Samsung Captivate : How Can I Flash Custom Rom?
Nov 25, 2010
Sorry guys for hte noob question but I am new to custom roms and I am trying to avoid bricking my phone. I rooted the phone with OCLF and I want to give the cognition rom a try (I have create a backup of my current ROM with ROM Manager). However if I understand it right I need to flash my phone back to JF6? Can I install the ROM using CLockwork Recovery or do I have to use hte ODIN method? What is the difference? I understand that I can recover to stock using odin but I believe I should be able to recover to my stock rom using ROM Manager from the back?

My Captivate was given to my as a company phone, but I have been told that they don't care what I do with it outside of 1 app, Good for Enterprise. (For those who don't know, this is an app that allows secure access to my company email and calendar. It requires the server admen to send me an invite with a PIN to register my device on the system before I can completely load it. I have already rooted the phone, but I would like to flash my ROM to get Froyo and maybe some additional features. Is there a way to flash my ROM without losing my apps? I know Google will re download everything to my phone, but I think this would force me to completely re-setup my Good for Enterprise which I don't want to do.

I just saw my first review on the Epic for Sprint and saw that it has an LED flash and an LED indicator for missing calls, etc. Why would Samsung give Sprint users a better phone than us? I sure would have liked the LED's on my captivate. Man that makes me upset. Why wouldn't they have all the same features on every phone in the Galaxy series.

First, is there a good reason the captivate does not have a camera flash (aside from the devs thinking the night mode worked 'well enough')?
If not: I strongly suggest we get a huge number of people to say they would be interested in buying a flashlight/camera flash add-on for the phone were someone to develop one. After we get a big enough number, we'll kindly forward it to several companies. I took my phone out last night for halloween, and was quite disappointed with the night quality. I'm sure something like this would be profitable at ~$6, but I would pay $10-15 to cover research costs/etc.

I used this method but altered a bit to install flash 10.1 for eclair and it is indeed working, here and there.
How To: Install Flash 10.1 On Android 2.1 Eclair Devices? It was a well understood myth that only Android 2.2 Froyo was capable enough to handle Flash 10.1. But now as the story unfolds, you can install Flash 10.1 onto your Android 2.1 Eclair powered handsets without any issues. The absence of a JIT compiler and other Froyo goodies might cause some performance issues, but in the end you will be able to surf Flash enabled websites without any problems.
Here is the step by step guide on how to get Flash 10.1 on your Android 2.1 Eclair geared phone:
The first step is to download flash_for_21.zip to your computer and extract the .apk file.
Now navigate to the market and install "Apps Installer" utility to your phone.
Now connect your Android phone to the computer and copy .apk file to your SD card. Make sure that it is in SD card root and not in a sub folder.
After this launch "Apps Installer" on your phone and follow the on screen instructions to install flash_for_21.apk file.
After installation is complete, simply reboot your phone and there you go! You now have Flash 10.1 on your phone.
This method has been tested and confirmed operational for Google Nexus One, Droid Eris and HTC EVO 4G on stock Android 2.1 Eclair.
The apk download
http://www.addictivetips.com/wp-content/uploads/android/apps/flash_for_21.zip
The only difference is I used just the standard debug transfer to load it into my phone then used android centrals sideload wonder app to install it in debug mode.
The Android Central Sideload Wonder Machine - Android Forums
Had to have enable plug ins turned on in the browsers settings, doesn't seem to work on all sites but some sites that did not work missing flash before are for sure working now.
Rooted Galaxy S captivate running eclair 2.1. Using skyfire or opera. dolphin seems ok also. Seems to get better results than standard browser. Some pages seems like it works others it doesn't. I used whatismyflash.com and it reports I am using 9. I don't get it.

We can now do partial flashes with the CL14 SBL.... If you have not had the CL14 official update yet, you can follow these steps to get it:
Remember... THIS WILL PUT THE CL14 BOOTLOADER ON YOUR PHONE!
What you need:
Sprints Update Utility
1. Create a datatool back-up.
2. Download and install Sprints Update Utility found above.
3. Run the program (now called SWUpdater) and follow all the directions until it says "Flash Downloading Complete".
Once you have the official CL14 update on your phone, or if you already had it, and you would like to flash SDX/Joey's Kernel (and Max's Recovery), follow the steps below.
What you need:
CL14 official update
An SDX/Joey's Kernel
Max's Recovery
1. Create a datatool back-up... (Although you most likely wont need it if you are just flashing a kernel.... But JUST in case, you should create a datatool back-up if you aren't confident that you wont wipe your data!)
2. After downloading and installing Sprints Update Utility, go into the binary folder (C:Program FilesSamsung ElectronicsSWUpgradeModelsBinary) and move the CL14 file to a safe place, MAKE SURE IT IS NO LONGER IN THE BINARY FOLDER.
3. Find the Kernel you want to flash and put it in the binary folder.
Note: Now you should only have one file in the binary folder (the custom kernel). Also make sure that if the file you are putting into the binary folder says 7zip or winrar, extract it!! If you dont you will get the message "Cannot access bin folder!", and you will not be able to start the download.
4. On your desktop there should be a program named SWUpgrade. Run the program and follow all of the steps through the end. After every thing finishes successfully, you will end up with STOCK CL14, this includes the CL14 SBL, along with the custom kernel you put in the binary folder (you are root).
5. Double check that everything worked by going into Settings-About Phone, under BaseBand version you should see S:M900.8.0S.CL14, under Kernel version= 2.6.27 moment(at)momentdev, under Build number= Joey's name (or any other developer who's kernel you put in the binary folder).
6. Repeat steps 1-4, putting Max's recovery in the binary folder instead of the kernel.
7. You're all set.
(If you happen to want to flash one of Zefie's kernels, repeat steps 1-4 also.)
It wasn't a great thing to get the CL14 update before, because it was hard to obtain root. But now with Sprints Update Utility, and all the new kernels, we are able to get root with the CL14 SBL easily.

