I am debating between the Hero and the Moment. I have a few ?'s. What is the purpose of rooting, what features do you not have IF you choose not to root and does rooting void your warranty on the phone?

Does rooting void your warranty?
I have been Googling and some say it does, and some say it doesn't!
Could anyone give me a straight and correct answer?
I should "root" my Droid X phone, something ive not heard of before -
1) does this void the manufacturer warranty, or the $6/month im paying for verizon accidental damage warranty
2) is there a way to restore the original settings on the phone, ie make it like the root never happened if i need to? so i dont lose warranty?
I am sorta shocked, only for the fact that he freakd out that I had installed a new custom boot screen and told him that rooting doesn't neccessarily remove anything sprint puts on the phone. I guess more shocked that he knew what it was.
Regardless, if I own the phone, I am going to do what ever hat I want to it even if it voids the warranty because that shouldn't be an issue.
Ok. First things first, I am simply in love with my Droid. I learn new things everyday. For example, yesterday i took a picture on a trip, and on the ride home, went to look at the picture in my gallery, and under the picture it read Dayton, Ohio. It knew where I took the picture!
Anyways enough of my droid love, i've got some questions for you droid gurus.
1. I want to root my phone so badly. Im afraid of it bricking though. But the thing is, ive done a lot of research, and it seems bricking hardly ever happens. I want to overclock and i really want some kick ass ROMS! Should i do on pc or my pro?
2. My screen, when closed, when you tap on the screen near the lower left corner, the screen taps. Like the screen is loose. I wanna take it to verizon. But i wanna root. But i want my warranty still usable.
I updated my phone to the 2.2 through a link i found on a thread here. There was no disclaimer on the link saying this will void my warranty, so i went ahead with it. No that I am doing more research, it seems the I might have voided my warranty due to my impatience :/
Can anyone confirm or deny this? If it DOES void my warranty, how does verizon know that I did a downloaded update rather than an OTA update.
I wonder if VZW would void the manufacturer warranty because of this? There are some issues with radio and signal quality, home screen swiping and phantom app openings .....
View 3 Replies View RelatedI briefly spoke to SE UK on the facebook page and asked about de-branding the phone, I was told that was would void my warranty but the only explanation given was that 'thisis classed as tampering. It is also not something we would recommend as this could damage your handset'
I followed up with a couple more questions but have recieved no reply so thought I would bring it over here instead.
First up, de-branding the phone does not involve rooting it so the process of rooting can't be the reason for the void.
I want to know why updating the phone with an official, SE approved update voids the warranty?
I also want to know why Sony themselves don't provide an option of just updating the phone with the generic update instead of making us wait for the networks to release it?
Or is this all simply about money, are Vodafone etc paying SE a healthy amount to not let us de-brand and remove the useless unused app's that they put on?
My carrier told me my phone comes with the 1 yr warranty from Sony, but once I update with the 2.1 my warranty is void. Even though it is Sony who is putting it out. They said it voids it because that is not the way the phone was sold. I still have 11 1/2 months left on this warranty so I am not sure what to do.

View 21 Replies View RelatedI have rooted my phone just to delete some of the sprint crap apps. Now my question is since I did not flash a custom ROM on to my device will I be able to update the phone when Sprint releases the OTA Update or will I have to use the RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_1.56.651.2_signed_release.exe to put my phone back to factory stock. (Also can I just do a hard reset to accomplish the same thing).

So I've tried and tried again using RA and other linux based programs (GParted) to get my 8GB card to partition for apps2sd. Everything always runs smoothly and shows that the card is partitioned correctly. But then upon reboot the SD card shows full fat32 memory (6.9 GB). No matter what I do, after reboot, the partitions never happen. When I used GParted, and then loaded the SD card on the phone it always says that the SD card is damaged and I need to reformat. I've done that and rerun everything to no avail. Someone please tell me this issue is that the SD card is corrupted and I should give up. Because I've followed everything to a T as far as partitioning. With that I'll say that I had no problems rooting my phone, flashing ROM's/RA's, etc, and have been able to do whatever I want as far as new things to load. I've finally decided after all this time to do apps2sd, and I literally screwed around for 5+ hrs today, trying to partition the SD card properly. Any thoughts?
View 8 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to remove some of the Sprint Bloatware without rooting the phone. I know some of those apps Sprint probably sold their soul to have on the phone but some of it is just trash. I'm not looking to clear up memory or any performance improvements. I just want to do some house cleaning of junk that I will NEVER use. I was hoping for maybe an unlock code or something simpler then the root/rom way to go. I'm very satisfied with the way things are working now but some of that garbage has got to go. I know junk is standard bill of fare on new computers but you can go through and systematically delete the garbage but I'm a little offended to have something that I bought and paid for and can't even clear out the junk and personalize it to my taste.
View 23 Replies View RelatedI'm rooting my cdma htc hero with google from sprint and one thing people say to do is nandroid. i read that you do this after rooting and before updating roms, but i have to ruu before i can root because my build number is 2.27.651.6 and has to be .5 so this will clear it off... anyway to backup device before i do this? anything other than nandroid? or a way to do it before rooting?

