Android :: Installing Applications From Installers - Wheres Installer?
Apr 6, 2009
Couple of really big issues here that SHOULD be no brainers! But, they aren't. Anyone know what the EXACT name of an application installer on the Market that allows me to install appliations from the memory card? I've been looking for a few weeks now. A search for application installers that allow me to install a .apk file from the memory card turn up mentions about "Apps Installer" and "Application Installer", but I can't find anything with that name in the Android Market. Partial name searches like "Installer" turn up NO results. (That's not very "Google Like", now isn't it? The Android Market website, BTW doesn't allow you to search? Is that right? You can only search the Android Market from the phone? I can understand not allowing us to DOWNLOAD from the market to our PC, but not search so I can find the appliation name I want? I hope you guys can implement that in the next android updates. It is really cool that all the applications are free, but the G1 phone doesn't have a lot of on board memory, so please implement the feature to install applications on the SD Card. That is the only comment I have. A lot of people are Jailbreaking their phones just so they can get to that feature. Please consider it. Thank you. One more thing-If you can make it possible to save the browser cache data on the SD card as well will be awesome.

I understand there are two ways to distribute one's apps: 1) through the Market and 2) directly to the user. Now that my app is in beta, I would like to give it to a few of my users to test. But how? What I read on the web talks about installing SDKs, tweaking with many options and using an auxiliary app; I deem these to be well beyond the ability or patience of my users. Is there an easier way? What's the EASIEST?
It would be best if the user can simply navigate to the link and download it using their android phone. Is this possible? I am trying to figure out how to instruct my users to download and install it painlessly. (taking the SD card out for intermediate installation is not painless and is prohibitively intimidating). this is a keyboard that you need to invoke, twice, after you install it. Once through Settings> Languages and Keyboards, and the second time through tapping and holding on the text field and selecting. Oh and it's called MessagEase-beta

I just got an Android phone on Sunday and I'm still learning what I'm doing. I found a thread on here for the Android Network Awards, and all of the apps have a 2-D barcode next to them. Clicking on it invokes a "market" protocol. I'm guessing that there may be some way for me to scan this barcode from my phone and install the app. Is that right? Presumably, I could also browse to the page from my phone and click on the "market://..." links, but scanning a barcode to install an app is just cool.

Can someone please tell me how to install apps directly onto the microSD card? Even brand new the HTC Desire seems to only have 100MB to download and install applications on so I find it much more sense being able to store and install them on a 32GB microSD card. My internal memory is full now and I barely have any apps installed on it yet have about 900 applications I can install so I at least want to put more on!

As a soon to be former BB user (and hopeful Android newbie), I know the limitations of decreased On Board Memory (I'm not talking about RAM but rather the memory that apps are stored on). I notice some phones have as much as 8 GB and some high end phones only coming with 2 GB (and after the OS and bloat is installed it gets reduced to 300-400 MB). Is this a concern with an android device. I understand that phones can be rooted and bloat ware removed, but taking that out of the equation, should I be concerned with buying a phone with just 2 GB of On Board memory for apps?

I have an app which has a download size of about 7MB and an installed/ configured size of about 25MB. So far, I've been handling this by using the SD card for the baulk of the data. This works fine although the installation process is a little cumbersome. I notice the smallest of the Archos 5 tablets is 8GB.
Can someone confirm whether this is all part of the internal memory? In other words, can /data/data/com.mypackage fill this memory (potentially). If so, does this mean there is a good chance that getExternalStorageDirectory() will quite often return null? Because people will have less need to use an external SD card.

I have rooted my captivate, but don't know how to use it yet! I am still a newb to this! But I found and application called "tattachapkinstaller" where it lets you install apps from gmail. But the problem is when I tried to use the app it would say "install blocked: for security, your phone is set to block installation of application not sourced in android market". I thought rooting the phone will allow me to?

I installed the official 2.1 update. I'm loving a lot about it. However when i installed a barcode reader like Barcode reader and Shop Savvy, I lost all connections to the internet, the market, Email, and even the weather. I was able to use the phone and text, but that was it. Then last night I installed the XDA keyboard, and I again lost all my data connections except phone and text. Is there a setting I need to change? or any other ideas for how to fix this issue? I should be able to install apps and not loose data connections. Should I try reinstalling the update?
Also, the battery seems to last just a tade less longer than 1.5 did. But no worries there. Would like to install apps without loosing connections. Photoshop, Google Goggles, History eraser, Astro file manager, Google maps (update i think), Shazam, Facebook, 3Banana notes, and Pandora. All that is on my home screen that might interfer with something is the clock with the weather widget, the people favorites widget, and that's all. Otherwise the home screens are just icons to the apps I use. Not sure if any of this helps sovle my problem.

