HTC Eris :: Detailed Leak Root Tutorial

MAC/LINUX ROOT TUTORIAL
Many people have said that they are having difficulties understanding the root process, so I typed up a complete tutorial exactly the way I rooted my phone. All credit goes to wag3slav3 over at XDA, Root for ERIS LEAKERS! - xda-developers, I just expanded on the instructions
1.Download the Android SDK from here: Android SDK | Android Developers
2.Download hack-v4.zip from here: Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!
3.When the hack-v4.zip is done downloading put the files of the folder into the tools folder of the already extracted android sdk. The tools folder can be found at /where ever you put the sdk/android-sdk-86_mac/tools.
4.Download a custom ROM, I recommend KaosFroyo, but you can choose whatever one you want. Place the .zip file on the root of the SD Card (ie. Not in a folder). PS. If your mac automatically decompresses the .zip, you can find the original .zip file in the trash. For this plug your phone into the computer, pull down the notification bar at the top of the screen on your phone and tap the USB connection notification, then tap Mount as Disk Drive. Copy the .zip onto the phone.
LIST OF ROMS: Known Droid Eris Roms, Patches and Hacks - UPDATED 05-11-2010 - xda-developers
5.To change directories to sdk/tools folder:
1.Open a new terminal window and type cd [space]
2.Find the android sdk in a finder window
3.Drag the folder that says tools to the terminal window and press [ENTER]
4.There now should be the word "tools" in front of the computer name/your name in terminal.
6. On your phone go in to Applications->Development->USB Debugging and make sure it is checked. Plug your phone into your computer, select "charge only" not Disk Drive mode
7. To test if your ADB is working run " ./adb devices " . If you get an alphanumeric code that starts with HTXXXXXXXXXX and says device then you are all set.
8. Once your phone is plugged in run " sh runinlinuxfromtools.sh "
It takes a while to load, but you should be in Amon's recovery after its done. If you don't see Amon's recovery than try step 9.
9. If you get "adb: command not found, try " sh runinlinuxadb.sh "
10. Your phone will now boot into recovery. From there select "Backup/Restore" > and NAND Backup. Let it load, it takes a minute or two, then return back to main menu. Then select "Wipe" > choose Wide data/factory reset. Return to menu and select "Flash zip from sdcard" > find your .zip file that you downloaded (the ROM). It should have the name of the ROM somewhere in the zip name. Let it do its thing, then select reboot option.
11. Congrats, you have successfully rooted your phone! If your ROM does not already include "SuperUser.apk", download and install the app as soon as possible.
12. [OPTIONAL] If you want to change the boot loader to the engineering bootloader (ie. S-OFF) then follow these instructions How To Install Engineering bootloader FOR LEAK ROOTERS - xda-developers
But I have found a change that will make this much more hassle-free. On the last step when you see you have successfully changed the HBOOT, do a battery pull, and start the phone back up again. You do not have to do those commands for the final step. Then complete the root instructions above and you will have a changed boot-loader and root.

2. Download and Install HTC Sync from here: [url]
3. Download hack-v4.zip from here: Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!
4. Unzip the hack-v4.zip is into the tools folder of the already installed android sdk folder. The tools folder can be found at /where ever you put the sdk folder/android-sdk-windows/tools.
5. Download a custom ROM from this forum or one of the other popular Android forums (see the link below). Do not upzip the ROM file. Instead, place the .zip file on the root of the SD Card (ie. Not in a folder). 6. To open a command window in the tools directory:
[VISTA and WIN7] Navigate to your Android-sdk-Windows folder and open the Tools folder. Find a blank spot in the window and hold down the shift key + right mouse click. Choose the option, "Open Command Window Here."
[XP] Click Start>Run and type "cmd". This will bring up a command window and from there type " cd C:android-sdk-windows ools "
7. On your phone go in to Applications->Development->USB Debugging and make sure it is checked. Plug your phone into your computer and select "Charge Only" (not Disk Drive mode).
8. To test if your ADB is working type "adb devices " and hit enter . If you get an alphanumeric code that starts with HTXXXXXXXXXX and says device then you are all set.
9. With your phone still plugged in type "runindos.bat" (at the end of the string in the command window on your PC) and hit Enter
Your phone will reboot, sit a while, and then reboot again into Amon's recovery.
10. In Recovery, select "Backup/Restore" > and NAND Backup. Let it load, it takes a minute or two, then return back to main menu.
11. Select "Wipe" > choose Wipe data/factory reset. Return to menu and select "Flash zip from sdcard" > find your .zip file that you downloaded (the ROM). It should have the name of the ROM somewhere in the zip name. Let it do its thing, then select reboot option.
12. Congrats, you have successfully rooted your phone!

FLASHING CUSTOM ROM's (Once Root is gained)
In order to flash a new ROM after obtaining root you simply:
1. Find and download the ROM that you want to use.
2. Mount your PC and copy the .zip file over to your SD card like you did for root.
3. Turn off your phone and power it back up while holding down the up volume key.
4. After booting into Recovery, go to Wipe and wipe factory data along with Dalvik Cache.
5. Back out of the Wipe menu and go to Install from SD. Your ROM will be there. Hit install and it will put the new ROM that you want, on your phone.
6. Reboot and you will see a boot animation screen for several minutes before it loads your new ROM.
7. Repeat this procedure with a Nand Backup each time you get a new ROM set up.

