to properly install the SDK package in Windows. Click the link and scroll down to A. Pre-requisite: Android SDK: http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/53963-guide-stock-1-5-latest-root-2-1-a.html
2. Download and Install HTC Sync from here: [url]
3. Download hack-v4.zip from here: Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!
4. Unzip the hack-v4.zip is into the tools folder of the already installed android sdk folder. The tools folder can be found at /where ever you put the sdk folder/android-sdk-windows/tools.
5. Download a custom ROM from this forum or one of the other popular Android forums (see the link below). Do not upzip the ROM file. Instead, place the .zip file on the root of the SD Card (ie. Not in a folder). To do this, plug your phone into the computer, pull down the notification bar at the top of the screen on your phone, and tap the USB connection notification, then tap Mount as Disk Drive. Copy the .zip onto the phone.
LIST OF ROMS: Known Droid Eris Roms, Patches and Hacks - UPDATED 05-11-2010 - xda-developers (I hope to be able to update this soon).
6. To open a command window in the tools directory:
[VISTA and WIN7] Navigate to your Android-sdk-Windows folder and open the Tools folder. Find a blank spot in the window and hold down the shift key + right mouse click. Choose the option, "Open Command Window Here."
[XP] Click Start>Run and type "cmd". This will bring up a command window and from there type " cd C:android-sdk-windows ools "
7. On your phone go in to Applications->Development->USB Debugging and make sure it is checked. Plug your phone into your computer and select "Charge Only" (not Disk Drive mode).
8. To test if your ADB is working type "adb devices " and hit enter . If you get an alphanumeric code that starts with HTXXXXXXXXXX and says device then you are all set.
9. With your phone still plugged in type "runindos.bat" (at the end of the string in the command window on your PC) and hit Enter
Your phone will reboot, sit a while, and then reboot again into Amon's recovery.
10. In Recovery, select "Backup/Restore" > and NAND Backup. Let it load, it takes a minute or two, then return back to main menu.
11. Select "Wipe" > choose Wipe data/factory reset. Return to menu and select "Flash zip from sdcard" > find your .zip file that you downloaded (the ROM). It should have the name of the ROM somewhere in the zip name. Let it do its thing, then select reboot option.
12. Congrats, you have successfully rooted your phone!

FLASHING CUSTOM ROM's (Once Root is gained)
In order to flash a new ROM after obtaining root you simply:
1. Find and download the ROM that you want to use.
2. Mount your PC and copy the .zip file over to your SD card like you did for root.
3. Turn off your phone and power it back up while holding down the up volume key.
4. After booting into Recovery, go to Wipe and wipe factory data along with Dalvik Cache.
5. Back out of the Wipe menu and go to Install from SD. Your ROM will be there. Hit install and it will put the new ROM that you want, on your phone.
6. Reboot and you will see a boot animation screen for several minutes before it loads your new ROM.
7. Repeat this procedure with a Nand Backup each time you get a new ROM set up.

I have xtrROM 4.0.4 installed and its working great. I do have an issue with my Gmail coming in late though. I had a reminder from my Google calendar yesterday at 1pm, and I got the email for it today @ 4:30pm. I saw when 4.0.6.1 came out it said on a post here "fixes the Gmail Sync issue". Is this the issue I'm seeing? Since I have everything running how I want, is it worth upgrading to 4.0.6.1? Do I have to do a full wipe and reinstall everything? Or can I flash right on top (after a NAND backup of course)?

I recently got rid of my iPhone (couldn't stand Job's arrogance anymore) and decided to go with the cost effective route of MetroPCS. When I found Android phones could be flashed to work with it, I was quite excited. I found a phone and someone to do the flashing on Craigslist (actually a local phone shop that does it).
He flashed my phone and loaded Evil Eris onto it. I wasn't under the impression that if he put this rom on, I was going to have issues, like no voicemail notification or softkey leds. Going into this, I was pretty unaware of all the different rom choices, and the effects they have on the phone, and I still kind of am. So I have a few questions, because I've been reading about Ivans and kind of want to try it out, but want to make sure I've covered all my bases.
1. I am still unaware of the exclusivity or co-dependence that "flashing" a phone and changing a rom have with one another. He flashed my phone to work with Metro, and upload the Evil Eris rom. Main question is - if I wipe and load Ivans, do I lose the ability to use Metro? Or is it simply an issue of loading up my Metro APN (i think thats right) settings once I've loaded the new rom?
2. Nandroid backup - I made one the other day. If I go in, try another rom, and screw something up, I am under the impression that I could restore that backup and my phone be working like I never left it, including MetroPCS settings, correct?
3. Can anyone suggest a good program to backup and restore carrier specific settings, so that if I load a new rom I can quickly port settings over? Does something like this exist?
4. Finally, if all of this has been answered somewhere where I didn't find, feel free to send me to those links!

So I've searched high and low and can't figure out a good (idiot proof) tutorial for setting up adb? Can someone put one together (for windows) or point me in the right direction? I currently use terminal for almost everything, but most people write their tuts for adb. If you write one, please start simple and at the bottom and work your way up.

I'm trying to run the Android Notepadv3 app on the Motorola Droid. When I am creating a new note, if I rotate my phone so that the view should switch to horizontal, or if I open it up so the keyboard is exposed, the app freezes and crashes.
I haven't modified the program in anyway from Exercise 3 solution (http://developer.android.com/resources/tutorials/notepad/index.html). Any ideas why this is happening?

Here's my story.
I downloaded the NotePad tutorial project exercise files.
I created an Android project based on the tutorial files for the completed exercise (located in the Notepadv3Solution folder)
I run the project and bellow is a screenshot of what appears:
It doesn't seem to be working properly.
Could it be because I'm on version 2.2?

I've been thinking about upgrading to the X seeing as I epic failed finding the Missing phone in Boston after sitting right next to the guy who was giving it away before they gave out the final clue .
My upgrade date isn't until next year, if i call CS is there anychance they will allow me to upgrade at the $199 price or am I SOL? and if they do and i order it over the phone can I have them just add the cost to my next bill or will i have to pay over the phone? I've actually never upgraded my phone before, the first real cellphone i bought on my own was the iPhone 3G and didn't upgrade to the 3GS because it was crap and ended up switching to Verizon and the Droid when it was released...

I know about camel case rules, but I'm confused with this m rule. What does it stand for? I'm a php developer, "we" use first letters of variables as indication of type, like 'b' for boolean, 'i' for integer and so on.
Is 'm' a java thing? Does it stand for mobile? mixed?

I don't think this has been asked before in this forum, but if it has, I apologize for repeating... Just like many of you probably are, I am in need of more storage. 14 GB is evaporating fast, and I'm not sure the SD card is upgradable yet. I don't fully understand exactly what an SD card does besides provide storage (ie: does it function as a hard drive, etc). Basically, how are those who are upgrading their SD cards doing so without having to reload all your apps, re-buying apps you paid for, and having to otherwise completely set up your Droid all over again from scratch?
