Samsung Vibrant :: Flash Back To Stock Recovery?
Sep 8, 2010
I'm looking at sending my phone back in to TMO, but I don't want there to be a trace of anything. I rooted via the update.zip and flashed Clockwork, but haven't flashed any other roms or anything.
I was curious, is there a way to flash back to the stock recovery? Or would uninstalling Rom Manager, then unrooting via terminal, have the same effect?

a few days ago I was flashing my phone and had a power outage when I was almost done. Now I get can't it to show up on RSL or ADB. It's lagging like crazy. I did resets, I've been searching for 3 days for a way how to just put this phone (behold 2) back to stock, and I can't find a damn thing. I always hate to ask for help but I really need it. This thing freezes and randomly reboots by itself all day long. It's pretty useless. Does anyone have or know of a file I can download and flash or use in some other way to take my phone back to stock condition?

First off let me say that I was wrong about this issue. Its not an issue with Easy root it is just something built into android. So I apologize to anyone I argued this subject with but specifically Patch. Its also not an issue with rom manager. This applys to users that after flashing a custom recovery they can boot into it once but the next time you try to boot into recovery it has reverted to stock.
This mostly happens to users of easy root or users that use my guide for rooting using Linux
So for the fix.
Download this file and place it in the root of your sd card.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7223192/install-recovery.sh
Download Terminal Emulator from the market. The one by the dev Jack Palevich.
Open it and type the following commands.
su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
dd if=/sdcard/install-recovery.sh of=/system/etc/install-recovery.sh
chmod 550 /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
sync
after that just flash the custom recovery of your choice and you should be good to go.
I tested this on my phone and another user tested it for me and it worked for both of us. If anyone has an issue let me know. This issue is so sporadic that its hard to have people test the fix.

First off you must have a 100% stock rom and be rooted.

So now that we have the wireless hotspot option I'm done with root. Especially considering I haven't been able to get weather updates for the past two weeks and my phone restarts when trying to install new apps.
I'm ready to just set everything back to stock and go back to getting OTAs. I know I can't relock the phone.
My problem is, I have the stock recovery image however whenever I flash it and try to go into recovery it shows me this screen with a little android guy and a big triangle with an exclamation point inside. And then it sits there until I do a battery pull.
I've tried this with the stock recovery from a couple different sources MD5 checks are all good.

I spent the night working on an update.zip for everyone, I know the likely of it being used is far and between, but wanted to give people Option's for flashing as well being able to flash on the go like I do
Before we start, I installed the Factory Rom here > True Stock 2.1 firmware for vibrant - xda-developers
This likely don't matter, I just flashed based on Reports it had better signal.
To boot Downloader Mode, Power off Phone!
Hold Volume up + Down & Hit the Power button ( Do not Hold the Power button, only Both Volume Key's )
Secondly, I had Flashed this Root method here > Root your Vibrant - xda-developers
To Root my Phone before I started
You can also boot into Recovery by Holding Volume Up + Power
From this Point, I installed Koush Rom Manager app & selected Vibrant when asked ( P.S. Huge fan of Koush's work ).
After I had downloaded the Recovery via Rom Manager, I booted into recovery and ran the update.zip which booted me into ClockworkMod Recovery mod.
Once inside ClockworkMod the Power button on my Phone no longer Select the Option you are wishing to use, I did however Noticed that the back key ( Next to the Search ) did however work for making selection via Menu.
For now, this update will not flash the zImage, I'll be adding that in the Next update, or trying to once I get more familiar with the Phone.

Let me start off by saying I did/still do have a nandroid and also a custom ROM zip on my SD. I used the ROM manager application to wipe data/cache, like I have done about 10 times this past week, and flashed a new ROM. So my phone reboots to recovery, "clockwork mod recovery", you have to use this recovery to use ROM manager, and instead of flashing the ROM, it gives me some error message. Now for anyone who isn't familiar with clockwork recovery, you can't flash a nandroid from it, you have to revert back to the stock recovery to flash a nandroid, or at least I do.
So now all I can do is reboot my hero which brings me back to stock 2.1 with no root access. Now I know what your thinking, "just flash your nandroid", but now I can't. To flash my nandroid I would have to reflash the stock recovery image through ROM manager, and now I'm stuck with the clockwork recovery image because ROM manager requires root to swap recoveries, and no ability to nandroid back to where I was before. Basically, unless there is a way to change my recovery back to stock without being rooted currently.

I was having some pretty serious problems with Bionix 1.7 (couldn't download from market, unusably bad GPS, etc), which I thought I had successfully flashed yesterday afternoon. I decided to use Clockwork Mod to restore a backup I made before I flashed Bionix. This hung up for quite a while (upwards of 20 minutes) so I figured something had gone wrong. I held the power button until the screen turned off, and that put me right into Android Recovery, where I get the options to reboot (puts me right back there), reinstall packages (puts me into Clockwork Mod, which I'll get to in a second) or delete user data / cache, which I haven't messed with.
If I go into Clockwork Mod, I can tell it to try to restore one of my previous backups again, but it hangs up indefinitely (upwards of several hours) at "Restoring data..." (with either immvbsd.lck or .pc_syncstream below that). I can also still see the Bionix .zip on my SD card, but when I tell Clockwork Mod to install that .zip it gets this far:
Formatting DATA:...
Copying files...
E:Failure at line 81:
copy_dir PACKAGE:data DATA:
Installation aborted.

One of the main reasons I went with a android phone instead of an iPhone is the flash support. But it seems my vibrant doesn't really have full flash support. I could not watch a "flip" video from my email. I got a flash media player error message. Is there anything I can do about this or just have to wait for android 2.2? Will froyo provide full flash support?

I followed the instructions on the how-to root sticky, but when I power down the device and then hold vol down+up simultaneously and power it back up to get to recovery mode (to root), it boots normally. I've done this 7 times now, with two fingers holding down the volume buttons (one each) and then pressing the power button until the device shows signs of life.

I have a Vibrant. The issue all started when I tried to install the 1.2ghz OC rom onto my phone. I had rommanager installed, and attempted to run it off the SD card, but when my phone booted up it had lost my applications, everything.
The problem I'm running into now is that the phone seems to be unable to use its mass storage. Every time I attempt to reinstall an application from the market it says it doesn't have enough memory. Under settings it says "unavailable" for the internal mass storage.
I tried using the volume buttons and power button to enter recovery/dl mode but every time I do I cannot make selections. If I use the power button to try to select it does nothing. In fact the "up" volume button makes it go down, and the other "down" button also doesn't do anything.
Since I have no applications I can't use clockwork recovery, even though I know I have one. Also, Odin is unable to connect to the phone, so I can't reload factory. Kies also doesn't recognize the phone.
It also won't even recognize the SIM card, says it has no reception when it clearly does.

Initially all worked OK. But then after some installs from the Market i am not able to access any internal flash storages. Phone was not rooted.
Here are some facts:
- i see the drive letters assigned for both of them on PC but when you click Explore the message is "Please insert a disk into drive M: (or N or whatever)".
- They are shown as mounted on the phone . Dismount and mount again changes nothing
- the phone is recording photos/videos OK on internal memory means flash is working fine.
- SD card is perfectly working too. if you extract it and put into computer you can read/write it. On the cell you can play music from it etc no problems
- I restored everything with Factory Data Reset but things did not change
- Same story from another PC
- Samsung Kies shows the files in PC Windows Media Player which are on Vibrant's SD card but can not read/download them
Is this some driver problem ? Or flash memory is locked by Vibrant OS?
I suspect EasyTether or PDANet third party driver for Samsung phones is responsible.
Tethering works though
