Sprint HTC Hero :: What Does The Release Of The 2.1 HTC Kernal Mean?
Jan 22, 2010I have been debating rooting and using Fresh 1.1 and was possibly going to do it over lunch today at work, however, i have a question:
With HTC releasing the kernal for 2.1 for the Hero today, what does this mean for me (the unrooted Hero user looking forward to 2.1)?
Is it any indication as to the update being released soon? I know the 99.9% answer to that is "it's up to Sprint to release it" and the 100% answer to that question is "your guess is as good as mine", but historically speaking, when the kernal for a build is released, what timeframe usually exists between kernal release and upgrade release? I guess the bigger question is, what exactly is a "kernal"?
I know most everyone is going to say "root, once 2.1 is released, the cooks will have the rooted version available shortly after" or "root, and if it does come out, you can always flash back the stock RUU and upgrade OTA then", but the think is, I dont' want to root and then with my luck, 2.1 gets released next week
Just looking for some insight/best guesses.
Also, while on rooting, I actually brought a separate microSD card to make the Nandroid backup on. Is this a good/bad idea? Is the best way to do this to make a copy of the SD card on the PC, do the root and flash with a clean card) and then copy everything back to the card? I have an 8 GB card that is nearly full. Don't know how much space is required on the card to root/flash.

It now saysmy firmware version is 1.5 and software version is 1.56.651.2 not really sure but I thought I was reading people are on version 2.0 and higher not sure but anyway do Ihave to go to the Sprint website or the HTC website for the newer version if there is in fact one?

Mar 27, 2010I know this is a rather odd question, but, I know that on the damageless rom, it defaults to locate for GSM Radio Towers. Now, I know there is two HTC Hero devices, The Eris (GSM Version) and the Hero (CDMA Version), however the ability to search for different towers in the Damageless rom has me intrigued on if it is possible at all.
Why I ask is, I am going out of the country, specifically to the carribean islands and mexico. I am wondering if it is at all possible to use it like that. I really doubt it because I don't think that the CDMA version is backwards compatible with the GSM version, but I thought I might as well ask.

Sep 18, 2010i just discovered that in the ROM manager app you can update your clockworkmod recovery version, i updated to v2.5.0.1 and when i boot into recovery mode it looks completely different now, its a different color green, its got different options, and instead of pressing home as the ok you have to scroll down past like 7 no's to get to yes. is it supposed to be like this and should i always keep it updated? is there anything else i should always check updates for? im running froyo nightlys on a (sprint) cdma htc hero with google

Nov 10, 2009So it's widely known that soft resets of this phone causes problems with the icons as well as displayed program names.Has anyone noticed that soft resets also revert some of your programs back to earlier versions? The 2 I've noticed most often are Pandora and Mybackuppro. For example, the current version of Pandora is 1.1.1. When I upgraded from 1.1.0 in the marketplace, I installed over the old version and everything was working fine. After a soft reset, I noticed that the opening splash screen for Pandora listed 1.1.0, but the listing under my downloads in the app store didn't list an upgrade needed. I had to uninstall 1.1.0 and reinstall 1.1.1. I had that version on for about a week until I had another soft reset. Sure enough, I'm back to Pandora 1.1.0. The same thing happened with mybackuppro.This is far more irritating than screwing up the icons or displayed name, because this is actually changing what version of the software we're using.early adopters being the beta testers for mobile manufacturers and carriers.

Sep 16, 2010after installing 2.2 on my hero, everything was working fine, until now. im having problems with my text messages, they wont send under sprints network, if i put it in roaming then they send right away, but roaming has awefully slow (1x) network speeds, but if i put it back to the 3g network speeds of sprint then everytime i try to send a text it just swirls in circles (the little thing next to the message) and wont send. is this sprints network being down? or does this have to do with the 2.2 update?i dont think its sprint because my mom and sister arent having any problems with there phones from the same plan. but i tryed restarting many times, taking out and leaving out the battery, putting it in airplane mode and turning that back off to reset connection, iv tryed everything and cant get it to work, so idk what to do, and i dont understand why if it was a software problem with the 2.2 installation, why would they send in roaming but not on sprints network?

Jul 5, 2010I have read a couple of threads that touched on this ring issue, but was unable to find any that had a solution or work around.Since the 2.1 update and the OTA update, many times when an incoming call comes, the phone doesn't ring. If I happen to be in front of the phone, I can see the screen change showing an incoming call.If I am listening to Pandora Radio, when the phone rings, Pandora stops, but the phone never rings.If I am not near or looking at the phone this results in missing the call.If I shut off the phone and re-boot it appears to ring fine, but at some point later in the day or week it will quit ringing.I normally never turn off the phone. Should I start to re-boot every day?

May 18, 2010I just got a Telus version of the HTC Hero. Coming from an iPhone, I've been through some of the 'root/jailbreak' scenes, so most things are familiar. However, making the transition to the Anrdoid OS, there's many things I'm not understanding. Currently the Hero is running 1.5 (can that be updated). I tried running Instant Root and it failed. So I tried the Gold Card method (Eh, not too bad) and no luck with that. I'm not sure where to start, since the guides mentioned in the stickies for root don't work for me. I'm just a confused newbie with the Android customization scene.

Sep 10, 2010iv heard ppl who downloaded android 2.2 online and installed it themselves on there phone since its not being offered ota. but im wondering if its safe? the phone is not actually getting 2.2 ever, so doing this would be my own choice. but im wondering if it will run smoothly, better than 2.1 update 1, and if there will be any problems or if anything that may not work because of compatability problems with the phone. because some people have said that 2.2 isnt being released to the hero because the phone is not physically capeable of it do to software and hardware (such as space ram speeds etc.), and others have said they installed it themselves and it works fine, that its actually made to run using less space then 2.1 making it better.
