Sep 8, 2010I just rooted my phone and i'd like to play with different ROMs and kernels. I'm currently using Fresh 3.2 and the netarch-toast kernel. Just a few questions though:
1. Can i make multiple nandroid backups?
2. Is using the recovery method with AMON the best way to make nandroid backups?
3. is restoring a nandroid backup like going back in time to the exact same state i had my phone prior to making the backup?

Jul 10, 2010I have a question about restoring nandroid backups. I have quite a few ROMs saved as backups, for switching if I want to try something else. I have White Widow 4.4 installed right now, and am apparently stuck with it since when trying to roll back to Aloysius or anything else. When I go to restore a back up, after wiping dalvik/data, I get this error. Error : run 'nandroid-mobile.shrestore' via adb! What the heck are they talking about? I hope this isn't something simple and stupid, but I am out to sea right now with no access to my computer. Please assist! Thanks guys! Also, WW4.4 rules.

Nov 13, 20124.2 of Jelly Bean update could be imminent for my Nexus 7, and I'm wondering about what and how to backup before the update. The question I think is a general android one though... which is why I'm posting it here.
This was going to be a question about factory reset... but reading other posts I think I now understand that factory reset just deletes data/cache, so I think any time you do that it's just gonna return the device to a clean ROM state without changing the ROM. (whatever flavour/version ROM is)
When a ROM update is applied (either official or manually flashed), I guess it wipes everything, is it like a disk format or something like that? I have installed CWM recovery and rooted my device, I think the update will unroot it, but will the CWM recovery still be loaded?
And then, what backup should I take before the update... I think a Titanium Backup is a must, I understand how that works. But a Nandroid backup too? Or is that more like taking a disk image, would that be useless to restore after the ROM has been updated? And if so, does that mean any old Nandroid backups should be discarded?
Once the new update to 4.2 is installed, is it advisable to take a Nandroid backup immediately, or better to download the stock 4.2 image and keeping it as a starting point? (does this amount to the same thing?) I guess this is where a factory reset would return it to stock (providing I haven't moved anything to the system apps)?
Or is it possible/better to use a Nandroid backup as a point in time image of everything that's been installed on the device after adding back all the apps etc? I guess that leads me to wonder if the Nandroid backup is needed at all if I'm going with the Titanium Backups...

Jun 29, 2013I flashed + rooted (strangely in that order, which means I must have rooted my phone ages ago.. and then locked my bootloader after flashing..?)...
I do have Rom manager installed... but I don't quite recall how I ended up flashing the stock rom onto the phone..
Anyways, as I did seem to reset my phone, I upgraded all the apk packs and I'm pretty happy with the speed upgrade + ext2 internal space expansion.
As I now want to create a nandroid backup, so I can always come back to my current status, when I want a clean reinstall..!
My main question is that as I seem to have skipped creating a CWM recovery... if I do so now, will I loose all my data and go back to the basic stock rom?
The problem I'm facing right now is that I'm unable to boot into the recovery mode using either "adb reboot recovery" or the power on + vol buttons / menu button. (which means that I don't have the recovery mode installed.....)
So.... will I loose my current upgrades + phone settings (reset into factory mode), if I flash the recovery mode?

May 13, 2010Good Morning all --- another question surfaced as I am considering partitioning of my SD card for use with Fresh 2.0d and using the benfits of Apps2SD.
Once up and running, does the Nandroid backup work on this configuration? Or must you keep your files in the Hero to get a functional backup? Now using the 1.6.2 version of RA.
I would certainly not want to sacrifice my ability to make periodic Nandriod backups of my phone.

I forgot to wipe before restoring a nandroid (DC2.08.1) last night, and subsequently have made some changes. Everything seems to be working OK. I will make a new Nandroid backup.
Is there any benefit to then wiping and restoring that new nandroid backup? Or will the backup just re-install what I have just wiped? Sorry, I don't understand what exactly is being wiped.

Jun 3, 2010When I click on the nandroid backup my the process starts, then i think the phone goes to reboot during the process (I assume this is part of the process?) then I get a error icon on my phone a Triangle with a exclamation point in the middle, then I'm stuck, the phone wont reconnect to Fresh Kitchen. should I use recovery to fore reboot? help? Mar 31, 2010About two days ago the DamageControl2.0r ROM started giving me the WiFi issues, and where I am with no EVDO or even E network. I rely on the WiFi at work and home, and wherever else I may need it. So I attempted to flash back to Fresh2.0c using the wipe/reboot and all the normal steps. Well it kept booting back to the Damage Control ROM. Someone suggested I use Nanroid backup then tried reflashing the rom. Which ended up working. Well I then decided I wanted to try the New Kitchen, because I love tinkering with this stuff, and it wouldn't flash again. I had to use Nandroid backup to go back to Fresh2.0c and have it working properly. Is there something I could be missing completely?

Sep 12, 2010I'm rooting my cdma htc hero with google from sprint and one thing people say to do is nandroid. i read that you do this after rooting and before updating roms, but i have to ruu before i can root because my build number is 2.27.651.6 and has to be .5 so this will clear it off... anyway to backup device before i do this? anything other than nandroid? or a way to do it before rooting?

Nov 10, 2009I have already rooted my hero but I did not flash a recovery image or perform a nandroid back up mostly because I could not find clear instructions on how to do so, which caused me to have to completely wipe my phone and start over after I deleted some programs that caused my loop over and over. I know the commands I need to run in adb to flash the recovery image but I do not know where to download the recovery image or where I need to store it I also can't find anything on nandroid back could somone please explain these in detail with the steps I need to take so I don't need to start from square one again.

I click on the nandroid backup and it reboots my phone and brings up a HTC splash screen.
basically I have to pull out the battery to get phone functionality back. I have read else where that I can hold volume down and power to bring up a recovery mod (this works) but I am not sure what to do when I get there.
Sprint HTC Hero :: Any Way To Change Recovery Back To Stock Without Root? (Nandroid)
Jun 30, 2010Let me start off by saying I did/still do have a nandroid and also a custom ROM zip on my SD. I used the ROM manager application to wipe data/cache, like I have done about 10 times this past week, and flashed a new ROM. So my phone reboots to recovery, "clockwork mod recovery", you have to use this recovery to use ROM manager, and instead of flashing the ROM, it gives me some error message. Now for anyone who isn't familiar with clockwork recovery, you can't flash a nandroid from it, you have to revert back to the stock recovery to flash a nandroid, or at least I do.
So now all I can do is reboot my hero which brings me back to stock 2.1 with no root access. Now I know what your thinking, "just flash your nandroid", but now I can't. To flash my nandroid I would have to reflash the stock recovery image through ROM manager, and now I'm stuck with the clockwork recovery image because ROM manager requires root to swap recoveries, and no ability to nandroid back to where I was before. Basically, unless there is a way to change my recovery back to stock without being rooted currently.