Totally confused about if I can Root or Not, If it will cure my problems (unresponsiveness, Freeze up's and the annoying self starting useless apps - Amazon MP3, my uploads, Footprints etc.).And of course, How to do it?I Progressed through all 3 leaks on My ERIS and now (just last week) have the OTA update as well.I know this has been talked about B4 but I can't seem to find the correct thread. Also, I can't get a simple definitive answer, that doesn't preface something Like, Here's a Link go read this and the 20 other links it references as well. Not that I have a problem reading all the info, it's just that everyday the answers change or someone offers a "better mousetrap" or just confuses the issue with opinions instead of facts. If there is anybody who can simply tell me if on leak 3 and the recent update, I can Root, How to "simply" do it. That one click root thread seems simple enough! And can give me the name and link of a ROM that will get rid of the Crap that runs in the background but wont cripple or disable the phones main functions such as Phone, GPS Email and the modified FLASH we have had since day one that for me at least, Works. I would be forever indebted. One other thing I would like to change is the phone dialer, I would love Moto Droid one, That just puts a large keypad on the screen, with tabs for contacts, recent etc. Instead of the horrible 1/2 screen one we have. that when you try swiping through the contacts it always dials them!

I have the leak 2.1v3 and am interested in rooting, so that I can get rid of the apps that HTC and Verizon put on my phone. Can I root? Is it decently easy to root? What are the steps to root?I did update my phone from 1.5 to 2.1v1 to 2.1v2 to 2.1v3, so even though I'm not a real technical guy,I was able to install the leaks.

UPDATE: 06/14/10
I'm back on the forums, FINALLY! I finally got fed-up with dealing with Verizon and their rediculas prices. I had 2 phones on my 700 Family Share plan and it was nearly $160 with NO extra features. Just phone. Not internet, no texts, basic NON3G phone.. Looked into other carrirers and found Sprint... What is that? It's HUGE!... It's the EVO 4G. I'M THERE! I am spending the same each month as I was with verizon, with a Smartphone plan. I love it!
Fallow me on the HTC EVO 4G section! http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-4g/
IMPORTANT UPDATE: 04/03/10
I had to make a choice between my Droid Eris and purchasing a vehicle for the future. Of course, the vehicle won; so I no longer have the Eris *pout*. I hope everyone has fun with the future updates and conversations regarding the Eris and 2.x updates. I thank everyone that has helped me out and the 50+ who thanked for this Thread.

I recently updated (OTA) my phone to 2.1 and was experiencing the silent call bug so I called and had a replacement sent to me.My question: How can I tell if the replacement is the OTA 2.1 or the leaked 2.1 since it came with it installed already?

I am running v3 and my wife has the OTA. The OTA is very buggy when compared to my v3. Can I flash her phone to v3? The main bug/problem with her OTA is that the phone constantly puts itself into silent mode. I did not believe it (I thought she was hitting the rocker) until i witnessed it happening. BTW a reset does not fix the issue.

I went to Verizon on my lunch break, and got assisted by the actual store supervisor, which was pretty cool. He was a blackberry guy, and didn't seem to know much about Android. Really nice though. He basically had me do basic diagnostics, but when i explained that it must be hardware in my phone not working since my facebook contacts where not syncing correctly. I also complained about dialer lag, and that i shouldn't have to reset my phone every month to keep it fast.
Now, it's clear that I was running the 2.1 leak. When he compared my settings to the ones on the store's Eris, he goes, "Are you running any other hack or anything on the phone?" I pleaded innocent and was like, "No...I just got the OTA from you guys. I don't know why they're different." He didn't once check the phones "About" section, and seemed to care more about fixing the problem. He had a "tech" look at it, but they couldn't figure anything out.
After 45 minutes or so, he says that if I can show him Facebook syncing on the stores Eris with -my- account, he'd swap the phone as defective for a referb. I did, and he did it, no questions asked. Now, back on 1.5...I also now have a pretty brand new phone. (No scratches or anything). I will say...in the time i had the phone with me at work till getting home now....1.5 is horrible. Oh. My. God. Thank GOD I flashed the leak when I did...the phone is horrible. So, project for tonight is Root. Wish me luck.

I have purchased the tapatalk pro version. I updated to 2.1 and I cannot get it in the market and I could not back it up because it is marked as private. Am I out of luck until 2.1 is released officially so it will show up in the market or is there any way to just get the apk? I did pay for it so Im not trying to get a free file, but if anyone has a way to get it to me I can provide my recept that was emailed to me to show im honest. There were a few other programs, none paid, but ones I liked that dont work with 2.1's market. gUnit and tv.com for instance. All in all I think since those are the only bugs have personally seen in this software all is good

I already tried using the *228 number thing to update my prl but that didn't help. Before the leak i would have three or for bars

I've noticed a couple of bugs in the stock keyboard for the 2.1 leak: In portrait mode, if you overshoot the space bar, and press underneath it, it causes the keyboard to close. And in landscape mode, if you press the grey area to the right of the "L" key, it does the same. Now that I verbalize it, it seems more like the sensitivity areas for the home/menu/return/search keys may be a little larger than they were in 1.5, maybe even extending nearly into the keyboard. I notice myself getting kicked out of typing a lot more due to this than I did with 1.5. I've tried recalibrating but that doesn't seem to help.

I have noticed that on the new leak 2.1 that my Awake Time is almost identical to my Up Time... Its a couple of hours off but i really dont have many apps running... Weatherbug Elite (Updating every hour) Gmail Mail (Exchange - as email arrives) But the phone was pretty much on the charger from 10pm to 6am so not sure what is causing it to be awake.. so out of the 19 hours Up Time - 8 of them I was sleeping.
