Android :: Programmatically Switching GPS On / Off

Oct 4, 2010

I red in these discussion groups that you cannot programmatically turn on/off the GPS : Mark Murphy was exhaustive, as always. But i found a 3rd party App, in the market, that creates a widget capable of switching the GPS on/off. How did they do it? Are they using a different SDK ?

Can I somehow prevent this from happening?

Android :: Switching Launcher Pro

Jun 25, 2010

I've got a short question: currently I'm running adw.launcher but I want to try launcher pro ... So my question is: WHen I install launcherpro and set it as default launcher, should I uninstall adw.launcher to have better performance? And if yes, are my settings and homescreens kept when I want to switch back to adw.launcher some time? I read about performance issues here somewhere, when adw.launcher with 5 full homescreens is running in background and somewhere, people stated one should remove all widgets from the homescreen before switching to a new launcher.

Android :: Switching Off Apps

Jul 9, 2010

I click 'home' and go back to home. But if I go back to an app it's where I left it. I ask Voyager how to get somewhere, then go back to home, and put my HTC Desire to sleep. In the middle of the night I hear a voice saying "Go 100 yards and turn left." so voyager has an exit option in the menu. But what about other apps? They must surely be using up memory and battery power..?

Android :: Speakerphone Switching App

Oct 20, 2010

Is there an app that automatically switches from speakerphone to ear piece based on the proximity detector?

I think it would be useful if there was an app that starts when in phone mode, and detects when the phone is being held to my ear and automatically switches from speaker to ear piece and back as the screen turns off or on based on the proximity detector.

With the more and more frequent state laws on hands free cell phone use while driving, something like this could be quite useful. I, for one would be willing to pay for something like this

But when I'm done chatting, how do I close it? back doesn't work, home doesn't work. I even downloaded the terminal but couldn't kill it with that either. Is that a bug in meebo or is android just like that (no closing of apps)?

Android :: Switching-off/re-booting

Jul 21, 2010

I was just messsing about and flipping through screens and settings and noticed that the phones uptime was at 9 days. This is because at night I either tend to leave it on wifi or just put it to aeroplane mode.

But I was just wondering if there is any benefit to the phones OS or memory if it is occasionally switched off and rebooted? ( apart from saving a little battery obviously). Or is it perfectly acceptable to just keep it running if everything's ok?

Android : Switching Phone For Christmas

Nov 18, 2010

I'm from the UK and currently using an N95 which although I really like is getting a little tired, old and feels slow compared to the newer phones. My contract with Orange is coming up due and they've said I can pick any phone at any price for free so thought I'd switch to android. I'm no stranger to messing with my N95 software so no need to be worried about suggesting a user friendly phone etc or if a phone can be improved by rooting etc. I'm willing to wait if there's anything really nice due in the next month or 2 but I'm basically after the best I can get my hands on especially hardware wise (as I'll have to wait 18 months+ for an upgrade).I've seen there could be new phones being released with 2ghz processors, 1gig ram etc which would allow me to keep up with updates. (I de-branded my n95 so I can use the latest firmware as i really dont like missing out on nice updates) Having a fairly decent camera would be a bonus as I am partial to taking the odd piccy.

General :: Switching To Android From IPhone 4S?

Jan 16, 2014

My contract with Verizon is up in the middle of February and my wife and I are planning on getting new phones and possibly switching carries (possibly to T-Mobile). Based on what's currently available I think if we stay on Verizon we'll get two Moto Xs, but if we switch to T-Mobile we'll go with the Nexus 5. I try to stay up on tech news, but if any new phones are expected in February or early March I'd be interested in hearing about them. I don't want to wait too long because my iPhone is out of warranty and starting to slowly die (for instance the on/off button no longer works).

HTC EVO 4G :: Reasons Used To Justify Switching To Android Still Exist

Jun 10, 2010

A couple of months ago I decided to jump on the Android bandwagon, starting with the Incredible then moving on to the Evo. Everything was going well, life was good, then Apple announces the iPhone 4! I watched the keynote in total awe and drooled when Jon I've explained how glorious the "new" iPhone was and how it will "change everything again." Then the dust settled. The iPhone 4 will be a great phone, however it doesn't offer anything new to me. Virtually all of the reasons I used to justify switching to Android still exist!

My take on the iPhone 4:
Excellent build quality (HTC should take notes)
Fantastic screen
Up to 32 Gig memory
Integrated Video Chat/Conferencing (Wifi Only)
Very thin
It's purdy
Pseudo multitasking
Glass back
For $25 month you can get 2Gig xfer

Here's why I STILL prefer the EVO on Sprint:
WiFi Mobile Hotspot (Saves me $30 per month over my Verizon MIFI)
WiFi Mobile Hotspot allows me to hop on my laptop or my 6 year old to stream Netflix on the iPad!
Sprint TV
Unlimited data baby!
4G
Text to Speech
Speech to Text
HDMI out
8 Megapixel w/dual Flash
Replaceable battery
Turn by turn directions
Voice search
I can VPN to my work computer
3G coverage! I paid $30 per month for Edge on the iPhone! Sprint offers 3G!
Ability to video chat over 3G/4G (Been using Fring)
Ability to transfer files via FTP to my host account
I can select an app to install without being kicked out of the Market!
I have the ability to create ringtones on the fly. No need to pay an additional fee to iTunes to "convert" a song.
Live wallpapers!
Built in radio
I've found the Amazon MP3 store to be much cheaper than iTunes. For example, Fray's "The Fray" is $9.99 on itunes vs. $5.00 on Amazon MP3!
Flash Lite
I can rotate my photos
I can expand my memory
Sprints plans are cheap as hell compared to AT&T
I can email photos at full resolution
How many times have iPhone users purchased an app, only to be disappointed? On the Market, you have 24 hours to test drive. Don't like it, full refund.
Notifications
Widgets

In all honesty, both phones are mind blowing. Look at the big picture and select what phone/service will benefit you the most.

