I'm rooting my cdma htc hero with google from sprint and one thing people say to do is nandroid. i read that you do this after rooting and before updating roms, but i have to ruu before i can root because my build number is 2.27.651.6 and has to be .5 so this will clear it off... anyway to backup device before i do this? anything other than nandroid? or a way to do it before rooting?

I click flash clockwork mod recovery it auto senses my phone cdma htc hero. I click on the hero, and nothing happens, I never receive a successfully flashed.

the diagnostic showed I am green in all areas
I click on the nandroid backup and it reboots my phone and brings up a HTC splash screen.
basically I have to pull out the battery to get phone functionality back. I have read else where that I can hold volume down and power to bring up a recovery mod (this works) but I am not sure what to do when I get there.
Prior to switching ROMs back and forth, I was able to nandroid off of my phone with no issue. Now, I cannot and at first I found it slightly alarming, but then I brushed it off. However, I feel like something might be wrong with my phone? Help?
Also, recently (as in today). My phone has been sending messages to other people, randomly. I got a phone call from my mother but it popped up as a totally different number.
cant nandroid restore error: run 'nandroid-mobile.sh restore' via adb!this is the error message i get every time i try to restore a new android.what is up with this?

Now my question is since I did not flash a custom ROM on to my device will I be able to update the phone when Sprint releases the OTA Update or will I have to use the RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_1.56.651.2_signed_release.exe to put my phone back to factory stock. (Also can I just do a hard reset to accomplish the same thing).

So I've tried and tried again using RA and other linux based programs (GParted) to get my 8GB card to partition for apps2sd. Everything always runs smoothly and shows that the card is partitioned correctly. But then upon reboot the SD card shows full fat32 memory (6.9 GB). No matter what I do, after reboot, the partitions never happen. When I used GParted, and then loaded the SD card on the phone it always says that the SD card is damaged and I need to reformat. I've done that and rerun everything to no avail. Someone please tell me this issue is that the SD card is corrupted and I should give up. Because I've followed everything to a T as far as partitioning. With that I'll say that I had no problems rooting my phone, flashing ROM's/RA's, etc, and have been able to do whatever I want as far as new things to load. I've finally decided after all this time to do apps2sd, and I literally screwed around for 5+ hrs today, trying to partition the SD card properly. Any thoughts?

I know some of those apps Sprint probably sold their soul to have on the phone but some of it is just trash. I'm not looking to clear up memory or any performance improvements. I just want to do some house cleaning of junk that I will NEVER use. I was hoping for maybe an unlock code or something simpler then the root/rom way to go. I'm very satisfied with the way things are working now but some of that garbage has got to go. I know junk is standard bill of fare on new computers but you can go through and systematically delete the garbage but I'm a little offended to have something that I bought and paid for and can't even clear out the junk and personalize it to my taste.

Once up and running, does the Nandroid backup work on this configuration? Or must you keep your files in the Hero to get a functional backup? Now using the 1.6.2 version of RA.

I forgot to wipe before restoring a nandroid (DC2.08.1) last night, and subsequently have made some changes. Everything seems to be working OK. I will make a new Nandroid backup.
Is there any benefit to then wiping and restoring that new nandroid backup? Or will the backup just re-install what I have just wiped? Sorry, I don't understand what exactly is being wiped.
I keep trying these different roms but always have to nandroid restore just to get my contacts back or else they are gone...google wont sync all of them and I tried the export contact app but it didnt save but half of them So what can I do to save my contacts without the nandroid?

View 20 Replies View RelatedAbout two days ago the DamageControl2.0r ROM started giving me the WiFi issues, and where I am with no EVDO or even E network. I rely on the WiFi at work and home, and wherever else I may need it. So I attempted to flash back to Fresh2.0c using the wipe/reboot and all the normal steps. Well it kept booting back to the Damage Control ROM. Someone suggested I use Nanroid backup then tried reflashing the rom. Which ended up working. Well I then decided I wanted to try the New Kitchen, because I love tinkering with this stuff, and it wouldn't flash again. I had to use Nandroid backup to go back to Fresh2.0c and have it working properly. Is there something I could be missing completely?

I know the commands I need to run in adb to flash the recovery image but I do not know where to download the recovery image or where I need to store it I also can't find anything on nandroid back could somone please explain these in detail with the steps I need to take so I don't need to start from square one again.

View 6 Replies View RelatedLet me start off by saying I did/still do have a nandroid and also a custom ROM zip on my SD. I used the ROM manager application to wipe data/cache, like I have done about 10 times this past week, and flashed a new ROM. So my phone reboots to recovery, "clockwork mod recovery", you have to use this recovery to use ROM manager, and instead of flashing the ROM, it gives me some error message. Now for anyone who isn't familiar with clockwork recovery, you can't flash a nandroid from it, you have to revert back to the stock recovery to flash a nandroid, or at least I do.
So now all I can do is reboot my hero which brings me back to stock 2.1 with no root access. Now I know what your thinking, "just flash your nandroid", but now I can't. To flash my nandroid I would have to reflash the stock recovery image through ROM manager, and now I'm stuck with the clockwork recovery image because ROM manager requires root to swap recoveries, and no ability to nandroid back to where I was before. Basically, unless there is a way to change my recovery back to stock without being rooted currently.
I wanted to change the Google account that my phone was linked to, so I cleared the google app. Now when I try to sign in using my google account to link the phone with the phone (the new one or the old one) it asks for my login info, then says Signing in and says it may take up to 5 minutes. Then it gives me a message that says: "Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server. This could be a temporary problem or your SIM card may not be provisioned for data services. If it continues, call Customer Care." I have called customer care and they can't figure it out. They told me I need to go to a Sprint Store that does service, but there isn't one very close to me, so I'd rather not take half a day to drive there if I don't have to.
I have full bars and everything else works great. I can get my email, use the internet and do everything else that doesn't require the use of the google account. But I can't use the google mail feature or go to the Marketplace. I'm using 1.56.651.2 and haven't really done anything else to the phone as far as changing settings or rooting or anything.
Anybody have any luck downloading and running Google Earth on a Sprint Hero 2.1?
View 10 Replies View RelatedSo just starting like about a week ago, my phone will reboot if i go into google maps.I press google maps, press menu, then the screen goes to the white background with green htc, and reboots.This happens all the time without fail.This sucks cuz I use the google maps a lot as a traffic report and gps.This is not good.The hero has too many problems.I feel like nothing works properly on this phone.. anyone else have this problem? fix?
View 13 Replies View RelatedA couple of times now I've had this problem on my Hero, and today it was a huge pain in the ass, as I was looking for the place I was headed to but couldn't find it.The problem is my Google Maps couldn't lock onto my signal it was jumping all over the state at first told me I was in Sacramento (one of the turn directions next to it had a misspelling "Socramento", wtf?), then Santa Rosa, then as I kept driving and pressing My Location, it switched to a random street about a mile away, then dumped me in the ocean.During this time, the GPS icon kept blinking and didn't stay solid. Also, once it picked up a location, it didn't continue to update it as it should do.I had to restart the phone and I think it's working OK now but this is at least the 2nd time it's happened to me.
