Samsung Vibrant :: What's Up With Battery Getting Hammered After Reboot / Power Cycle?
Aug 21, 2010
So I was out on my motorcycle and had about 60% battery left on my Vibrant.Figuring I wasn't going to need the phone for a few hours I powered the phone off, calling myself saving battery. When I turned the phone back on I was totally surprised that the battery was down to 38% immediately following powering up.This happens every time I power the phone down-I lose about 20% consistently. It also happens when google maps shits itself and either freezes the phone (necessitating a battery pull reset) or causes a spontaneous reboot. Is this normal? I've had my phone for a bit over two weeks (so out of my remorse period) and my besides this my battery works and lasts rather well, considering how much this phone has going on.

So I have 2 reports now of my app causing a crash/reboot cycle the user can't always break from. I cannot reproduce this on my phone, and I am wondering what might be causing something like this? Would running out of memory or something cause this? Because I can't reproduce it, I can't look at the logs or anything.
Has anyone experiences anything similar? For reference, my app runs a foreground service which utilizes the AlarmManager. It starts automatically on boot_completed (which is probably why the cycle happens). One of the users who reported this, said it only happened when they plugged their phone into a PC.

Device: Motorola DROID
I just wanted to post an issue I found. I downloaded ES File Explorer and was browsing a shared folder of pictures on a desktop. I selected a picture and, with the file explorer's picture viewer, browsed the next few pictures sequentially. I found one that I wanted to use as a background, so with a menu option, I chose set as background. The device froze, and started a never ending reboot cycle. I had to hard reset the device and wipe it with the POWER + X button option. I am not sure if this is an ES File Explorer problem or a problem with file transfers initiated some way other than copy and paste, or just simply trying to assign a remote path as a background image location, but I thought it necessary to post. I have sent this to the author of the file manager as well.

I found that the old bug reported in http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1578 where only a power cycle brings back the camera still persists with the official Cupcake firmware on my ADP. When it happens - and I've encountered it several times in a few days now - no camera application can access the camera. A power cycle is needed to recover from this locked camera state.

I've noticed that when I do a soft reset (power cycle phone off and on) that the start up screen has what looks like dead pixels. When the phone actually boots up to the HTC screen with Android waving the "dead" pixels disappear. They only appear on start-up and go away at the HTC screen with Android. I noticed about 5 "dead" spots. Is this normal?

Ive had my Vibrant for about a week and a half and my power button seems like like it wore out like if i had it for about a year or something. When I first got the phone it was all good up until a couple days ago when I noticed it. So should I call Tmo customer service to get a replacement or wait it out till it get worse.

I had it plugged in to a wall charger, so I don't know if it was still getting enough power to keep the screen lit.

On my Vibrant I have both the standard "green battery" icon in my taskbar, as well as a downloaded battery percentage icon. I've noticed that the standard icon does a really poor job tracking the actual battery percentage. For example, the percentage will show 35%, but the icon will still appear two-thirds green.

I have a black background, I keep the display settings at the lowest brightness settings, and I keep the screen off when I'm not using it, but my phone is dying after 8-10 hours if I don't use it very much and 4-5 hours if I use it regularly. Every time it indicates that it needs to be recharged, 65-80% of the power is going to the display. I...don't see how that can be.I'm using a Samsung Vibrant that I bought on July 30th.

I got the Behold 2 in the mail about four days ago, and it was working out pretty well for me. This was mostly because I'd previously been using an archaic piece of crap and hadn't had any experience with Android, so I was pretty blown away by the customization and yada yada yada. Touchwiz didn't even bother me because I've never seen Android without that UI. Then the battery issues started, which a few other people have obviously had judging by the threads on this forum. I was losing roughly 1% of battery power every 5 minutes without me even touching it, which is absolutely ridiculous. I followed the basic procedure and turned everything off, etc., and am recharging it now. So, waiting to see if it gets any better. But it seems like a hassle to have to constantly keep wifi disabled or to take all the widgets off the home screen......

Just called O2 about my Galaxy, It keeps shutting down and I cannot power up without first removing and replacing the battery, I's just over 1 month old and they deny any knowledge of this happening at all, They want me to send it for repair and have the priviledge of waiting up to 14 days to get it returned whilst I merrily pay a contract fee to them!

