Samsung Captivate :: Unlocked Captivate / Access To T - Mobile Sim?
Sep 2, 2010
If any of you own an uncloaked captivate, and also have a T-mobile phone, and you don't mind testing let me know. I want to confirm my fix, that popping in an active T-mobile sim card with data plan, will allow an unlocked Captivate to get a 3G signal. No software or root required, it is actually very easy. If you are willing to volunteer, let me know.

I got AT&T Samsung Captivate i897 (2.1 Eclair). I unlocked and rooted my phone. I was using simple free phone earlier which doesn't require data plan but after two weeks I bought samsung captivate, AT&T added $25 data plan. I got my phone from AT&T store where my friend works so he took my data plan out of the plan for now but he said they will find out and add into your plan again. Also, He said that they recognize by your IMEI number. My question is: Is there anyway I can change my IMEI number? I was thinking to use my simple free Nokia phone's IMEI number and use it for Samsung Captivate so AT&T thinks that I am using Nokia phone.

After running three updates this morning. I started getting a weird light effect when I unlock my phone. It happens at the top of the screen just to the right below the battery. It's a quick yellow glow then it disappears until my phone is locked then unlocked again. One of the updates had to do with my weather widget [Weather & toggle]. Anyone seen or heard of this?

I have an unlocked captivate. I have a German T-D1 pay-as-you-go sim that I've used many times in unlocked GPS phones. Now I have an AT&T captivate and wonder whether GPS or other apps will work. Does GPS require a data plan to work? If so I'll have to figure out whetted I can add this to my T-D1 plan. This will also answer my question about whether using the Captivate for navigation in the US needs a data plan to work.

I know that some people were able to do this with the Nexus One. So has anyone (who has gotten it early) done the same?

I unlocked my Captivate a few days after the unlock came out and have been using it flawlessly for the last month or so. Well, my extra batteries came in last night so I kept taking the batteries in and out, powering the phone on and off. Then I used the new battery 'til it died and when I turned it back on, the SIM lock was on again. So I had to go through the process this morning again to unlock it. Tip: don't power on and off your unlocked Captivates too much/frequently. It'll lock up again!

Ive heard some people say that it is not possible for an unlocked AT&T captivate to work on t-mobile because of the differences in UMTS bands.Vibrant:
GSM
850/900/1800/1900
UMTS
2100/1700
Captivate:
GSM
850/900/1800/1900
UMTS
2100/1900/850
My question to the experts though, is if I want to use nothing but voice and SMS / MMS on a prepaid sim with T-Mobile. Can I do this with the captivate? Seriously, the 3g means nothing to me and I have no desire to pay for it, would just like to use voice and SMS / MMS. Will this phone be able to do that at all?

We are an ATT shop and have a user that wants us to get the t-mobile version and unlock for over seas travel. To my understanding both devices have the same 3G bands? it's only in the USA where the ATT and T-Mobile 3G bands are different?

Anyone else try this? It's actually pretty good. I'm not sure it's worth $10 a month. I hadn't seen it mentioned on here yet.

I've had a problem since yesterday that every time I'm on 3G the browser returns an Access Forbidden error. All the other apps work just fine, it's just the browser, and only when I'm not on wifi. I have tried rebooting the phone, clearing the browser data, turning flight mode on and off.

Most of the applications on my phone are stored on the internal storage. I cannot figure out how to access the internal storage to manage these applications. I may need to reset my phone, but I don't want to lose my paid applications.

I dearly dearly miss the the separate call button in my prior phone, that I could access no matter what app or screen I was in. With android, it is huge step backward, where you have to first click the home screen to get to the call button. Please tell me I am overlooking something very simple because I cannot imagine Android missing out such a big part. Or please tell me if there is a better home screen replacement that does exactly what I mentioned above. Will really appreciate any responses.

I have an AT&T Captivate and it has been working fine until yesterday. All of a sudden I can't connect to the internet and no 3G icon. I have restarted the phone, pulled the battery, put my sim card in my brothers captivate and it works fine on his. After the phone restarts the 3G icon will appear for maybe 1 minute and I connect for that short time then it disappears and no more 3G. If I switch to wifi I can connect just fine.

Has anyone figured out a way to have the Captivate default browser not load mobile pages? I didn't fork out all this extra money to load websites in the same format as my old flip phone.

Most of the questions on SO has been too generic, comparing iPhone, Android and Blackberry all at once. I want to ask your experience between developing on Android and Blackberry. From your experience as Java programmer: Android or Blackberry? Any other noteworthy checklists to share to Java programmers that want to choose whether to develop on Android or Blackberry?