I've seen many threads on the crappy side asking how to side load apps (installing non market apps) well you can root (look for the sticky in our forum) or you just use the Side loading Wonder Machine with no need to root. I use it all the time (just got me an Oregon Trail apk anyway, just follow the instructions and you'll be happy. I would make two minor corrections though. I downloaded the samsung drivers from samsung them selfs. Also make sure you have the apk in the same folder as the wonder machine heres a video.

Anyone ever had this happen? Downloaded an update after the 2.1 upgrade and I sync'd my contacts with FB. It then deleted all of my contacts. So I deleted Facebook, re-stored all my contacts and reloaded Facebook. However, now it gets as far as installing and it never stops. It just stays on Installing. However, the FB app works fine on the phone itself. Is this a Market glitch? Is there anyway I can purge it from out of my downloads section?

Is there a way to install Astro File manager without using the market? Because if I would need to install APKs in a situation where I don't have access to the market (No Internet access, etc.) I would need to use Astro File Manager and if I didn't have it installed I would need a way to install it without using the standard way of using the market.it would save me bandwidth to install it from the SD Card each time.

When you scan a qr code, the Dx auto downloads the application installer and executes it. Is there a way (possibly on the pc instead) to just download the app installer, and archive it for later use? I'm thinking about things like fancy widgets, that had to be removed, updated apps that are not as attractive as the original release, or applictions that might just vanish over time. They are all small, and I'd prefer to archive them on our PC, just in case. Is there a way to pull the installers off the internal memory of the phone?

I developed an "heavy" application (700 Mb !). With an "apk installer" application, i can install it on the Nexus One SD card (Froyo "installLocation" option). My application is heavy because of the videos it contains (located in /raw directory). The problem I have, is that it crashes when launched, with this error :
CODE:............
I dont't understand the reason of this error, because when i try the same thing with a lighter application (250 Mb) it runs perfectly. Has anyone of you ever had this kind of problem ? Do you know if there is a size limit for applications to work ?

In Windows, we write "installer script", and user an "installer compiler" to generate an installer, let's say .inf for .msi/.cab and .nsi for NSIS.
But when it comes to Android, is there a similar method?

When providing a user on a mobile, a link to an android application via a web page, it is possible for params from the url to be passed to the app being installed.
I'm guessing the answer is no - but it doesn't help to ask.
The reasoning being that it would be handy for some situations to have a generic app that pulls config information from the referrer.

The package installer looks to take up a good amount of space when installing applications. We've published a very large game (ProjectINF - 6mb). And it looks to be taking up a good amount of space during the install process, to the point that we have a lot of users emailing us with complaints/requests to "fix it".
From what we've seen, it looks to take about 22mb of free space to install a 6mb apk. While I can imagine taking double or so for unpacking and temp locations, almost 4x the size seems a bit high. After an install with 22mb free, the device has 16mb free (which makes perfect sense). Users also seem to be getting errors on the market when trying to install with less than that amount of space (with no real clear error message, just "Install Failed".

I have some problem installing my apk file in code. Wondering if anyone could find out what I did wrong.
What I was trying to do is put a Check Upgrade function in our program. When user clicks it, it will send request to our web server and find out what is the latest version. I use app versionName to stamp a version, something like 2010.11.23. I don't use the version code in Manifest.xml file. So our program sees the latest VersionName is later than itself, it will download the latest one, and then use the following code to install the new apk file:
CODE:........
Now looks like, everytime when I changed the VersionName, it will fail to install the apk file. It downloads the file fine. I don't know exactly why. Sometimes, in Eclips, when I hit debug, I got error saying "Re-installation failed due to different application signatures". I don't know if this is the same error caused the installation failed.
So, looks like my questions are:
Should that upgrade logic work? I am wondering if it has something to do with the VersoinName.
What could cause the application signature change? (I did sign our program before I put it on our server, but I always use the same key file for different versionName. )