The last day or so after charging my phone to 100% overnight (phone is on when charging) and then putting in standby mode I'm losing like 5-7% of battery every hour.Over the weekend I was losing just 6% every 9 hours in standby mode. Today in 4 hours time I'm down to 65% already with mostly standby mode and a few minutes of browsing. I even had JuiceDefender installed since last night and it's not helping at all.To me it seems that something is in the background that is draining the battery though I when I check running services I don't see anything that shouldn't be there. When I was losing only 6% every 10 hours I did have a live wallpaper, weather/clock widget, and task killer. I didn't change anything on the next charge and now I'm constantly losing battery even in standby mode.
I have Wifi/GPS/background data off, brightness at minimum, no animations, etc. So pretty much followed all the battery saving pointers. I thought it was working good when I got just about 36 hours over the weekend with standby and moderate usage. So I don't know what has happened to my battery all of a sudden. The two times that I have managed to do 30+ hours on a single charge I had Advanced Task Killer running. However, even after doing 36 hours on one charge the next day even with ATK the battery started to drain a lot every hour in just standby. Anyone else having similar issues? I don't know what else to do at this time. I've uninstalled many of the apps thinking it might one of them causing the issue, but still having issues.

Using Cron4Phone:
I want to shutdown the phone every night at a certain time via cron. Normally in Linux, you can use shutdown -h or Poweroff. Neither command works.
Their command in the program uses reboot -p which I understand to not be a good way to shutdown the phone as it is essentially the same as a battery pull.
I have busybox installed and have tried with full root permissions using busybox poweroff -f and nothing happens. Is there a simple command that I can push in there to safely shut down the phone?

Well after trying evereything under the sun to get better battery life out of this vibrant, including atk, turning 3G off, installing battery apps, rooting, setcpu, lag fixes, now custom roms today. I finally know why the battery blows. I simply can't stop messing with this thing that is why! It's always in my hand like a nice comfort toy. Reminds of when the iPhone came out and I was hacking that thing to pieces updating unlocking jail breaking selling buying.

This is a great thread to read on tips for saving power http://androidforums.com/samsung-vibrant/138944-how-save-power.html But this is something that people over look, its mentioned in a few places but I think it needs to be promoted more. I'm talking about, well I guess the word for it is conditioning the battery. Basically you drain the battery down till its dead(though in my case I went down to only 5%), turn the phone off and charge back up to full. One thing I noticed right away was how long it took for the phone to recharge. I have not hard data, but my experience up to that point was charging before didn't take that long. But now that I've done this, battery life is great. I've been listening to music for a couple of hours, some light browsing, viewed a youtube video, took a few pictures, and I have background sync on and I have both twitter and facebook installed with notifications set to their shortest time span(15min and 30min respectively). Currently at 8hrs since unplugged and at 61%. Not bad I'd say. I also have rooted my phone and installed the lag fix. I'm not running BH_MAN's cut down rom, I am still running stock.

Wow, I'm not sure what it is but my battery life has been horrible for the past week or so. Very minimal usage has me at 20% in 5 hours. This is unacceptable. The most I do is browse the web or play the occasional game for a few minutes. Recently I installed launcher pro, is this program known to worsen battery life? I don't even have that many programs on this phone. I see peoples screen shots with 7 pages full of widgets, I have 3 pages and only two are "full" of widgets.
I'm rooted, on stock rom, bloatware removed, and overclocked @ 1.2Ghz. I'm aware that overclocking is harder on the cpu and can worsen battery life, but my phone isn't always running at full speed. I have all my profiles set on conservative. When the screen is off I have it set to clock at 600Mhz max, 100 minimum. Does anyone know what might be causing the problem?
I heard that some custom roms improve battery life. What else can I do to improve battery life? If launchers can cause bad battery I'll just use touchwiz, doesn't bother me. I'd rather have good battery life over good looking screens. Also, my screen is on the lowest brightness setting for most of the day. Today for example, I had my phone fully charged. Took it off the charger and texted my girlfriend for a bit. Browsed maybe 2 sites on the web. I took a 2 hour nap. Woke up and played Nova for 20 minutes. I check my charge and my.phone was at 30%! Unacceptable. It was off the charger for less than 5 hours!

When I have about 50% battery left, the indicator in the notification bar makes it seem like I have 70-80% left. Does this happen to anyone else? Just wandering if anyone else noticed this or maybe it's just me. I've had it happen to my rooted G1 before and it was a software issue.

With the Samsung Vibrant there is the USB cable and the charger that you plug the USB cable into (to charge it from the wall). I was wondering if charging the battery from a PC was any different the plugging the USB cable into the wall charger? I would like to just keep the USB cable plugged into my PC and charge it that way but I want to know if it will get the same charge as it would with the wall outlet.