Android :: Changing Screens - Switching Between Layouts

Jun 1, 2010

I am trying to create an app for android 1.5 which would be organized around 4-5 'screen's that will be changing in a given order.

So I start ma app with the first screen, which it's background and a button. When I click on the button a new screen appears with a different background and different options which lead to next screens. Sth. that is usually seen in games. The problem is that I need to pass a lot of data between those 'screens' like and array with recorded sound. My idea was to create a separate xml layout file for each screen and change the context in the activity class so ie:

CODE:............

A simple test app for 3 screens works this way but my I don't really like this approach and it seems to be inappropriate.

Is this the correct way of organizing such an app in android or should I take another approach - if I should, please give a more detailed advice on how to do this.

Android :: Switching Between Views Without Loosing OnClickListeners

Aug 29, 2010

On my application I'm developing, the main.xml layout (the default layout of my app) has a few buttons that have been assigned onClickListeners (not the implementation way). One of those buttons I want to have the ability to take you to another view. On the other view (preview.xml), there's another button that takes you back to the main.xml view. I've used setContentView in the onClickListeners of those buttons and this works fine so far, but after you click the button that takes you back to main.xml, the buttons on main.xml have lost their onClick functionalities. How can I get this to work right? I presume using setContentView isn't the right way to do this?

Android :: Settings / Profile Switching App - Not Locale

Nov 6, 2009

I'm looking for an app that will allow me to set up different profiles for phone settings that can be switched easily by choosing a "profile" from a list.I DON'T want Locale. i want to be able to do this by choosing from a list, NOT based on my location. For example, a user could set up a Power Saver profile, a Power User profile, an Online Profile, etc. Each of these profiles should be customizable. For example, I should be able to customize the "Power Saver" profile to the power settings I want (ie. Screen brightness, WiFi off, Bluetooth Off, Syncing Off, etc).Is there anything like this? Ideally I'm hoping for something that has a free version, as I am in Canada and we can't get paid apps yet.For the record, I am using Useful Switchers, but I don't want to have to go through all the various steps each time I want to go back and forth from power saving and using my phone online.

Android :: Locale - Not Switching Back To Defaults

Dec 1, 2008

new to Android, G1 and the forums Wondered if any of you can help?
I have 4 things set up in locale
1) turn on silent when at work
2) turn on Wi-fi when at home
3) turn on silent 6:30PM to 7:30PM (when getting my son to bed)
4) turn on silent 11PM to 8AM (so no emails are waking me!) number 2 works fine, the problem however is with the silent ones, ALL of them never go back to the default (ringer at full volume) when the time is up or when I'm away from the location. any ideas? I don't have GPS on, but the distance from home to work is large so it can't think I'm still anywhere near there plus that won't affect the time related ones.

Android :: Switching From IPod Touch To Droid?

Jul 9, 2010

I am currently using a dumb phone and an iPod Touch for my mobile needs. I was hoping Apple would come out with a Verizon model, but that may or may not ever happen. I have been reading about the new Droid X and have been impressed with what I've read. However, I have a number of apps on my iPod that I use on a regular basis and am wondering how happy I would be with what's available for the Droid.I am using Gmail, so that's not a problem. I use Apple's address book and have not been satisfied with the way Google handles that, so I would need to be able to sync my contacts to Apple. I have tons of music and audio books in iTunes, I have a number of books from Audible.com, and I use Fluent News for the iPod for my newspaper fix (along with an AP app, the NY Times, and USA Today). I have a diet program that keeps my meals on the iPod, not on the web, and allows me to quickly enter without any fuss the foods I eat and gives me a balance of how many calories I have left (and allows me to customize the food bank without having to scan through hundreds of foods I don't eat). I have a few e-books from Project Gutenberg that I read on Stanza, though any e-book program that would allow me to access them would work fine. I also keep my ToDo list on Toodledo and use their iPod app to access it on the move.

Have any of you made the move from an iPod or iPhone to a Droid? How happy are you with the apps. Would the Droid have apps that would give me what I have above (not the same developers, of course, but something comparable)? I've done some reading and my son-in-law let me play with an older model Droid, but before I invest, I would like to know more. I can return the Droid X to Verizon within 30 days with a re-stocking fee, so a switch that didn't work wouldn't be devastating, but I hate to invest the time if I don't have a good chance of being satisfied.

Android :: Switching Between Listviews Without Changing Layout?

Nov 8, 2010

I'm not looking for exact code here, just a direction on what to look for and what I should be reading about so I can figure this out. I have a layout that I would like to remain static, with only the listview changing depending on what's selected from the list. I've reloaded data in the list, but I would like the fancy transition animations between choices, and would like the app to go to the previous menu when pressing back.

Someone suggested using a viewswitcher, which seems like it'd be great, but I am still unsure about how to fill a listview in a layout with a regular row layout, then on selection do an animated transition to a custom row. Also, it seems the viewswitcher is limited to two views, so it may be a limitation when I want to go a few menus deeper. Preferably, I'd like to put each menu in it's own class so that I can handle filling it in that class, if possible...
