Android : Switching Phone For Christmas
Nov 18, 2010
I'm from the UK and currently using an N95 which although I really like is getting a little tired, old and feels slow compared to the newer phones. My contract with Orange is coming up due and they've said I can pick any phone at any price for free so thought I'd switch to android. I'm no stranger to messing with my N95 software so no need to be worried about suggesting a user friendly phone etc or if a phone can be improved by rooting etc. I'm willing to wait if there's anything really nice due in the next month or 2 but I'm basically after the best I can get my hands on especially hardware wise (as I'll have to wait 18 months+ for an upgrade).I've seen there could be new phones being released with 2ghz processors, 1gig ram etc which would allow me to keep up with updates. (I de-branded my n95 so I can use the latest firmware as i really dont like missing out on nice updates) Having a fairly decent camera would be a bonus as I am partial to taking the odd piccy.

My G1 phone slows down after a while from switching it on, and if I switched off and re-switched it on it will get back to its normal state. So any clue why is that happening? I downloaded many apps from the market, is that the reason? and is there any application that shows the running applications in the background and their CPU and memory usage? And when I open the messaging and scroll through the messages it is way too slow.

Does switching activities in Android start a fresh JVM? It seems like each activity is meant to run as its own "main" method. If I have a singleton (via Guice, not an actual singleton in this case) should I expect to be re-creating it every time I switch activities?

Just had an issue today with the phone after I got off of NYC Maximas.org and went back to the home screen. The phone decided to have a mind of its own and was actually switching between screens itself. Every time I hit the home button it would switch to screen 2 and three and so on and so on. Also when I tried to text right after that I was unable to input text for w.e. reason. After a shut off and turn on of the phone the issue was resolved; "weird". Anyone else having this problem?

I was wondering if I can easily switch from 2.0.1 and Humancyborgs 2.1 rom on my Droid. My droid is rooted and I have run the 2.1 rom but I switched back to 2.0.1 because of some issues with the rom. I am hoping it is just a matter of swapping out the Nandroid files like I did when I returned to 2.0.1. I am missing the cool features of 2.1!

Anyone having issues with their phone changing itself to Silent mode? Every morning, I switch to Vibrate before I go to work. At roughly 9:00, the phone will then change itself to Silent mode without me doing anything. The only thing I can think of is that I used to use the app "Settings Profiles" to do changes for me automatically. I wasnt crazy about it though so Ive uninstalled it. The program no longer shows up for me so I dont think thats the problem.

I have a samsung Galaxy S3 with Android version 4.1.2.
I commute between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland (UK) every week so my phone goes to roaming settings. I am on the Three network down south and so long as my phone connects to Three (UK) when it roams i dont get charged a cent. Sometimes it likes to jump to O2 or other networks and it is costing me a lot of money. Is there a way to fix the network its allowed to connect to without turning off the "roaming" setting?

After 2 years I am finally back from iOS to Android 4.4.2 on my new Nexus 5.
I flashed the newest version Paranoid Android and now I am seeking for a lockscreen layout that can replace the iOS lockscreen notifications I got really used to.
Dashclock combined with Dash Notifier seems like a good alternative but I now have some strange lockscreen behaviour of which I don't know if it's normal or because of some settings I missed.
Every time I expand / shrink for security code input I see a semi transparent white rectangle (as seen in the pictures attached).
Is this normal? If not is there any setting I missed, if yes, is there any possibility to avoid this? I don't use any lockscreen replacement at the moment...

I am trying to create an input method which has some heavy initialization to do in OnCreate(). The problem is whenever i am switching to my Ime from another ime, it is taking 2-3 seconds to initialize and in mean time if i press edit text repeatedly, OnCreate() and OnDestroy() of my IME are called multiple times. Can I somehow prevent this from happening?

I've got a short question: currently I'm running adw.launcher but I want to try launcher pro ... So my question is: WHen I install launcherpro and set it as default launcher, should I uninstall adw.launcher to have better performance? And if yes, are my settings and homescreens kept when I want to switch back to adw.launcher some time? I read about performance issues here somewhere, when adw.launcher with 5 full homescreens is running in background and somewhere, people stated one should remove all widgets from the homescreen before switching to a new launcher.

I click 'home' and go back to home. But if I go back to an app it's where I left it. I ask Voyager how to get somewhere, then go back to home, and put my HTC Desire to sleep. In the middle of the night I hear a voice saying "Go 100 yards and turn left." so voyager has an exit option in the menu. But what about other apps? They must surely be using up memory and battery power..?