I just got my Captivate this past weekend and love it so far. I came over from the HTC Aria so I am a little Android savvy. Question is this. I put a 2GB SD card in my Captivate and want to set one of the songs on it as a ringtone. I would also like for the external SD to be the default location for pictures when I take them. Thirdly, I want to access the external SD card when I connect my phone to the PC via the USB cable, but for the life of me, these 3 issues I cant seem to resolve and they were cake on the HTC.

So I got my Captivate this weekend, and have been using it on my WiFi at the apartment and everything is working fine. But today I went to work, and now any webpage I try to access just shows up as a blank white page with the words "Access Forbidden". Other apps work just fine, I just can't visit any webpages. I'm definitely connected to 3G, with a strong signal strength. I read in one thread that clearing APN proxy settings solved this problem for them, but I can't find any way to edit the APN settings on my phone (can only view them). I read another thread that this happens to people who switch over from an IPhone; only problem is, I've never owned an IPhone. I'm contemplating giving AT&T customer support a call, but wanted to check here first to see if anyone else is having this problem/has a fix. Here are my APN settings in case this clears anything up:
Name: ATT WAP
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
Username: Not Set
Password: Not Set
Server: Not Set
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication Type: None
APN type: internet + mms
These are the default phone settings and it won't let me change any of them, although it will let me create a new APN and edit the settings of that. It seems odd that the default APN is Cingular...that is the service I had years ago, but it merged with AT&T a while back.

When I am about to install an app (game) it says:
"This application has access to the following:"
Your Location
coarse (network-based) location, fine (GPS) location
Network Communication
full Internet access
Phone calls
read phone state
What does all this mean? For the internet part, I have limited data per month, will it really add up...I have 200 MB/month.

I foolishly installed google voice on my Captivate before listening to all my AT&T voice mails. After I did this I realized that I had a bunch of voice mails on AT&T voice mail, and now I can't figure out how to get to the AT&T voice mails.Any suggestions? Do I need to de-activate google voice on my voice mail then get the AT&T messages, then re-activate the google voice on my voice mail?

I tried everything and I'm beside myself. I dropped my phone off the second level of a local mall....it is (was) a Samsung Captivate. I was leaning over the rail to yell down to someone and the phone fell out of my pocket.
The screen is black....the buttons on the bottom light up and function. but I can't see a thing.
I need to get a video off the phone of my son, it was one of those moments that I was so glad I caught on video. I have to get it!! I"m sending the phone to DR.PHONEZ to get repaired but I scared that this video will be lost. So
I tried BitPim but the phone isn't supported. IT is recognized by my pc but I can't access the files I need.
two REMOVABLE drives show up in "MY COMPUTER" but when I click them it says "please insert disk"
Not sure what to do here, I checked all over the web.

I'm a big fan of just having direct access to my devices (i.e., no sync, no "management" front end). So this isn't about local access from the device (using MyFiles or Astro), but from a PC in the same location (so not like 3G remote). So far I've explored these options: USB Connect phone, mount from notification menu, and there you go. Bluetooth Pair phone, use "send file" from PC BT app (running in system tray).
Files drop into a 'bluetooth' directory, ready to move/use. Android Web OS Very beta-esque right now, but runs as a service on the phone, then you can access the filesystem (and SMS, eventually other functions). You can copy up to the phone or download (basically via a simple web mechanism). Use across Another service on the phone, a basic FTP server accessible across WiFi.
Works pretty good so far, I created a 'network location' in Windows, then a shortcut on my desktop into my MP3 directory on /sd. So I just open that folder, copy over MP3s. Doesn't matter where the phone is currently sitting or connected. For the services type options, I'm going to check out something like Locale or Tasker, when I can trigger the service to fire up based on a rule (a specific WiFi network trigger would be outstanding).

I have a captivate. When I compose a text message the persons number initially shows up as the ten digits. Now when I close out of the text message and try to go back and serbs something the persons number shows up as only 7 digits. When I try to send a text with only the 7 numbers I get a return error message saying
8852662 Error Invalid Number. Please re-send using a valid 10 digit mobile number.

So I painfully watched my Cappy's battery door crushed under my friend's car as one of their "harmless" joke. Now there's not a single site on the internet selling these doors, and I'm desperate. I found dummy/display Captivates though, so I was just wondering if anyone knows if the dummy battery door can replace the REAL door by any chance?

I rooted my Captivate tonight and I know how the superuser icon with android skull and crossbones. However neither Super Manager or ASTRO will allow me to uninstall the crap ware on my phone. Is there something I'm missing? I followed all the steps at XDA. So far I've tried to remove YPMobile, ATT Navigator, and ATT Maps. Any suggestions? I tried searching this on google and this forum but didn't come up with anything.