I have a noob question about ROMs. I have rooted my phone and "Pimped my captivate".
If I now flash a new ROM what would that do to the following:
1. Apps - Would my apps be replaced by apps from the ROM, which means I will loose and gain some apps.
2. Contacts - Would I have to resync my phone to get my contacts.
3. Rooting: Would I have to reroot and again "Pimp my captivate".

How do you play Flash games on this phone? For example, Game Bubble Struggle 2: Rebubbled - Games | Rebubbled loads up and I see the startup screen and all, but I can't click/see any way that I can use arrow keys to operate the game. Is it just not possible, or is there another way/will it be possible?

Using the Captivate coming from a BB Bold. One thing I loved about my bold was how I was able to customize notifications; email was only indicated by the LED light, SMS vibrated, phone vibrated then rang, and additionally, I had unique notification settings for certain contacts (ie, my wife). Is there a way to do any of the above? Especially looking for a way to keep email notification silent but have SMS vibrate.

I recently upgraded to JH7, and realized that I can no longer use my own specific audio files as ringtones anymore...its only letting me use the stock ringtones. When I go to Settings > Sound and Display > Voice call ringtone , the only ringtones I can choose from are the ones that came with the phone. It's the only thing that pops up. Theres nothing for me to click anymore that lets me search my android system for audio files.

I've written an app that has to communicate with a webserver. The server won't allow my app to communicate with it without a certificate. Therefore, the web developer has provided me with a custom Bouncy Castle Keystore file (custom.bks) and I'm want to load this bks file onto my device, thus allowing my app to communicate with that webserver. I've tried saving the .bks file to the sd card, then installing from there but no progress...

When custom roms come out for the Captivate will this be able to make it where it is bloatfree from AT&T and have custom things being able to add any apk app without doing the sideloading stuff ect? I am wondering if custom ROMs will make it where we can do whatever we want without AT&T restrictions.

I did a search in the captivate forums and couldn't find this one. I'm trying to set the tone for text notifications. If I go to Settings>Sound>Notification Ringtone it only gives me the pre-loaded sounds. If i go to the sound file in my phone and click "set as" it only gives me options for voice call ringtone, caller ringtone, and alarm tone.

I decided to try Kies again. I set it up and hard set my USB connection on the phone to Samsung Kies. I plugged in my phone and didn't even get the notification from Windows that a USB device was plugged in.I unplugged the phone and plugged it back in, this time watching the phone. A very quick message popped up on the phone that said"PC connection available only in idle screen.Close running applications."I checked TasKiller and there wasn't anything running.I scratched my head for a minute and then on a hunch used Home Switcher to change my default and running home screen to TouchWiz. I plugged/unplugged my phone and it worked! It said "MTP application", gave the USB symbol and connected.I then switched my home screen/Launcher to LauncherPro and tried it. It failed like ADW did with the same error! I'm not sure what gives there, but it's something you may want to investigate if you're having trouble using an MTP application like Samsung Kies.

Totally new to "smart phones" and feeling pretty dumb right now I have managed to download a bunch of sounds (mpga) and saved them in my "sounds" folder on my Captivate. And following advice, have gone into my Contacts, scrolled down, and assigned a file as ringtone, then hit "Save". When viewing the contact, it shows the file as being assigned as their ringtone. And then when the call comes in.... Rings as default. Whats going on? Do the sounds have to be in the Ringtone folder? If yes, how do I do that? If no, what am I doing wrong?

Sorry if this has already been covered somewhere else but I've searched the website for quite some time and I can't seem to find the answer. I picked up the Captivate the other day and so far I love it but is there a way to assign custom non-Samsung message tones? I mean for texts and emails, calender alerts. When I open the apps and go to settings then change alert tone only the Samsung preloaded ones show up. I can choose any ringtone for calling, just not messaging. I downloaded several apps such as SMS Pop-Up and Chomp SMS to see if that would give me the option to choose any tone but no such luck. My last 2 phones have been a Blackberry Bold 9000 and a Backflip and both those phones had those capabilities. Anyone have any ideas?

I am very new to custome ROMs. I have tried several so far and found that they do not have the "Active Sync" email type. I use my phone for work and have to have "Active Sync" for our corporate email. I have to have full outlook functionality for work. What I need to add to get that back. It was on Gingerbread, but I want a current ROM. I have a Samsung Captivate.

I have a rooted Evo with stock Rom and I was wondering if it is worth all the trouble to flash a custom rom. The only rom I have heard of really is Fresh. And then there are custom kernels too. Is there a rom/kernel that is really better than stock that I should upgrade too? And what is the best way of backing up all my apps.