1. What is the risk of bricking my device really? Has anyone here ever had a problem with it before?
2. Does rooting absolutely void your warranty no matter what?
3. If it does void your warranty, can they turn you down if your phone breaks for something unrelated to rooting? For example if I root my phone now, and then 4 months later I drop it and it breaks will they fix it?
4. How do they know if you rooted your phone? If I brick it accidentally is there any way for them to know that it was rooted if I don't tell them? I mean it could have just as easily been a manufacturing error, they wouldn't know until they've restored it to it's original state.
I've been lurking for a while. I seem to be having trouble rooting my phone, all the one click programs for the CDMA Hero seem to be only for sprint builds, I got my phone through a smaller network (CREDO Mobile) and every root program I've tried seems to fail.

Everything was going great the first couple of days, apps were running so much smoother the lag had completely stoped, but the last couple of days my phone stared lagging again much more then before rooting. I did a soft reset and a hard reset but it wont help at all.

I enjoy my Hero although yes it is slow at times. I love watching my SprintTV on my phone and listening to Pandora. I have read that if I but a custom ROM on and SetCPU and a few other goodies, I can speed the phone up a lot and have a better experience. I also hear that I can tether without having to use PDANet.
1. Can I still use Sprint TV?
2. Is the speed boost really worth installing a Custom ROM
3. What is the benefit of just Rooting the phone and keeping the Stock ROM?
4. I see this voids the warranty, but if you put the stock software back on the phone, does sprint ever know that you rooted if you take it in for service?
5. And can some of you that have done this process list out the top 5 favorite features you got out of this. Makes these actual results, not just what you heard about.
I just bought an EVO and like the features however its just to bulky of a phone for me . So I am going to go with the HERO.
I was told by sprint that if I upgrade to the 2.1 with the HERO I may have issues, that it was not designed for this upgrade in mind. Should I stick with the previous release?
Another option is, should I root the phone ( which I have no idea what that is) so I can get the 2.2 version when it comes out or maybe stick with the 2.1 version and with the rooted phone it will work properly.
I'm so confused, I consider myself pretty tech savvy but coming from a BB I'm new to all of this. Any help would be appreciated. I am also concerned about battery life. I understand how to turn off all the unneccessary crap like Wi-Fi, GPS, Messenger, etc when not in use, but will rooting the phone or upgrading to 2.1 or 2.2 help with that issue as well.

I have to admit, this most likely has been answered before, but I have been extremely busy lately due to school.
The question: I have refrained from rooting my Hero (I am a linux user in case any one wanted to know ) due to time constraints, I have yet to root it. I will probably attempt this weekend.
I bought the hero Oct. 11th, the day it came out iirc, and I have built up quite a hefty sum of applications.
After the rooting process, I plan use the gumbo kernel, and fresh1.1. One of the reasons that have held me from rooting is what happens to those apps? I will flash Fresh1.1, so they will be deleted. Is there a way to extract all the applications from the nandroid backup I will make before flashing Fresh 1.1, and put them on the SD card and install them? I would love very much not to have to go and individually download each application from the market again.
I am new to this and have just rooted my phone (Htc Hero). Is there a difference b/w rooting your phone and unlocking it? If so what and how do I do it? I am on sprint and am not even sure if unlocking it will do anything since it is CDMA.

I know most of the devices that are going to run 2.2 have a 1GHZ processor and a lot more internal memory than my Hero does. I am only thinking about doing this because 2.1 on Hero is so glitchy, but I love the 2.1 apps. Any help?

Can I root with my current card (which has 650MB-ish available), and after rooting just purchase a new card and swap it out.
